How-To-Guide (TRD CAI) Installation

Thanks for the prompt reply.

I haven't check the stock air box but if there isn't one there, I guess you got a point! lol

I like the TRD CAI but I'm a bit annoyed by the whistle, I might try to put some tape and see if that helps reducing it.

the whistle has nothing to do w/ the holes.. its the nature of the K&N style cotton filter. If the OEM filter fits in the TRD box, test the oem paper filter in the TRD and the whistling will stop

That's probably why mine never whistled. I used the OEM paper filter, not the TRD one......

Oh, got it. Well I just cleaned and oiled my TRD filter, maybe next time I'll give it a shot.

I did the DIY install. All parts from Cameltoe came out to around $320 with taxes and shipping, and included the air filter. The air filter was on back order for about 3 weeks, but everything arrived eventually...

Like others, I did not appreciate the fact that only two clamps were used. The fender side of the box would not clamp or close. The thickness of the rubber gasket is exactly the same as the OEM filter, but it is very stiff and impossible to compress. This makes the box unsealed as-is, and you can easily lift the fender side of the box open. Not good if you're cruising through dusty roads!!!

One individual (who must be an engineer or scientist) ordered two clamps from McMaster Carr. It's an elegant and effective solution, and I highly recommend it. However, if you're like me and you don't want to have to deal with yet another thing, try the MacGyver method:

You had extra clamps (don't know why, but I had 6 extra ones). Take two of those, and pry open the little nubs at the bottom, just a tad:

Now clamp OVER the nubs, and with another pair of pliers, bend the whole clamp tighter. You may find it better to bend back (straighter) near the nubs first, clamp high, and bend forward (tighter) on the main arc.

Now you should have something like this:

Guess what?? There's a small open gap under the lip of the lower box that the nubs can now fit into! And your custom-bent clamps will grab the top. Just keep adjusting the nubs and clamp until they grab firmly.

MUCH happier...

Great hack, thank you!

I have been wondering if my problem might have been using the stock filter in the TRD CAI air box... would that cause rattling and vibration? I feel like others have done this and I haven't seen anyone else comment on problems with rattling like I had before uninstalling.

On my 2014, I installed the TRD CAI, used the OEM stock filter and never experienced what you have described.
We’re your clips tight, everything else seemed tight?
When you removed it, in the process, did you find any part that didn’t seem secure?

Thanks man - I thought so, many have mentioned sticking with the stock filter and I haven't seen other folks mention problems.

Everything was tight as can be, nothing was loose or moved. I even uninstalled and re-installed 2x, as did the tech. No dice. I didn't see any evidence of rubbing or contact on the parts, either.

Wrong TRD intake tube...??

Ok , I need some one to confirm something for me please; before I throw good money after bad...

I have a 2019 Pro for what its worth to this question.

I managed to break my stock airbox lid...fell off the work bench and hit the floor just right to break off a corner where one of the clips holds on...
BAM Wholesale wants $287.00 for just that lid. No thanks.

So I ordered ALL of the pieces for the TRD intake for about $235 shipped.

HOWEVER..I ordered tube #PTR03 -35090-AB. Looks like everything fits but...the hole for the MAF sensor is too big by half. Mounting holes dont line up and the sealing O-ring is just hanging in the wind.

It now appears that I SHOULD have ordered tube# PTR03-89100-AA...
Can someone please confirm that this tube actually fits the smaller diameter MAF on the newer 4Runners??

Thanks!!

You should have had enough information in the 15 pages of notes in this thread to answer your own question. Many people have posted part #'s to indicate what they installed.

I am quoting my own post with the part #'s that worked for everyone including myself, twice!

You are welcome!

Embarrassing, but closing the loop on my rattling issue.

I've had my stock intake back on for a few weeks now and 1) I miss the quicker kickdown with the CAI under hard acceleration and 2) I've been bothered by the fact that I seem to be the only person with this problem. I took all the parts out today and uninstalled stock, and reinstalled my TRD CAI.

The problem was: I didn't have the back/fender-facing side of the air box base clipped to the top of the air box. Yup. That's it. When I pulled everything out and looked it over, I thought, "Oh, I don't remember these. Weird."

Before, I just put on the two fasteners and let it ride, so it makes sense that there was a vibration at higher RPMs as the lid of the air box wasn't fully fastened.

I will say, unless you pay attention to it, the notches in the air box and the divots on the lid aren't exactly obvious, and they aren't super easy to put together either... but yeah... no more rattle.

Happy to be back to more induction noise + better performance :)

I have now read all 36 pages of this thread and I am glad you have resolved your issue. I was actually just thinking about this after your last post and was going to post something about it.

I installed my CAI which I purchased as individual components. Even got my plug at Lowe’s using one of the part numbers I found on this forum. Thanks to everyone for all the info, I found it all helpful. I wanted to add that I kept reading to plug (or not to plug) the gap next to one of the grommets of the lower box. As I removed the OEM box, I did notice there was a hole present in the lowest point of the box for drainage. So I left it open. I also used the AFE Pro dry-S filter. No whistle as of yet.
Did I notice a difference??? Nothing as far as performance other than a louder roar at WOT. I did enjoy the process and the learning. So to me, it was money well spent.

I just installed TRD CAI without any issues, ran stock filter for a week or so while my TRD air filter came in the mail.

Anyone else have fit issues or any tips on how to close the air box with the trd filter? I broke one clip trying to shut it and had to put stock filter back in place. Double checked that it’s correct part number etc.

Those two plastic clips on the fender side are a real pain.
What I did was to clip that side first and then lowering the other side of the upper filter box, pivoting on the clips and trying to keep them attached while doing that.

I also added 2 extra metal clip just in case. No issue with the TRD filter.

Thank you, yes that ended up working. Also finally read through all other pages on this thread and big thanks to those that posted about adding the extra clamps

are these all the parts that are needed ? Im debating on purchasing this with the 20% sale going on, at about $188 total

with the 20% sale going on , parts individually are about $188 plus tax without the air filter. Complete package with air filter is about $100 more at $305 or so.

What did you do for the MAF sensor , did you extend it or split the wiring? Is it a worth while upgrade or just keep the stock intake?
