A couple months back I convinced myself i needed a truck, so I got a decent deal on my beloved 4Runner for a 2015 F150 Lariat with everything but 4wd. I. hate. it. Quality control issues drive me crazy and this thing has every one of them. So i cruised past the toyota dealer today and they have a decent selection, but i can't seem to find a trail edition anywhere. How rare have these become anyway?

Part of me thinks the Limited may be a better option. Anyway, looking for advice. Limited? Or another trail?

Cheers.

Depends on what you plan on using it for. Mostly in town, creature comfort? Need the off road goodies of the trail? Maybe mod out an SR5 how you want it. I know you didn't mention SR5 but you can always start with that and make it yours.

For me, it comes down to 4WD, locking rear diff., and KDSS suspension.
My vote goes to the TE. Yes, you can put a locking rear diff. on the SR5, but I find the KDSS makes a significant difference on pavement as well as off-road.
You have to get what makes you happy, but you have already admitted to a mistake, trading your old Runner for a Ford, so you should at least thoroughly test drive all three variants of the Runner before plunging in again.

This first part isn't constructive; you traded a 4Runner Trail for a 2WD F150?:loco:

I've read that Trails are getting tougher to find, so you may need to be willing to travel to pick one up.

I put >1,000 miles on a rental SR5 4WD and realized how great KDSS is on the road.

You already had a modded 2010 TE. The fact that you are even considering an LE tells me that you might not be going off-road as much before... For whatever reason.

I had a modded 07 FJ supercharged with all the bells and whistles, icon suspension, armored, 33"s, etc. Kid came along and the FJ was traded in. Aside from missing the supercharger, I have no regrets. Times change. Priorities change. Life goes on. 99% of my vehicle time right now is spent on road. I like the fact that if I want to pursue the off-road route again I can. There are some very heavily modified and off-road capable LE's all over this forum.

Can't go wrong with either in my opinion. Just be honest with yourself

TEs are getting really hard to find. I've called eight dealers within the gulf states region and have only found 1! There are a few in Colorado. And the Gulf states don't offer KDSS!

You gotta get out your checkbook for a TE in Colorado and be ahead of the pack. I'd recommend getting friendly with the internet sales person, tell them exactly what you want and put a deposit down and wait. My dealer (whom I like a lot) does not hesitate to tell you most TE's are spoken for before they even hit the lot. A couple tried to buy mine out from under me as we were doing the paperwork and I was like, not.

The non Premium TE's are the big seller here, you are more likely to find a TEP. I wanted a sunroof but was adamant against the SofTex interior so I just bought a TE with every option on the checklist. Mine is the most loaded TE I have seen to date, but it came with a price. I got the $750 30th Anniv. discount and a couple hundred dollars off on top of that but they stole my trade in 2002 Sport 4Runner from me so they had wiggle room.

found a trail edition up in Merritt island. Graphite, base model. WTH did they do to these things? I hate the new gauge cluster, it went from appealing to appalling. And now the sun roof is only in the "premium" model? Wow... just wow...

Also drove a graphite XSP 4wd with tan leather (didn't really match at all). talk about zero throttle response! lol. It barely got out of its own way! Kicking myself for letting go of such a good thing.

Just curious, what kind of issues did you have?

I like the 2015 Limited. I looked at a TRD Pro, Trail Premium, Limited, and an SR5 before I bought my Limited. My deciding factor was the FT4WD, but to say the least I did like all the extra features the Limited comes with. Keyless entry is awesome, and the seats are so much nicer than the TEP's Softex seat. I do off-road as well, but I want to build an overlanding rig that is cush on the interior for long trips. The off-road items I figured I could add at a later date (lockers, etc.), with exception of the crawl control stuff I just never saw myself using. It is more expensive in the long run, but at least it'll be everything I want.

leather on the seat was already wearing at 3k miles, the tolerances on the transmission are so tight that adding larger wheels and tires (although they were within stock specs) caused the transmission to vibrate while in overdrive. Sort of like the sound you get when you're driving a manual and floor it without downshifting first. You can't recalibrate the '15 models after increasing wheel size (i went from 18 to 20 in wheels). I didn't like not being able to fit it in my garage. transporting surfboards was more difficult than you might think. All the additional display information was vestigial at best, and most were redundant. The gas mileage took a HUGE hit with the new wheels/tires (BMF novakane with Terra grappler G2, 265/55/20 so its not like i was running monster tires). Oh, and i like to be able to perform a U-Turn without backing up!!!

Trucks are stupid. Talk about buyer's remorse.

I got my flame suite on for the next few sentences: The 2010-13 Gauge Cluster was hideous to me, orange and 3 round-ish rings BLAH!:barf:, on the other hand 2014+ has nice all in one blue and white wicked looking, sexy, panties dropping cluster. In fact if they didn't do everything that is a change for 2014 + TE, id still be driving a LandCruiser 100 series and not buy a 4Runner./Flame suite off.

Now as to your topic, id say TE is the best choice all around. Furthermore, I was in the same boots where I had delivered to me and was a signature away from owning F-150 FX Appearance Package Fully Loaded in white. I had a pen in my hand, truck washed and delivery ready outside and paper in front of me but then something told me im making a mistake. I told them, I am not doing it. The saleman jaw dropped lol. I took my $1000 and walked back to Toyota dealership where I saw her.......rest is history lol.:bravo:

I would go for a TEP but I may be a little biased.

In 2012, I purchased a F150 ecoboost 4x4 crew cab. Loved it at first then the QC issues started. At first I didn't mind because after all, it is a Ford. Then it started knocking, puking oil into the intercooler, and randomly the truck would just shut off or not start. After not much help from Ford, I traded that POS July 2014 for my 2014 TEP and haven't looked back.

I really use trucks like they are meant to be used and I sometimes miss having one (that runs), but I've been making due with my 4runners and a light 16' trailer I picked up for cheap.

Hey man, I live in Indialantic and got my 4R from Mike Erdman. I have no input for you, I was just stoked to see another from 321!

TE's are very hard to find, I had the same experience. My dealer didn't have any in stock and did a locate for a 200 mile radius. They found 4 TE's, two had pending deals and the other two the dealers didn't want to dealer trade. The two that wouldn't dealer trade wouldn't match the deal I was getting. I ended up getting a SR5 Premium and will mod it to my liking.

If I got the chance to take a swing at it again ...

I would have gotten everything my Trail Premium has minus the KDSS

There were two different gauge clusters. I had the "3D" one as opposed to the bland one you were referring to. See here. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/102948-gauge-cluster.html

So you're saying you wouldn't want KDSS? why? Just curious. I test drove on that had it today and noticed a difference in how solid it felt.

I would guess it is either limiting his suspension travel with Icon Stage 7 (not exactly sure what is included in the S7) or it doesn't do much for him with the Icon suspension. Either way if you noticed a difference in ride and thought it was worth the extra cash I would get the KDSS. I love mine but my suspension setup is much less wild, I would guess the Icon set up he is running was upwards of 6k
