How much oil used between changes?

Hi all, I have a 99 Limited with 220,000 kms (137,500 mi), I'm not complaining, but I only loose a few tablespoons between changes?
I want to switch to synthetic but I'm afraid it'll clean out the seals & start to drip all over the place.
I had a Rav4 that was great at 375,000 kms, thought I would give it some love & care so I switched to synthetic & it leaked like a sieve for the last 25000 kms. I had to add about 2 or 3 litres between changes.
I did make it to 400,000 kms though. That was bullett-proof...

You should not use more than 1/4qt between changes on a healthy motor. Switching to synthetic is good to do and as long as you dont have any oil leaks it will not cause any. If you have leaks then yes it may leak a little more due to the smaller molecules of synthetic.

I switched from synthetic blend to full syn at about 75k several years ago after the prices for full syn had dropped significantly. My engine used almost nothing before the switch at a 5k OCI and now uses maybe 1/5 of the way between top line and bottom line at 165k and 7k OCI on full syn. I have never come close to adding oil between changes on this truck in the 15 years I have owned it.

I'd risk it.

I bought our 96 SR5 with 255,000 miles. I put synthetic in right away and within 1 OCI I had Valve cover leaks. Retighten'd the VC bolts and two oil changes layed the front crank seal went from drip to gusher.

So I put a new timing belt kit in and replaced the crank seal. After fixing leaks that already existed and got worse with synthetic I had zero oil usage in 3000 mile OCI.

If you got leaks fix them. That 3.4L is a great engine. Unfortunately someone ran a light and totaled it.

I buy 4Runners and sell them sort of as a hobby and to make a few extra dollars. I have owned 20+ of the 3rd generations. Of the ones I kept long enough to require an oil change, none have ever used any oil. I've had some that were not taken care of too. This is a great engine. One of the best, if not the very best Toyota has ever built. I ALWAYS switch them over to full synthetic Mobil1. Never any problems. Make the switch.

your truck is still new. you should not have any problems changing to synthetic with only 137K miles.

you will like it. it will last longer in between changes thus using less oil. i change mine about every year or 8-10K miles

I don't think mine burns a teaspoon between 5000 to up to 8000 mile changes.

Makes it hard to remember to check the oil actually because it is never low, it stays at exactly the same spot on the dipstick for a year so I forget to even check for months sometimes which is a bad habit I need to break.

I should probably get into the habit of checking my oil every time I fill up on gas.

Personally I just went to synthetic at 180k and got a leak. I had no leaks prior so the cleaners in the synthetics cleaned up the seals I suppose and leaks became present. AGAIN, I'm not stating that synthetic causes leaks. I had this problem in another thread and some people didn't understand that.

260k miles and I run Mobil 1 gold cap stuff at 10,000 mile intervals. I don't think mine uses any oil at all.

300k on mine, I use approximately 1 quart every 12k miles. Mobile 1 full synthetic for the last 120k miles.

Mine at 199K doesn't use any im between changes. My wife's with 308K uses about 1 Qt between changes, but the rear main seal is leaking. I'd like to fix it, but really don't want to put that much into something she may only have a bit longer.

Yep same here, I have 206k on mine and it doesnt leak or use any oil between changes. Like Millerad even when i change my oil most of the time it is still nearly see through, i am just kinda weird about it, for now anyway until i send off for a test.

I still and will always use dino oil. Its cheaper and I like to change it a lot. Now in towing, or high performance applications I go synthetic Royal Purple. Nothing better.

Thanks everyone, you have convinced me. Next change I'm going from 5000 km intervals on Castrol GTX to Castrol Syntec Edge (not sure what it's called in the US?) to 7000 or 8000 km intervals. I may even get a few extra thousand kilometers out of this engine when it's all said and done? Here in Canada, a vehicle can get antique status after 20 years I think? I hope to get at least 15 more years out of this beauty... I've always been a believer in the fact that oil & fuel are the most important components of any vehicle. "Use the right stuff & it'll last forever."
