Agree about Firestone. The one near me acted like they had lifted truck phobia and wouldn't touch it.

No. The LBJ's are shot when they have a ridiculously low amount of slack in them. Something along the line of .010, I believe? Way lower than most other vehicles I've seen. But at this stage they CAN seperate! The slack might be slightly noticeable if you know what you are feeling for in the wheel, but not likely. The only sure fire way of knowing is to jack up the vehicle by the lower control arm, slide a bar or pipe under the tire, and lift up on it while looking for slack in the ball joint. I recommend being pro-active. If you have a 4Runner with over 100k miles, especially if you off road, just go ahead and replace them. It could save the life of your vehicle, but most importantly that of your family and yourself.

I like Moog. I sold them for years, and have installed many more sets. I never had to warranty out a Moog product, although others may not have had such luck. They are still holding up nicely, and I am way hard on my truck.
To me, you get what you pay for. The only way I'll go with an off brand aftermarket product is if it is WAAAYYYY cheaper to do so and it comes with a lifetime warranty. But then again, I am a mechanic. If you aren't, why not buy quality and only pay someone to install it once.

Hey guys, new member here. I thought i would chime in on the install.
I installed both upper and lower ball joints on my 01 runner about two months ago.
However, I had a recent failure of one of the lower ball joints, i believe due to my incorrect installation. Luckily i was in a parking lot when it happened and was not on the road.
When installing the castle nut on the ball joint make sure to tighten the bolt as far up as possible. I had only tightened the castle nut enough to make the hole for the cotter pin align with grooves in the nut.
The OP seems to have done it correctly from his pictures. In OP's last the nut seems to be much higher than the pin which i believe is the proper way to do it.

I will be reinstalling a new joint tomorrow, as some of the threads may have been stripped on the failed joint when it came off. I will try to update once it is complete.
If anyone can chime in and confirm my thinking that would be great.

That is why they make torque wrenches Beach4RunnerNC. 105ft/lbs on that castle nut, or torque it to the said torque, then keep tightening until the holes line up.

The service manual i have doesn't specify a torque amount for the castle nuts, only 'install as removed'.
I think once torqued correctly, the hole for the cotter pin will be past the top of the castle nut, like in OP's pic.

I must have two numbers swapped on accident, because the list I have has the left (driver's side) lbj is part # 43340-39456.
(pass. side) Right side lbj is part # is 43330-39558.
or the parts tech at the stealership in great falls, mt has dislexia.
