Yes, but I am unsure the previous history. The steering rack bushings have already been replaced with the red poly kind.

I know this thread is old but I have a quick question. Do you have to lift the truck off the ground to do this or something specific? I have a 2002 with the new style and I can't loosen the outer lock nut. Also, my sway bar blocks my torque wrench, do I need to remove it?

Hoping to get another opinion. Currently getting a clunk when the wheel is almost turned to the right. Minor shimmy around 70mph but other than that the steering seems normal for a 230k mile vehicle. Really would like to just replace the guide instead of the whole rack. See video for for play in rack. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

update on my mysterious clunk that was fixed by re-torquing the old-model guide.
It lasted about a year, and the clunk came back. Can diminish it by re-torquing but will not totally disappear. The long-term solution is to change the guide to the new model

Take the rack guide out and check it out. If worn, replace.
A failing steering rack doesn't just clunk. It leaks and then you start to lose steering. Mine failed almost completely at 205k miles due to a minor accident but was leaking considerable amounts of PS fluid before then.

Replaced the 4 parts today... gave myself a scare when the new guide was different than the original. Referred back here and felt better!

The torque spec in that picture is for the locking ring not the guide cap. You tighten it down to 18 ft/lbs then back it off 19 degrees (roughly 1/4" on the housing. I couldn't tell you why yours is leaking from this mod. There's no fluid in that compartment.

This may help some people better understand how to set the tension. The red arrow is the starting point where you torque it to 18 ft lbs. The yellow arrow is 19 degrees looser. The black paint is just a quick reference to make sure nothing moves over time.
This is very helpful - I think I loosened mine more than 19 degrees when I installed because I have a bit of wandering on the road, as well as a shake in my steering wheel over bumps. I will retighten and I hope this solves the problem.
I already replaced ITREs, OTREs, LCA bushings, rack bushings, LBJs, sway bar bushings and links so I hope this solves the problem once and for all

Also I hate Photobucket these days! - its killed the OP pics!
P.S. as all discerning3rd gen owners will probably have at least one lying about. LBJ castle nuts are the perfect size. and as it is low torque I suspect I'll be able to get away with doing just one. Alas my "Mini" torque wrench is 3/8" and my 24mm socket is 1/2" drive.. so I need to go foraging for an adaptor.

Received my parts from camelback in a massive oversized box and guessing the 3 other parts slammed into the guide for 1300 miles on its way here. Guess I'm putting up with clunking for another week.

After replacing the lower control arm bushings on both side of my runner, I've noticed the steering rack has started leaking a little bit of fluid on the passenger side. It still steers and seems to work fine, but I would like to take care of this as soon as possible. I've checked out rebuilding the rack, but that does not look like a good option since from what I've read they are not made to be rebuilt. My 4runner is a 2002, with just about 250k on it. I've seen the $700 oem racks. But have also seen some in the $2-300 range that are new and not remans. Just wanted to thank the OP for the thread and the how-to. I replaced my '97 rack guide with the updated style, and all the highway steering wheel shimmy is gone! It's like driving a whole new car. Unbelievable. Saved me from doing my next planned steps, inner and outer tie rod ends. Thanks again!

We replaced the guide on my original rack, not the entire steering rack. There were just parts ordered from an online OEM Toyota dealer.
