How long do you plan on keeping your T4R?

Forgive me for being blunt but it's a mass produced UTILITY vehicle!! It's not an Italian exotic sports car or German luxury saloon. I don't know the exact statistics but I would bet that it's among the better selling SUV's on the market. These trucks are made to be driven and worked.
Drive your 4Runner and enjoy it for as long as you can afford to drive it.

Yea but if I don't have to spend the extra time and effort to make a new 4runner the way I want, that would be nice... especially because I know I'm not going to see any return on the mods when I go to sell it.
It's not about the exotic price or extravagance... it's about the man hours spent making it the way I want and then not having it do the things I want because I drive it on pavement to work everyday. That's the only reason I'm contemplating this.

Agreed! Cut and bailed 400+ square bales of hay with the tractor and picked them all up in the runner this weekend. It is used and loved and will be with me until it dies!

^^^^I agree....AND there's a chance 10 years from now you won't be able to buy a BOF SUV.
I plan to get mine just the way I want it, then retire it to utility/ towing use and buy a fun commuter, like a Cooper S, Civic Si, etc. That is, unless I give-in to the Land Cruiser bug :hungry:

I just went through this, and still question my decision. I got a 2012 Golf TDI 6MT to complement my old 07 SE (now wrecked and replaced, see sig). At the time of death my old 4R was fairly mint with only 57k mi on it.
I got the TDI to commute and save a bit of fuel money and wear and tear on my 4R. Some basic math led me to figure that I am now paying double for the TDI in fuel, insurance, and car payments than what my monthly gas bill was with my paid off 4R ($600/mo vice $300/mo). I got a promotion and pay raise so I am not noticing it but it does not make a lot of sense to me. And since I keep my 4R for weekends and trips I am spending the same amount of fuel for it too!
And let me tell you this, I thought it would be fun to have more cars to work on. Wrong! What a PITA! Different fuel, different oil, different tools! Plus I feel like I somewhat neglect my 4R with work the way it has been lately. I am seriously considering selling to CARMAX or some other type place to get rid of it. The problem is it is just too fun to drive, not to mention I can get 45 mpg driving like crazy.
So I dont know if that will help you or not but thats what I have experienced.

I planned on keeping it until the wheels fell off, or a diesel version came out. Then I drove the beast of a 5.7 Tundra I eventually bought. I have had a lot of vehicles, Logan saw all the vanity plates hanging in my garage from them. The 4Runner ranks at the top. I had more fun in that vehicle than even my 400hp Subaru. If my wife hadn't switched offices from 10 miles away to 60 she would be driving it now and her Matrix would be gone.

I'll keep mine until I see what the 6th Gen looks like (if there is one). If its unibody, I'll trade my SR5 for a TE in the last year of the 5th Gen. I may just get greedy and order a Shoreline Blue TE with KDSS in a couple years anyway.
I've also made the mistake of buying a commuter car to save wear and tear on a nice truck before. Years ago, I bought a 2002 Nissan Sentra SE-R to commute with, and saved my old 2004 Silverado Z-71 for the weekends. When I did the math, it was not worth the extra payment and insurance. Plus, the SE-R only got 26 MPG on the highway (hard to drive one of those little rockets lightly). I ended up getting lucky and convincing my employer to give me a take home vehicle, so the SE-R got sold. Its probably been turned into a ricer and wrecked by now. I would not do it again, especially given the reliability and gas mileage of the 4Runner.

Alright... I think you guys are right. I'll probably end up taking a happy medium in the future, but that'll probably be at the 80-100k point.
Then maybe I'll treat myself to a new Lexus or BMW and reward myself for being patient

I'll chime in while I'm at it....I had a 2005 Carolla I bought new and put 62k miles in 2 years on it when I had it and all I did was change the oil and rotate the tires. Sold it when I was restationed in NYC and didn't need a car. Have the 4R now and put 10k in 6 months mostly because it's a great road trip car and we find all kinds of fun things in WA (plus it holds my two German Shorthairs in crates, 4 people and gear for hunting/camping with no issues). Only trying to keep the mileage back now so that I don't run down the stocks and incur the cost of replacement before my wedding next July which I'm partially paying for (which after that, the modding SHALL begin
). It's the 7th Toyota my parents or I have owned and my parents have run them all to about 225k in about 8 years (50 mi one way commutes) before trading to a new one (and my dad was less than timely on oil changes and maintenance). I'll try not to run it that hard but my goal is to keep it to at least 300k properly maintained.I look at it as it's an awesome SUV, we all bought it because it's a blast to drive, highly capable, and very reliable, might as well drive it and enjoy the hell out of it rather than leaving it sitting in a driveway looking pretty and being underutilized. That would be such a waste of a great truck. :trophy:
