How important is equal treadwear?

How important is having equal treadwear on all four tires?

I've got a 2008 V8 4x4 (AWD) with the stock Cross Terrains at 9/32", but one of the tires needs to be replaced due to a screw near the sidewall. The new tire will be at 12/32". Is this going to be a problem? I do not think the spare has been in the rotation, so that's not a solution.

If the replacement is identical, you should be okay with 3/32. You might want to cross rotate a little more frequently than 5k to spread the effect on the diffs, and I'd consider getting the spare in the rotation and keeping the deep treads always on the vehicle.

I agree, any more of a difference might be cause for concern, but that's close enough. I also concur that more frequent rotations will help spread the tire wear and ease the strain on the diff. Every 3k or so until you replace them all again.
 
I had that question a while back. I must have called 6-7 dealers speaking to service techs and service writers asking the question. Everyone repsonded "huh?" Had no idea what I talking about or said it shouldn't be a big deal. I wanted a solid answer.

Finally I got a service writer who immediately, without hesitation told me if you are replacing a tire and the tire on the other end of the same axle has less than 5/32"(If my memory serves me correctly), gotta do both.

I think you'll be okay, even if he was wrong.

If I understand your post correctly, the spare has not been in use. If so, then put the spare on the same axle as the new replacement (either front or rear). This will result in two like size tires on the same axle, which shouldn't have any negative impact on the differential for that axle. I would maintain a 4 wheel rotation (cross front to rears, and rears to front) to keep the two newer tires on the same axle until you replace the other tires.
