How to verify used engine is a match 1999 TR4

Please help me shop for a used engine for my 1999 3.4L.

I have a guy who says he has a motor from a Tacoma with 120k miles, been sitting for a few years. How can I tell if it is a match for my vehicle?

Unluckiest new Toyota owner here without a clue.

Thanks for any advice.

Most of the 5VZ-FE's will swap with each other, I can't remember if there's anything that needs to be done to mate it to a 3rd Gen.

This may be a question better suited for the 3rd gen section.

There were some minor changes between the early and later 3.4's but I don't think anything that would prevent a swap.
I will move to 3rd gen section to see if anyone has more info

A 3.4 is a 3.4 is a 3.4. with MINOR differences.

Here's my question for you.

What is wrong with your motor?

MINOR differences between the 3.4L are:

Fuel Injectors
Throttle body.

HOWEVER!!!

Like I said before, a 3.4L is a 3.4 is a 3.4.

All you'd have to do is swap the upper part of the engine, IE Fuel Injectors and Intake, to make it work perfectly in your truck.

The Block, Head, Pistons, ect are all the same. Just MINOR differences between the small stuff.

If you need more info, look in the "Stuck" thread and get my info and either call or shoot me a text.

Oil light came on while on the highway at about 70 and by the time I went across four lanes and stopped apparently the damage was done. Next day after tow I checked dipstick and it was dry. I put in three quarts and it started up OK with just a noise, like a repeating knock, I guess you would call it. I left it with mechanic who drove it and said needs replacement or rebuild of motor. Drove it to another mechanic and it will only do about 30 MPH and blows a lot of white smoke. He said the same thing. I bought this from a used car dealer with no warranty of course and he offered to replace the motor, i.e. cover the labor. We've started shopping around for a motor.

Thanks to you and everyone else for the replies.

The big difference is throttle-by-wire on the '01-'02 4Runners, and I believe it went into Tacos about the same time. I agree any 5VZ-FE can be made to work, but if I had a choice I'd match what was on my truck, i.e. TBW or not TBW. Also, 5VZ-FE's for T100's were introduced pre-1996, are not OBDII's and were built for EGR's, and so by virtue of being older and 'more different' should probably be avoided as well. Get an OBDII which is the vast majority.

So nobody checked the oil on this baby? I'd never even buy a lawnmower without looking at the oil.

A 5VZ-FE out of a T-100 has the oil dip stick in a different location. I believe it is too far back for a 4Runner. FYI.

Any 3.4l will work. Be it out of a 4runner, tacoma, tundra, t100 or whatever. Anything differnent will be small and you have everything you would need to change over on your old motor.
None of the 3rd gen or 1st gen tacomas had drive by wire, dont know of any 3.4l or any pre 02 toyotas that had drive by wire. It was not until the 4th gen and 2nd gen tacoma with the 4.0l that drive by wire was used. So dont worry about that.

This is just flat out wrong. The 2001 and 2002 3rd gen 4Runners with the 3.4L V6 5VZ-FE (only motor offered) were equipped with throttle by wire. Viz:

Further, this section of the 2002 4Runner FSM describes the system:

Either way the TB can be swapped from the OP's original motor.

I didn't say it couldn't...I just said it is easier if you don't have to--so if you have the choice, go with the same type as your own motor.

Then the other poster jumped in and said TBW 5vz-FE 4Runners don't exist. They do.

Although you can get good money for a TBW throttle body, so it might be worth the effort to do an '01-'02. You can't swap out many of the parts on the TBW TB, so people have to swap the whole TB if the IAC or throttle motor takes a crap. Big $$ to buy new.

Also, it is easier if both are Cali-type two-cat emissions or Federal one-cat emissions, so that you don't have to swap exhaust manifolds, you can swap at the crossover/manifold connection. The exhausts are different all the way from the manifold back.

In all my years as a mechanic i have never seen a 5vz 3.4l with drive by wire. In fact i just did a bunch of work on a 02 Limited and it was a cable driven throttle. Now that said different years, countries, fed or cali emission could make the difference.

The TBW still has a cable installed, but it is a back-up for limp-home mode. It only opens the butterfly halfway. But visually, it all LOOKS almost the same. There is only Cali.-type emissions in those years as the Cali. system became Federal in 2001. All '01-'02 4Runners in sold in North America had the 5VZ-FE with the TBW system and Cali-type two-cat exhaust. ALL of them. We see them a lot on here, I'm not making it up.

I don't know about JDM or Argentina or elsewhere outside North America but those are Surfs or Hilux SW4's, not 4Runners.
