So like just a half inch body lift in the rear and have some rake?
A body lift is an all or nothing proposition on a 4Runner. You can't install one only on the front or the rear. A body lift would have to be installed all around, unless you're talking about a pickup truck where the bed is separate from cab... and that would just look funny.
Crazy, I dont think I've had any of that on mine, atleast not that I've noticed and I know ive hit the bumper hard because theres a huge dent in the tubing. I'll check tomorow though. I know I had trouble with the bumper rubbing on the body and i shimmed it down and trimmed some of the bumper off to keep it away but that was the inner part, not where your hitting now (looks like you had some rubbing there too though)
EDIT: I'm sure you've seen these but
http://www.toyota-4runner.org/sale-suspension-wheels-tires/141295-fs-1-2-bodylifts-3rd-gens.html could fix your issue and a half inch wont mess too much with your spacing with the ARB, sliders, etc
Yeah, I have some rubbing on the body at the front of the bumper wings on either side, at the back of the rear wheel well. If I take the bumper off the rig for any reason, I'll be cutting some material out of there.
I've been looking at those 1/2" body lifts for a long time, but I keep going back and forth between that and just doing the full 1" so I've got the option to do 35's down the road without hacking up my firewall too bad. Thanks for the reminder though.
I cant tell you how many times i have gone back and forth on the 1/2" body lift, looks like this was just the push i needed. I need to check and see if mine has inflicted any harm similar to that. Thanks for the heads up Nick, and thanks for sharing the Cedro pictures.
No problem. Like I said in my reply to TCMach above, I've been in the same boat, going back and forth about the 1/2" body lift. I guess we'll see what the future holds. If you decide to go that route please, please take some good before/after pictures. I have yet to see a good before/after comparison in that thread.
For what it's worth, we have a 1" body lift and ordered the CBI rear to compensate for it, essentially putting us in the same predicament with little clearance. Guess we better avoid those bigger curbs at the mall :wink2:
Thanks for the heads up.
You're welcome. I would definitely stick to the handicap access ramps and speed bumps if I were you. :tongue1:
I have this exact same issue with my custom rear bumper, and I designed in 1" of vertical spacing between the bumper and the fender.
I was surfing Sonoran Steel website the other day and saw a potential fix. Steve sells a set of rear body mounts that will limit the flex between the frame and body:
Rear 4Runner Polyurethane Body Mounts (Pair) - $75.00 : Sonoran Steel, Sonoran Steel Custom Metal Fabrication L.L.C. Custom Toyota Truck Parts
I've been thinking about trying them. Anyone try these yet?
Bandit, that's a great find! I didn't realize that SS sold such a thing. It's interesting to hear that you're having the same issue, even with 1" of spacing. The product narrative on SS website indicates that they had the same problem while making their bumpers with a 1" gap.
Lets page Mr. Steve. sschaefer3 , any thoughts on this matter?
I just went out and looked and I'm not rubbing anywhere either. CBI did a good job on giving my bumper a good even 3/8" to 1/2" gap all the way around to allow for body flex, but it doesn't look like it's much more than what you have for a gap so I dunno
I do have a 2" body lift, so I don't know if that comes into play as far as the amount of body flex during suspension flex. I've taken some hard hits to the bumper itself and haven't noticed it getting into the body at all. Same goes for my front ARB bumper.
Dude, maybe you're not wheeling hard enough?
:heh: kidding.
I don't think the body lift would affect how much the body moves in relation to the frame, unless the body lift pucks stiffen the assembly somehow. Like you mentioned, my ARB has not been an issue and it sits closer to the body than the CBI. However the CBI has taken more hits on the vertical plane, while the hits on the ARB have been more along the horizontal plane.
Check out the link that Bandit posted to SS's page. It seems to indicate that the rear body mounts are softer/have more movement than the others.
Thanks for the heads up guys. We will be doing some testing on this issue here in the shop today to see if we can get to the bottom of the problem. It seems as though the culprit is soft/loose body mounts causing the body and frame to flex once the suspension has reached its limit, rather than the impact on the bumper that is causing the issue here. In which case a stiffer body mount may fix the problem. But we will look at it from every angle to be sure. Thanks again for letting us know. We'll post up our findings.
I'm always glad to be your guinea pig, Nathan.

hwell:
I'd say it's a combination of the body mounts flexing, and the bumper taking a hit at the same time. My rear axle rarely sees the bumpstops (ie suspension has reached its limit), and it's still a problem on my rig. The entire frame on these vehicles actually flexes quite a bit. I had mine on a two post lift the other day and the gap between the (CBI) bumper and the body widened up quite a bit due to the frame flexing downward at the rear under the extra weight. Either way, most of your customers probably won't run into this problem, but it might be worth considering the clearances with which your bumpers are manufatured in relation to the body.
Appreciate all the information you put in your thread. Very helpful.
I was also curious if you have gotten back to 4wheeling in Ouray? If you haven't done Engineer Pass you need to. If you do the Alpine Loop you would do Engineer Pass and Cinnamon Pass back to Animas Forks. The first 6 miles o Engineer from the Ouray side should be a nice trail for 2001.
You have really great setup. Really enjoy reading about it. If you happen to be in Ouray mid September sometime maybe we can do some trails together. I have been going up there for over 20 years.
Jim
Thanks, Jim. I appreciate you taking the time to read through the build. I have not been back to Ouray since our last trip. My Wife was pregnant at the time and now we're very busy raising a 1 year old girl. I skipped Engineer because it didn't fit in with the goals for our route, but I'll be back to run it someday. Black Bear is on my short list as well. I'll keep the September time frame in mind, it's probably much less crowded at that time of year.
Also noahjokc would you mind editing your last post to remove all of the pictures/excess text from the quote. When you quote an entire post like that it just clutters things up.
Dude, noahjokc. Quoting all the pictures, really?
We need a facepalm smiley for things like that
jacob7071, thanks! Good looking out!
