how to keep the fog lights on with high beams

RXvedub,
Thanks for the directions to get into the steering column cover. Did Part 1 of this mod by tapping together wires from pin #2 (GND) and #17 (switch gnd) at connector C12. Wrapped it up so its neat and clean.

Then in the engine bay fuse block. Did it slightly different than RXvedub. Removed the front fog relay. Carefully bent pin #2 sideways and connected a wire to it. Reinserted the relay and completed the connection (green wire) to pin #2 for the 115V outlet relay (mine is unused). Now I have fogs whenever I have ignition. I can run them with the DRL's for added visiblity.

FYI...this is illeagal in most states.

Thanks for the hint so I tried looking it up.
The way the Highway Traffic Act for Ontario puts it is "No motor vehicle shall carry on the front thereof more than four lighted lamps that project a beam having an intensity of over 300 candela."
So that's why the stock wiring for the fogs switch them off when you put the high beams on, any 4 large lights at a time, not 6 (2 lows + 2 fogs or 2 lows + 2 highs.) Nothing illegal here with running the fogs by themselves, which is why I did this.
My question is how much light (candelas) does the 9005 and 9006 put out?
Also, which cop is even going to see it or care about it or clue into it...
I'll run that risk when I run 6 lights.

NO Blue Wire/s in an '05 LE

OK, I decided to give the C12 wiring harness the fogs-work-with-Hi-Beam-and-fog-light-switch-still-works-too-mod
unfortunately on my '05 LE there is no blue wire, much less two.

I jumpered #2 ground to #17 ? green and the fogs come on whenever LB or HB's are on. Fog switch will not turn them off.

I've obviously bypassed something other than the HB ON ground dropper contacts or LB OFF so drop the fog switch ground - whatever it is. I guess it is possible that what I think is pin #17 is really #10 ? Are the two wires that need jumpering catty cornered diagonal from each other, each one pin from the connector edge and on opposite rows of the connector ? If so then #17 on my 4R is white and has a purple stripe on it.

Atlanta_man,
I'm not sure what you've done because I'm not familiar with the changes for '05. On the '04, looking at my picture of the connector earlier in this thread, pin #1 is up at the top of the pic (on the clip side of the connector.) Pin #17 is at the very bottom (on the opposite row.) Pin #2 and #16 both end at the same ground splice so start by checking if there is continuity there. Pin #11 and #17 were the same blue wire so also check if you have continuity there (are they both still the same colour wire even if not blue?.) If both previous conditions show continuity then jumper them and see if the fogs work w/ LB, HB or OFF with the switch (and the headlight switch on as before.)

OK, got the mod made OK now.

Looking at the connector from the pin (not wire harness side) with the release tab up, the pins that need connecting together are second from left on the upper row and rightmost bottom corner.
Confusion comes from 8 pins on one row and 9 on the other and there is no blue wire on the 05 LE (its red with a green stripe)

I like this mod, fogs can be on with low or high beams and fog switch still does on and off functions.

This will work on most any car. Just find the pin that gets ground on low and nothing on high...after you rule out any pins that get voltage at any time.

By grounding that pin, it no longer loses the ground when the high beams come on, therefore, keeping the fogs on :)

Thanks Man. That's exactly what I was looking for!

It has more to do with the fact that many states have provisions in their motor vehicle code that require the fog lights to switch off when the high beams are selected.

In addition if you think about it "fog lights" are supposed to to increase visibility through rain, fog and snow. They do this by producing a short, wide & low beam pattern which reduces light reflected back at the driver. As far as the manufacturer is concerned why would you need this with the high beams?

And for that same reason, when the fogs are enabled, both low and high should go out.

I've always viewed it this way:

FOG lights (for use in fog) should be not be white...they should be amber, wavelength more suitable for fog...and that is when you do NOT want high beams (and sometimes low beams) on at the same time as your fogs.

DRIVING lights are white and are meant to help fill in what the head lights dont light up (close in front of the vehicle and towards the sides of the road)...and with what driving lights do, I dont want them to go off with my high beams...I want the area the driving lights illuminate to STILL be illuminated no matter if my low or high beams are on.

I concur. This wiring mod is cool, but not exactly what I want. I'm going to research using a switch to isolate the fogs (driving lights?) on their own.

Already been done ;) Read through the thread to find the link to having the FOGS work independantly with the stock switch.

Did this mod today the only difference is that I got power from the parking light so the fog light will only go on with the lights and not all the time all worked great thank you

This write up is for fog lights to work with high beams only... not indipendantly.

Thanks for the great research and write up! I printed out your pics and instruction, and went to work....Thanks to your help, the job took a total of about 15 min to do.....
Looks so cool to have the fogs on w/ the high beams. I've been wanting to do this, but was not thrilled about doing the jumper wire bit in the main fuse box, because I want to maintain a functioning switch.....
Thanks again, you rock!

I did both mods the hi beam and the jumper and now the fogs stay on with the hi beams and on with just the parking lights and I still can shut them off with the factory switch.

One other thing this mod does is it leaves the low beam lamps on when the high beam is on....Before the mod (stock), when the high beam is activated, the fog lamp AND the low beam lamp are turned off....
I notice that is is MUCH brighter with the mod, but one question: Is this too much of a load for the switch, to have six bulbs active at the same time?

I'm curious as to why Toyota did not want the fog lights on with the high beams. Is it possible that together the combination would draw too many amps from the alternator?

I think it's a DOT/NHSTA requirement that low beams/fogs can't be on when high beams are on (I seem to remember reading something about this in the list of checks when importing a vehicle). I really doesn't make sense, as you're only going to have the highs on when there are no vehicles in sight to be bothered by your fogs/lows. OTOH, if your highs are on, it means you're looking far down the road, so you don't need fogs/lows to be on.
