I did the nasty to my drivetrain...

Honestly, I feel bad for OP. I hope it's not as horrible as it sounds.

OP, please excuse the members here. You basically walked into a thread saying you changed your oil but forgot to put the drain plug back on and now you have a red light on the dash & the truck sounds a bit funny.

Actually your pretty fortunate of the members on here. Everyone is extremely nice when people do really stupid things that make absolutely no sense or appear to have even a scintilla of basis....AND THEN ASK FOR HELP FIXING IT.

Really...I'm being serious. I am glad because then its just a bunch of stupid internet arguing. Then I have to find another site to help me when I DO SOMETHING REALLY REALLY F'N STUPID EVEN A INFANT WOULDN'T HAVE DONE.

5 speed?

Hey bud, if it makes you feel any better... a long while back I was driving my old 4Runner offroad in 4LO and got going too fast down a hill in 2nd gear. I shifted fast into 1st but in the time it took me to shift I sped up more.... hit about 8k for a second and blew the headgasket instantly.

IS this 5 speed? then you really cannot engage 1st at high speed like 10 mph.

OP, I guess you pressed the button while shifting. I made a habit not to press it after R.

4WD Low and 4 WD Hi both using the same chain so wonder why the sound is only when 4Hi

Sorry to hear what happened.

Dude... I guess you learned your lesson on that one. I don't understand how you missed all the signals that something was off, but good luck getting it fixed.

This is off topic, but has anyone else here ever been coming to a stop light going down a hill and thought of what you would do if your brakes gave out? I don't know why, but I always think of this when a light turns red and I have to hit the brakes fast. I'm thinking, ok, 2nd and low gear are back. So if my brakes go out I'm going to grab the lever and yank it back asap! Anyways . . .

That's what the steel front bumper is for! Just kidding. Emergency brake, downshifting, and emergency paths. I think that would be faster/probably more safe than slamming it into 4Lo.

Yeah I'm pretty sure I pressed the button. Pretty sure I always press the button. Tested this morning and you can't go in to R without depressing it.

Found a local transmission shop that does free diagnostics. Going to have them take a look and tell me what I need to fix. nissanh I do have the sound in both 4lo and 4hi, so perhaps it is the chain.

Its very likely you chipped a tooth on the front ring gear in the diff. If its only happening in 4H now, and it feels rotational, it wouldn't be the t-case. If it was the t-case, its likely that it wouldn't work in 4H at all, and maybe even in 2H. My bet is the front diff, I would have them take a hard look there first.

A.

I forgot to mention, I don't currently have a working e brake. Otherwise that's what I would do. I was thinking I could also stick my leg out the door and stop Fred flintstone style

Well, if your tcase took a dump. They are kinda easy to find. Shouldn't be to hard to replace. Shit happens. And it happened to you. I'm sorry bud. Always , always check your vehicle when off roading before going anywhere. I usually always get out of 4lo right after I don't need it anymore. Kinda annoying to drive on straight dirty roads. And after off roading. I make sure I'm in 2wd , check stuff visually under the truck. Make sure I didn't mess up anything. Especially brake lines.

My last off-road vehicle was v8 Bronco. I never touched 4lo. Got the toyota and can't climb a curb in 4hi with 33s. Sad. I used to hate shifting in and out of hi and lo but used to it now.

I didn't do what you did but I'm having a similar problem with my 2001. 4wd won't engage and just makes a horrible clunking coming from the transfer case(?) and the driveshaft just spins and never engages. 4wd will work with the center diff locked although it makes clunking noises sometimes. Anybody have any ideas?

Well...

Not sure how that is even possible.

I had a buddy who had a girlfireind who drove a Samurai. Sometimes he'd shift her t-case into neutral when she was parked somewhere.

Poor girl. Truck wouldn't move, just sit there and rev.

LOL.

Did we confirm if you have an auto or manual?

If it's an auto, I am boggled as to why this would be possible. GM's HydraMatic transmission...in the 1940's prevented this from happening. Design flaw, or is something wrong with OP's tranny? I'm not about to go test it on mine. Lol.

As it turns out, it appears this transmission does not prevent this in 'R' or 'Park'. I'm gathering from the warnings in the user manual. Interesting indeed.

Now that's kind of confusing (manual).

I thought L and 2 are for steep grades going up or down.

Yea true but heats up trans like crazy. Toyota says this to cover they're ass. I try to get out of 4lo asap to cool trans on long decent.

I remember my bronco could get so hot I could smell the fluid burning.

I can relate to that. Minus owning a bronco. I was at a car wash. And was blocked in by a lot of people. So there was a little path to the road but I had to get over a curb. I felt stupid that I couldn't go over the curb in 2wd lol.

Here we have a lifted, fully armored truck that couldn't go up a curb lol. Although I think if I approached the curb at angle I could have.

Eh... If its a downslope, you can use L or 2 in 2WD and riding the brake, if a deep upwards climb i can see the need for 4L on top of that.

Although i have been offroad in the snow before with drops on both sides. Was in 4L and L and praying for life going downhill lol.

Turns out it was the front diff. Didn't pay to have it disassembled but their stethoscopes found a ton of shrapnel/shavings floating around in there. TCase checked out fine.

So...anyone have a good 98 Ltd diff (4.30 gears) for sale, or have recommendations on where I should be looking for one?

OP - guess this is good news!!
Looks like you get a new front diff and new oil in the front diff!
I don't have any parts for you, but you came out pretty good from what it could be!

I just wanna know how the hell you got to 40 MPH in 4Lo.. In my truck, on stock gears, she doesn't wanna go any faster than 16-17, and that's pushing it.
