How Long Do Differentials last?

There's probably not a good answer for this except to say it may not last as long as others that have had proper maintenance. Gear oil should be changed every 30k miles if not towing, every 15k miles if towing. True for both front (if 4-wheel drive model) and rear differentials. Another big variable, of course, is driving style.

I recently bought my 2008 V8 with 42k on it, and i immediately brought it to the dealership i trust. They put it up on the lift and took samples of the diff. oils and they were contaminated. I had them changed and the original dealership footed the bill. Not to mention it also needed a new battery and the tint on the front windows was illegal.
Not to hyjack the thread, but while on the topic of correct interval of the changing of fluids, with the "sealed" transmissions (i believe those are 2005 -2009) when SHOULD those be changed? Dealership says "no need til 100k", but opinions vary.

Toyota diffs are pretty good. Although there have been a few folks around here who have had axle shaft bearings fail. There are a lot of different things that come into play when guessing how long a part will last on a vehicle. For a typical 4runner user doing minimal maintenance I would say the diffs will outlast the vehicle.
