How Loud does your 03-04 new engine sound with all windows up w/out music on?

Hi all,

I'm a first time 4Runner's Owner, mine is SR5 04 4WD and about 300 miles. It makes some harmonic humming sound (It is not a loudsy noise, but it is noticable). I wonder whether it is normal for the 4th generation 4Runner or not. couple days ago It started making harmonic sound (since mine was parked in the garrage, I could hear the sound). I took it to the dealer. They said the drive belt was seated improperly, so they take it out and reinstalled it back...It seems like the noise is weaken but still I can hear it. Even I am inside the SUV, all of my windows are up, and no music is playing. I still can hear some humming noise...I thought with the new Engine it is supposed to be quiet as I feel when I first had it for the first week(or maybe I didn't pay attention to the sound). Right now, If It is normal to have humming sound I feel relief. However, I would feel bad if it is not supposed to be that way. Help me with this Poll.

It should be fairly quiet. I don't hear any harmonic humming. Just the buttery smooth purr of my v8.

I hear some wind noise/humming but nothing major. The rest is the soothing sound of the power of my V8!

When you say "harmonic sound" is it a ticking or clicking sound? Really notciable when next to a wall or closed area? Does it come from one side noticably?

If yes to any of these questions, you may want to do a search on "valve/lifter noise" for the 4th gen V6.

It is a ticking and humming sound as well. Yes, I could hear it clearly inside my garrage. From the driver's front side, I could hear the ticking sound, and from the front end, I could hear the humming sound. I will search on that subject.

The new V6 isn't the quietest engine. I can hear the engine fairly well with the windows closed and the radio off. It's not excessive, but is enough to let me know the engine is running.

That is what I thought how the SUV/Truck engine sounds like...besides, it is not a luxury SUV which I am expecting to be perfectly quiet... like Lexus.:driving:

NO catagory for pleasant purr.

Comapred to my Tahoe which roars when you push the gas, this is surprisingly quiet. Evne stepping on the gas to pass or run up a hill is veyr plush and soft purr. You know ther is a small V8 there, but all working doing it's job....YES< it's a SMALL V8....anyting under 5.0 is a small V8.

I've had (5) Toyota trucks and they have all made the same sound. Tick tick tick tick tick... Some louder than others. I just assume they are supposed to?

Very quiet until I PUNCH IT and then comes the cool V8 varoooom.

My 04 V-6 has a nice quiet gurgle through out the RPM range. If I punch it , it remindes me of any other aluminum engine, sounds kind of "tin" ey. Over all the only drone I notice is up a hill at around 2K with a load on it. Other than that its pretty quiet for a truck. My wifes 05 Liberty Limited is louder than the 4 runner!
