I use mine pretty regularly it seems. I usually engage it though before I am stuck, but most of the time I am about to do something stupid that may end up getting me stuck lol

I have an 02 Limited with a Detroit TruTrac LSD in the back and I've never been close to stuck - yet (I guess the winch is really just for looks). It engages seamlessly and works great in snow. I usually run forest roads, with loose rock and some rock steps (12"-18" about the largest), and a little mud (but around here there isn't enough soil to make mud deep enough to get stuck) and I usually just stay in 2WD unless I need 4LO. I feel the LSD engage often, especially in loose rock. Whether you need a locker depends on what kind of wheeling you do. For what I do a manual tranny would be a REAL pain in the butt - I want to enjoy the ride, not have to concentrate on shifting gears all the time.

It's easier to retrofit a locker than it is to replace a crappy interior or undo 100k+ miles of poor maintenance. You made the right choice. You have a clean, paid for, well maintained 4runner. Add more toys later.

Couldn't agree more. I bought my 97' Limited auto, no e-locker and ended up getting an awesome deal on a well taken care of vehicle with only 86K on it.

I literally today, just finished swapping in a 5 speed transmission. There are no limits to what you can do with a little time/money/skill.

I have a 1996 4Runner with no lockers that are switched. I say that because I've read several places that my center diff is locked with a 70-30 split rear-front all of the time.

Anyway, I have gotten my truck stuck mudding twice. Both times were my fault, I don't know anything about driving in mud.

The first time I got high centered in other peoples ruts, nothing a locker would help with.

The second time I got stuck with a front and rear tire in a ditch while trying to pull out the other truck. Wish I had a locker then. I would have been able to get out with a locker on either front or rear. As it was I had to wait for about 4 hours for someone to tow both trucks out.

Without a locker you can go on nearly every blue square trail and a lot of black trails.

In fact if you don't have sliders you should worry about that first.

Nearly any trail where you NEED a locker, you will also really really want sliders to protect your body.

In summary: those of us with lockers rarely use them and you can always add one after the fact.

I get where I need to go usually in 2wd, with 4wd pulling me out of any situation i get myself into.

I also might have pulled a fullsize chevy once in a round of tug o war. :eyebrows: no one talked s--t about the "mr. wishi washi 4x4" after that...

Only have gotten stuck twice in my 96 auto. First time was before fixing the 4wd :ybrick: going up a snowy hill and the rear slid out and got caught up on a rock and the second I slid off a rock in a puddle and the hitch got stuck preventing me from backing out. Both were my fault but I doubt a locker would have been much help in either situation

Manual auto, no lockers. Never been stuck, but I have had to choose different lines than the other guys that where locked. I have on board air already, but I still can't justify the price of ARB's if I'm rarely going to use them, but that said I still want them.

Swap wasn't too bad at all, actually it was surprisingly easy. Everything is tight and looks like it is factory.

A LSD lets both wheels spin at the same speed in a straight line under little stress. An Aussie locker can sometimes click around turns under light power but when under power, both wheels are locked together so that one wheel cannot spin independent of the other.

You can still have fun without a locker but like others have said there have been times I really wish I had one.

I always find myself taking a little easier line, or having to stop and start over on a different line a few times before getting up a hill that someone with a locker just walks up.

I have joked with my locked buddys saying they are cheaters and I have more fun but than other times I look like an idiot trying to get up something that has been torn up or is wet.

But again its all fun with or without a locker.

Yeah I was the one who snagged the black 4Runner, a couple guys on here said they saw it on there.
