Wow.
Breaks didnt help? I'm guessing no brakes on a downhill so you have to limit it by gear speed.
Must of been some kind of emergency....because he was already almost at red line when pulled into an even lower gear.

Honestly, I feel bad for OP. I hope it's not as horrible as it sounds.
OP, please excuse the members here. You basically walked into a thread saying you changed your oil but forgot to put the drain plug back on and now you have a red light on the dash & the truck sounds a bit funny.
Hey bud, if it makes you feel any better... a long while back I was driving my old 4Runner offroad in 4LO and got going too fast down a hill in 2nd gear. I shifted fast into 1st but in the time it took me to shift I sped up more.... hit about 8k for a second and blew the headgasket instantly.
This is off topic, but has anyone else here ever been coming to a stop light going down a hill and thought of what you would do if your brakes gave out? I don't know why, but I always think of this when a light turns red and I have to hit the brakes fast. I'm thinking, ok, 2nd and low gear are back. So if my brakes go out I'm going to grab the lever and yank it back asap! Anyways . . .
Well, if your tcase took a dump. They are kinda easy to find. Shouldn't be to hard to replace. Shit happens. And it happened to you. I'm sorry bud. Always , always check your vehicle when off roading before going anywhere. I usually always get out of 4lo right after I don't need it anymore. Kinda annoying to drive on straight dirty roads. And after off roading. I make sure I'm in 2wd , check stuff visually under the truck. Make sure I didn't mess up anything. Especially brake lines.
Yeah I'm pretty sure I pressed the button. Pretty sure I always press the button. Tested this morning and you can't go in to R without depressing it.
Found a local transmission shop that does free diagnostics. Going to have them take a look and tell me what I need to fix. nissanh I do have the sound in both 4lo and 4hi, so perhaps it is the chain.
As it turns out, it appears this transmission does not prevent this in 'R' or 'Park'. I'm gathering from the warnings in the user manual. Interesting indeed.
Now that's kind of confusing (manual).
I thought L and 2 are for steep grades going up or down.
My last off-road vehicle was v8 Bronco. I never touched 4lo. Got the toyota and can't climb a curb in 4hi with 33s. Sad. I used to hate shifting in and out of hi and lo but used to it now.
Eh... If its a downslope, you can use L or 2 in 2WD and riding the brake, if a deep upwards climb i can see the need for 4L on top of that.Yea true but heats up trans like crazy. Toyota says this to cover they're ass. I try to get out of 4lo asap to cool trans on long decent.
I remember my bronco could get so hot I could smell the fluid burning.
