Thought I'd start a thread to keep track of broken axles. (4th gen 4Runner, FJ Cruiser, 2nd gen Tacoma)
Please send me a PM if your count needs to be updated in the list. Lots of axles are broken when it comes to IFS but which replacement axle is best seems to be anecdotal more than substantive so If you've broken an axle (or several) post up and we'll compile the info into something useful.
Post up with:
- Where the break happened? i.e. inner axle at the stub, inner joint, outer joint.
- What brand axle? Not all brands are equal. Look at the box since auto parts stores switch up the replacement brands often.
- What was happening at the time of breakage?Wheel spin then grabbed with wheels straight forward or maybe steering turned all the way to steering stop and lots of droop on a wheel.
- Just a boot tear, steel was fine. How much lift are you running?
Ric - outer joint cage exploded, Toyota, had the steering cranked hard to driver's side while crawling up a 18" rock, the passenger side had the greater angle with the droop and was the side that broke.
