How to replace rear shocks/struts

Quick easy question, I believe: when replacing the rear shocks/struts (never know which they are), do I need worry about the spring at all? In other words, if I replace each side, one at a time, do I need to compress it? Will it fly out?

I have all the tools I would need, and I am mechanically inclined, or so I think I am, but I don't want to get into compressing springs, I'll leave that for the pros.

The rear springs will come out with just a little persuasion without a spring compressor. You need to remove the shocks, and disconnect the swaybar links. You may need to disconnect the panhard bar as well. If you need more room to work remove the spare tire first- you will thank me for that one !

No need to compress the spring when removing the rear shock

Interesting .... I am going to do the same thing and was told all i needed to do was take off the shocks and then go at the springs . The shocks are not a big deal since I am replacing with 5100's anyway so the gotta come off. I was told to put a jack under the one side of axle at a time and flex it and it should give me plenty of room for a quick swap , then replace with the new shocks .
