How much gas can you fit in your 4runner..and how far can you go?

While we're on the subject, I don't hear a lot about people fouling (correct adjective?) their charcoal canisters very often... is the concern there realistic? I understand the logic of how it happens, but I am not really familiar with the part - what does it do with the gas fumes that are normally collecting in there? Does it just drain back into the tank?

Anyone have a picture or diagram of the part in relation to the fuel tank?

i'd love to know the answer to that as well.

ok i lied, exxon doesn't record the gas prices on the statements but here's a recent example and since this is my only car and if you think about the price of gas as around $3.25 or so here in Nashville back in Sept..you can see some pretty large fill up numbers (over $60) and do the math.

I'll look around for some actual reciepts.

It happens but alot of other times the damage can be done to a variety of parts in the fuel system which can result in emissions issues or/and low MPGs and sometimes a saturated canister is overlooked. It happens but usually over a period of time so it is a ticking time bomb if continually overfilled but usually not a disaster.
I have no need to sit at the pump and squeeze in every last drop since there's no benefit in it for me so any possible damage isn't worth it to me and it is a big deal if you keep your truck for a while like I have done with mine. .

y'all have made your point. its stupid for me to keep doing this..i am OCD so i think i enjoyed always seeing the tripometer roll over 300 miles but like ron pointed out..what's the point? you save an extra day filling up?

200~ miles my gas light is already on..
im not the type to run it dry anyway, once the light comes on means fill it up..
dont really pay attention to my MPG anymore because all i do is get mad and then look at my truck and explain to myself its worth it

Running through my first tank, hit 250 and the light just came on, I'll be around 275 before I can fill up.

The best I've done with the fuel light on is 56 miles. The engine started sputtering going down hill but ran normal on the flat and up hill so I believe the fuel level was extremely close to the end up the pump pick-up. I put in 16.xx gallons to the first click.

The big differences in mileages being reported here makes me wonder if there is a large tolerance on the depth of the fuel pump in the tank. Do some pumps sit lower than others?

When gas light comes on I can usually go about 30 to 40 more miles. I always have a little over 2 gallons according to my UG. But everytime I fill up I can easily get 18 gallons in before I get the first click. My fuel gauge and tank seem to be pretty accurate I don't get that 2 gallons of inaccessible gas some guys talk about.

I've thought about this thread a few times while filling up recently, so I've purposely tried to get more gas in after the nozzle shuts off automatically. So far the most I've gotten is 0.6 gallons. There's absolutely no way I could get 1 or more gallons in after the first click.

Just an FYI..336 miles on last tank. Pump cut off at 15.4 and I ended up putting 19.08 gallons in.

It's all about going slow.. I bet the pump clicks oft about 7-10 times for me.

If I put fuel in when the fuel level warning light comes on, it only takes 12.8-13 gallons. I used to let the nozzle at the fuel station click twice before I stopped adding fuel (which almost always allowed another 1/2 gallon into the tank), but I stopped doing that when I realized how hard it is on the evaporative emission system. I also stopped running it more than 35-40 with the fuel light on because the fuel in the tank helps cool the fuel pump. I've noticed my Walbro 255lph pump gets louder as the fuel level goes down, so no sense putting extra strain on the pump.

All that said, I usually get 225 miles on ~13 gallons of city driving (17 mpg) and 275 miles on 13.5 gallons of highway driving (19-20 MPG). I can push it a little over 300 miles if I'm driving conservatively and willing to dip a lower in the tank, but for the above reasons I try not to do that much.

I just got to the gas station as the light came on 5miles prior to getting to the gas station... and I filled up 15 gallons and that was trying to get as much as possiable into it... I know not a good thing to do... but any ways It filled up 15 gal before my light came on... that being said idk what's going on with my mpg! No check engine light, and nothing done to the motor I have 33" tires and a 3" body lift aside from that stock but no way should I be getting 11mpg... if my math was right. Spark plugs were just changed out and oil just changed... idk how people are getting 300 something miles a tank! Granted our tanks hold 18.5 from toyotas spec and I was 3.5 gallons short of empty.. and I have heard people say they get another 50-60miles after the light comes on... but have not tested this theory yet! Haha but any advice from you long term runner gurus! New to them so not sure what to check I did just replace the valve cover gaskets and all others with doing so. So maybe that leak of air/oil could have been a culperate as I have not driven since doing so other then to the gas station.. as stated

How did you calculate the distance you had travelled? Did you allow for the effect of larger tires?

I did not I just did a simple 165 miles when I got the the gas station Divided by 15 gal put in.

Guys I'm telling you I put 20 gallons in every time. I drive until needle is just under bottom tic mark.. around 330 miles unless I hit the interstate and do 78mph for any extended time.

I have 323k miles on my 4runner and have never had a problem from overfilling. I'm still waiting to see what filling it up to the top do to my vehicle. This is a 98 sr5 stick.

That's what I do too. Its only for trips that I fill up. And since it was filled up last, I try to fill up one more time so I can get a decent idea of my fuel mileage.

Your tires are bigger than stock, so one revolution of the axle is now taking you further than the odo thinks. 33's are about 8% bigger in circumference than stock tires, so increase your miles traveled by 8%. That will boost your mpgs a little.
But remember, 33's are also heavier and eat up your engine torque to get them moving which means more fuel consumed.
