i had a 88 tbird that had an inaccurate fuel gauge when i bought it. i ran out of gas quite often and i kept a full 1-gallon gas can in my trunk.
it wasnt long until the fuel pump died. ironically enough, it died right after i filled with gas, so i couldnt leave the gas station.
since i had no money, i had to siphon a lot of gas out before i eventually just decided to get a hydraulic jack with a piece of plywood on it under the tank and lower it that way. but the bolts that held the tank on were rusted out and i had to saw them off. since i sawed them, i needed a new "clip" thing for the bolts to screw into when i put it together. since they were not made anymore, and i was unlikely going to find a decent pair at a junkyard, i had to have some made for me. let me tell you... a bitch and a half with a side of mashed potatoes.
the whole thing cost me two weeks, a bit over $100 (after getting the new pump at cost), many nights by the heat vents in the house, and over a month with a sore back.
worth it? nah. especially cuz only a few months later the thing caught on fire... only cuz when i replaced the valve cover gaskets and had to remove the fuel injection, i never bothered replacing the fuel injection gasket... stupid.
point being, if you can afford it, dont run the gas too low. a few extra stops at the station are worth much more than what will happen if you run out of gas all the time.
