Since V8's are always in 4Hi, I would never really need to do anything with controls for driving in mild snow huh?

It seems like the Diff Lock button is useless to me because I am not a hardcore offroader.

The diff lock button can be helpful in snow conditions if you find yourself in a situation where you need equal power to both the front and rear axles. Once the power is split front and rear, the ATRAC handles the side to side power distribution. Essentially, with the center diff locked and ATRAC functioning, you will have power sent to the wheel (or wheels) with grip. Sorry to steal the old Subaru line, but it applies to the 4Runner too.

Hey Steve, kidding no. T4R float, yes they kind of do. I have done this a bunch of times using various 4Xs that I have owned, a couple of Nissans, a Chevy and now my T4R.

Albeit, they all have varying 4X systems

If you have ever been pushed sideways in a running stream that is say 18'' deep or more, you would see what I mean, I hunt on a property that is up in Sonoma county CA, near Lake Sonoma and I frequently cross a river on that property, sometimes its just too dangerous and I wont do it, but most of the year I will. Late in summer its barely a trickle but right now, I probably wouldnt cross it, too deep and fast.

So yes I 'swim' my T4R kind-of

Really float and swim it, hell no. It cost to much to try.

It allows you to drive your vehicle along trails where the vehicle would be tipped up high to the left or right and not set off the RSCA system.

I am guessing that Toyota found in testing they could tip the vehicle high enough to deploy the side air curtain airbags - accidentally with out a crash.

The switch allows you the option to turn them off, so they dont deploy by accident

Not sure if it's the same on other models, but in the '04 manual it shows it to the right of your diff lock switch.

If you don't have the side curtain airbags I don't think you would have the button. Also so I would never need to hit that when driving on a road even in the snow?

Josh, it would be a line item on your new veh sticker, under stafety items

On mine, the side curtain airbags are loaded into the top of the A and C pillars (Front windsheild pillar and pillar behind the rear door) at the top, there is a plastic plug about 2 1/2 inches across with 'SRS Side Curtain Airbag' molded into the plastic of the A and C Pillar, near the roof.

It's useless to you unless ur in deep snow or you want to screw around in your car. I lock the diff and rooster tail all 4 tires all the time.

I must admit, I love stoking the fire under the hood, spinning up all 4 is good fun

albeit with some amount of not wanting to break anything too expensive
