How do you test if MAF is ok?

sorry, i don't have the exact figures you need, but in general, they are tested with a ohmmeter. the resistance must fall within a certain range. the figures may be published in a good repair manual.

the sensor may also measure intake air temp, so you will need to identify the specific prongs to test as well.

hopefully someone has the figures

I would test for continuity with an ohmeter at the plug. If it's like a 4th gen there are 2 wires. You should get continuity in two places. That would tell you if its got broken wires or not. As far as knowing the proper resistances it's like Rook said ... you need a good manual.

alrighty thanks guys. I am getting a P0171 CEL light, and I've cleaned it out and replaced the fuel filter, so I think it might be the MAF, but I want to be positive before I spend any money for a replacement. IE 400+ dollars.

Inspection of the MAF....

Hi Techno;

looking at those instructions for checking a MAF sensor has me somewhat confused since they are showing the MAF completely removed and at the same time saying things like " turn the ignition on", "turn the ignition off".

I can completely remove the MAF , the rest seems to be working by some kind of osmosis or mechanical telepathy?

Thanks

Looks like in the diagram they’re showing that you can check voltage from the outside of the plug. I understand that not all electrical meter test leads are created equally so you might have to jam a piece of wire or metal in there if your test leads are too fat

To turn ignition on and then off you can use the key.

Step 1 is performed with the MAF disconnected/removed. If this test is ok, then Step 2 is performed with everything connected. You need test leads with thin tips to do this.
No magic or biological molecular processes needed.

Exactly what I used. Don't try to penetrate the wire (you will slip and stab your hand). Push the needles in parallel to and beside the wire until they touch the metal contact in the receptacle on the other end. Before you connect the MAF sensor to the plug, test continuity to the metal contact with an alternate meter lead, then swap and test the second needle connection.

After cleaning with MAP/MAF spray, mine reads 1.8-1.9 kohms at 79 degrees (THA and E2). The resistance should drop with increasing temperature. So this should be about correct. This is the bulb on the outside of the sensor. Must be a reference temp.

The internal filaments (VG and E2G) are reading 1.78 to 1.8v (initial start, high idle) to 1.7 (dropped back to low idle).

I reset the ck engine light and will now see if the P0171 reappears.

Thanks for the diagram and the posts guys!
