How to get more power out of a 22RE?

Lol but there is like nothing else left in that thing. Just the engine.

You dont need anything else just the hp. From what i have read you can put the 350 in without cutting the firewall. That is why most people run a 3" body lift. If you dont want to go with a 350 you can always do the 4.3L chevy v6. Thats what my plan is. Just have decided on whether or not i want to use the fuel injection or carb it.

Fuel injection if you plan on wheelin' it hard! Nothing like going up a hill and the engine sputters and dies on you at the most inopportune time!

It also makes it slightly better on mpg's and you never have to worry about cold starts. Just my 2 cents though...

As for not cutting the firewall, it was my lowrider truck, so a lift kit would have been counter-productive!

Yeah, I had a lowrider with a hydraulic bed when I was a kid... :hiding:

I've been in a few vehicles with the 4.3... not exactly in my taste. If I went for a swap I'd probably go with something like the 350 or similar.
I've heard of some people taking the smaller v8's out of some 90s Lexus cars as well. Ever seen anyone do that?

Thats all good to have a lowrider i dont hate. I want to keep to the fuel injection, but i am not good with wiring and i dont want to have to deal with the emmision controls and stupid sensors. Thats the main reason to put a 4 barrel intake on it. I know holley makes a high angle carb for wheelin but i dont know how good it works.

Yes i believe there are people on this forum that have done that swap. Lots of wiring i would imagine. Good thing about starting with the 4.3 is that if you dont like it it's very easy to go to a 350. you can but adjustable engine mounts so you dont have to cut them and redo them twice.

Would it work with the 4Runner's manual trans?

I know that there's guys that put the A340F tail section on the A340E trans to make it work as an auto. I don't think any of the manual 4WD transmissions bolt up, but I know there's aftermarket bellhousings to mate the 1UZ with R series trans...

Really? That's awesome. Are they decent engines? A V8 sounds pretty good right now :jump:

Some people claim they're the best engine Toyota ever built, forged crank, 6 bolt main, all aluminum, etc., not a powerhouse in stock form, but you can't beat the ability to rev to 9k with a v8

Good amount of money for a 1UZ, and it has to be a specific one (not the VVti engine), but you would probably be very happy with the power/torque output of one!

There's also a lot of wiring support for that engine in the supra world, and the trucks/4 runners are very similar to the MKII supra in terms of sensors and transmissions.

Price wise, it would be cheaper to go with an american engine (chevy/ford), there's several companies who do full kits for engine swaps like that, and you can find Vortecs all over the place for little money.

Personally, I would love to go with the 3RZ swap into my truck, the setup is pretty well-documented online, the parts are readily available, the engines are also easy to find, and best of all, its a TOYOTA!

Kevin, don't you have a 3RZ?

The cars that had the 1UZ from the factory are very cheap around here with interior, exterior or transmission problems, I've seen countless 90-94 LS400 and SC400's over the course of the last year around here for well under 1k, some were running and driving but wrecked.

There is also a lot of support growing for putting the 1UZ into Pickups and 4runners, 2 local companies have popped up within the last couple of months that are selling bellhousings for W and R series 4wd transmissions as well as prebuilt harnesses, which solves the 2 main hurdles with the swap, they aren't super cheap or simple like the small block Chevy, but should get much better milage, run smoother and fit better in the engine bay.

Looking up specs for the 1UZ says that it gets 250 HP.... to me that's a power house compared to the 125 HP 3vze.

From what I've seen, with light modifications like intake and exhaust, you'll get about 210-230WHP through a manual transmission, add in a good tune on an aftermarket standalone ECU and you're closer to the 250 mark.

Either way, yes it's a much more lively engine than the 3.slow, the power curve is way better too.

Now the real challenge: getting all of that for my 4Runner while spending hardly any money. :couch2:

If you're thinking swap, hard to go wrong with a 3.4. It's "only" a V6, but it bolts up to your bell housing and motor mounts, and you can buy a conversion harness and still finish the swap under $1000 if you buy the right donor truck. That's 180 very cheap and easy horsepower. A 1UZ swap would be a lot more complicated.

Yep, a 1UZ would be fantastic, but cost to finish the project, including everything you'd need, and have the truck driving on its own power down the road, you're at least 3 grand into it. While a lot will carry over from the donor car, to do it "RIGHT", means to adapt a bunch of stuff in the dash, get exhaust system run properly and still have it efficient so you get full power of out that engine, and have it all tuned and dialed in costs a LOT more than just throwing in a V6. Those can be done dirt cheap, even with a full build on the engine!

I too would love a 1UZ in my truck, but the economical way to make power would be Chevy V6.

And I know you can get a cheap sub-1,000 dollar lexus as a donor car with lots of other issues, but for me, putting an engine that has more than 100,000 miles in my truck without at least going through and doing a mild rebuild to make sure all is well before the swap would be a bad decision. Just that alone will cost you near 4 or 500 bucks more (full gasket kit, water pump, timing belt, whatever else would be done on a 100k service), and that doesn't include any repairs if you find something wrong.

And, if any of you wanna swap a 1UZ into your vehicle and adapt an R-154 trans to it, I've got a friend selling his one-off bellhousing right now!

The 3.4 is able to use the 2nd Gen's motor mounts??
