Well, on cars.com dealer inventory, set to any distance, 2012 4runners:
Total: 6217
Trail: 160
Limited: 1501
SR5: 3395
Base or unknown: 1161
It also seems to depend a LOT on where you are. For example, I hear that Colorado is full of Trail Editions, but within 500 miles of Atlanta, there are less than 2 dozen.

Got ours from San Antonio TX. The dealer told us the same..

Since I first became interested in the 4R TE back in February of this year, I have yet to see a Trail Edition on the road in Michigan. Not one.
Disregard the notion that low supply should have an adverse affect on your ability to negotiate a great deal. If you are patient, it is still entirely possible to get a large discount on a TE. I paid invoice for mine; but I had to order it and wait seven weeks for it to arrive because there was not one TE available in my entire State at the time I placed my order.
Do your research. Be patient! With all the technology available to help us conduct our research these days (i.e., like the internet and product forums such as this forum); and coupled with this sluggish market and resultant low interest rates, there has NEVER been a better time for consumers to buy a vehicle.
The key is to be patient. Being in a hurry always tips the negotiation process to the seller's advantage. It creates a false sense of urgent demand.

I agree with 36bound, I searched for 6 months and I did a nationwide search for the exact LE I wanted, I was going to pull the trigger on one in Seattle (I live in Las Vegas) until a dealership in Flagstaff e-mailed me the day before I was going to buy my plane ticket and offered me a deal.
The price was not as good as the deal in Seattle, so I asked the dealership in AZ to match the price and I'd be down the next day. I had already secured financing so I was good to go, they said no at first and I said OK have a nice day, they called me back 2 hours later and said they would do the deal and throw in some Toyota rubber floor mats and rear cargo mat.
Moral of this story is do your homework, search around and don't settle for anything less than what you want.
It is a buyers market right now, if you can secure your own financing you can almost get your new car for invoice if not lower, I understand your TE is hard to find but it's not impossible. Good luck with your search and if your find one in Las Vegas you can stay at my place.

I know exactly how you feel. Before I got my TE there were only a handful in the Southeast Region and most of them weren't KDSS equipped. I ordered mine, and it essentially came off the boat and into my hands. Dealer was a hassle to work with too.
I live in Mississippi and finding a TE was tiresome, but not impossible. They tried to jack up the price on me in Slidell, LA. I laughed at the dealer and kept looking. About two weeks later I found a dealer in Alabama that was willing to work with me and got a great deal. Rare, NO! Hard to find, maybe. Seen one on the way to Texas. The idiot turned it into a low rider.
