How-To-Guide (TRD CAI) Installation

Done!!!

Everything fit except didnt use the tree mount zip ties... ohh I forgot ... The 3rd M8 bolt required a spacer on mine to fully bolt down the bottom half of the intake box. I just used a small/slim 14mm bolt.

It does feel improved in over all drivability... And over acceleration but lets see; what the dyno says.

Yep - Gotta get the human element out of the picture :) Lord knows if I dropped cash on a CAI and/or Exhaust, I'd WANT to feel a difference, and that will have a direct impact on my perceptions of the "real" results (good or otherwise)...

Hats off to ya once again for documenting this process :hatsoff: If results are promising, I might see a TRD CAI purchase in my future...

Let do an update ... I couldnt help myself. The 4Runner drove soo much better now than stock. Curiosity kill the cat; shall we say ...

Very nice! Thanks for taking the effort to do this. A few questions though, did you take note of the different environmental conditions during each run? Temp, humidity, fuel type, fans blowing on the vehicle? These can have a significant effect on the results since the runs were done on different days.

That torque curve is very nice. The area under the curve is great too. about 20TQ and 10HP at 4K RPM is impressive.

stock run
TEMP - 77°
Humidity - No didnt take this into account
FUEL - 87octane
FANS - Yes never dyno'ed without fans on car

TRD run
TEMP - 70°
Humidity - No didnt take this into account
FUEL - 87octane

Sweet, that's some great results. I just installed the K&N intake and I have also noticed a great improvement in the drivability and throttle response. The verdict is still out on the gas mileage though.

for me 1 or 2mpg extra ...

next is flowmaster exhaust and urd x pipe...

Wraith,

Have you ever thought or talked about remapping the ECU on it? I've been talking to one of the TRD guys here. He explained to me that if you can adjust the timing on the 4R and optimize it for 91 octane, that you could potentially gain 20-30HP from that alone.

I've been considering taking mine to a Toyota Tuner and see if this is actually possible.

Unfortunately, not possible :(

Nice results so far Wraith!!! :)

TRD guy talking out of his ass ... unless you hve TRD / Toyota's soft ware and theyre actually doing the tuning.

Toyota's computer is soo much more advance than any other japanese import out there. And is pretty much uncrackable. The last tunable Toyota ecu was 1997.

Speaking from experience. I have tuned and messed with Toyota using piggy af ratio computers; to no avail... The stock ecu will always adjust the timing and a/f ratio; back to stock... You could see a gain of 30whp on first dyno run and you slowly lose the gained horsepower from the piggy tuning.

The only things we can do is do bolt ons ... I have yet see an actual piggy ecu work on the newer toyota ecu's. Short of a stand alone ecu ... its not worth it...

Thanks for the update. I figured as much. Something did not sound right with the information he was giving me.

As already covered, tuning the ECU is pretty much impossible. Have you read this though?

Welcome to Land Cruiser Owners On Line

I make gasoline for a living ... I understand that a higher octane will help with performance. But I dont think it would help in gas mileage.

Do you know that toyota oem ecu is soo advance than it can sense higher octane or higher grade gas @ mid tank ??? And make adjustments on the spot...

The higher the octane the less likely you have detonation. For example you'll have less chances of getting detonation when pulling up a trailer up hill on a hot day.

For me ... I drive too much and would rather spend my money on range time and bullets to worth about paying for 91 octane at the pump. I like my mods but if I were to let say supercharged this with a rotorex blower then 91 octane diet here we come. But bolt ons with mild whp gains is all I want.
