How much should I ask for my 2001 4Runner?

I would rather keep this but a growing family is a little difficult to fit in the back seat. I was thinking about replacing it with a 4th Gen because I know it will handle the seats and I'd love to find one with a V8.

One more question, other than these forums, where's the best place to list this for sale? Craigslist is okay but unless you use some form of search aggregator or change locations, you're stuck in your own location. It's a bit tedious. Is cars.com a good choice or perhaps autotrader?

Tell me whats better then a 3rd gen 4runner? I know the 4th and 5th gens have problems so upgrading to a newer one is not good, also what other 4wd truck will last as long as these, none. just keep it and drive it for 500k , the last 1999 and 2002 are the best, just throw a e locker on it will only take 10 min

Could you elaborate on the types of issues you're aware of with the 4th gen 4Runners? I'm thinking pretty seriously about replacing the 3rd gen with a 4th gen.

I haven't heard of any serious problems with 4th gen. Owned a V6 and it was flawless. Family member has one and no issues at all. I plan to replace my 3rd gen with a 4th gen or GX470.

BlackBook says $7350 for clean trade for a 2002 like yours, 4x4. Average trade is $6250. Retail between $8200 and 9700.

The v6 has head gasket problems on certain years. See the 4th gen section here & get a v8.

Craigslist is free. The rest are paid, you won't see very many older vehicles on there unless they are collector items.

Does your local area have a used car fair or something to that regards? Here in my area a local junior college does a used auto fair every weekend where anyone can drop off a vehicle (must not be salvage title though) and they will watch it and secure it over the weekend. If anyone wants to buy, they stop by the booth and get your number. Costs $50 but they guarantee it will sell in 3 weekends, or you can keep it there for free until it does.

My 2WD 4Runner sold in 2 days.

some years the head gaskets went and the head lights are plastic, the inside is smaller then the 3rd gen, dont get me wrong I am still looking to buy a 4th gen if I dont have a 3rd gen I would try a 4th.

I've been reading as much as I can on the forum to try to get some idea about the T4R. Your post about the 4th and 5th Gens having more problems makes we think I should look for a 3rd Gen. I like the idea of a "used" price, but I was worried that a vehicle that old might be problematic.

I'm also wondering if ANY generation is really overkill for what we need. I love the look of the 3rd Gen, but is it too much vehicle for towing a 900-lb PeeWee camper (a teardrop that is not set up for off-roading)?

3rd, 4th and 5th generation are all reliable vehicle. I'd even venture to say that 4th and 5th gens are a tad more reliable, as toyota fixed some mistakes they made with older vehicles. To cite a few examples, newer trucks don't have the frequent rear axle seal problems, got a timing chain, no valve clearance to be checked, the lower ball joint is (afaik) of a different more secure design. But for myself, I do prefer the 3rd gen for it's look, simplicity, and obviously lower cost.

Edit: though, the head gasket problem on the 4th gen mentioned above is far heavier than the little quirks we do have on the 3rd gen, but there have also been some instances of 3rd gen head failing, but I think the cause was more often of a cracked head than a head gasket problem.

It really seems dependent on where you live. When I bought mine, it was just barely over KBB - but that was in Illinois. In Utah, where I live, they're consistently $2000 - $3000 over blue book.

Those are the ones made in 03 to 05. Also 2006 and up 4th gens are pretty expensive!
V8 got 2uzfe (Cruiser engine) but this has an interference motor meaning if timing belt breaks, it will damage the valves.
