How many miles would you say is too much?

When buying an engine for a swap? I'm starting to get my stuff together to swap my 22re. Leaning towards the 5vz for simplicity/aftermarket support factor but still open to other engines if i find one with low miles and good price.

I recently found a good deal on a 5vz with 152k. What are your thoughts on mileage when purchasing a used engine? sub 100k would be ideal but they are very hard to come by. I'd rather get a donor car than an imported engine with a cut harness or no harness or trans etc.

Low mileage 5vz's are hard to find now, so you may have to take what you can get. If you can hear it run and do a compression test so much the better.

That's a big plus.
Do a compression test and a leak down test, and if all looks good go for it.
And strip everything you can from the donor.

I second that, it's always better to have a donor vehicle!

I recommend TDI swap it's a little more costly but you get a stable engine and a big tech support following. Check out my TDI build thread I will be doing updates for the next two weeks on install and hopefully running it to test fuel economy. May be worth your time to look into it otherwise the 3.4L is a solid 250k plus engine.

Are you on a tight budget? Maybe the money you save from this good deal you found can rebuild the motor before dropping it in the truck, then you'll have nothing to worry about for quite a while

Not so much, just don't want to be smart about it and not pay more than i need to. I was thinking the same, with the whole truck in my possession i can part it out and make some money back to use towards the swap.

That'd be my choice too. I've come across such deals on local CL's a few times. They go for $900-1500, depending on the vehicles' condition and option.

People do buy-back from the insurance company all the time I guess...
