I spent some time there in the late 60s. Everyone was either 18 or 19. I'm sure things have improved at Cherry Point or at least I hope they have. There were 100 guys in an open squad bay. Double bunk beds. They were remodeling when I left - building rooms that held smaller groups of men. Maybe 4 - 6 to a room vs. 100. I forget what the room config. was to be - something like 6 to a room for Pvt - LCpl and maybe 4 to a room for Cpl. E5s got their own room.
Most of the 03s returning from Viet Nam went to Lejeune, but many were on Med. profiles and ended up at Cherry Point as they could no longer serve in infantry units.
The Commandant came down once for a visit. Cherry Point had the lowest reenlistment rate of any Marine Corp base at that time. He wanted to know why. If his eyes were open, he saw part of it.
Outside the main gate is Havelock, N. C. - small town. 30 mi. away towards the ocean is Morehead City and Atlantic Beach.
Back then when you were given base liberty in the evening, you had to have on slacks, collared shirt; dress shoes. No t-shirts, sandals; shorts of any kind allowed. You went to the beach dressed that way. If the MPs saw a short haired guy in beach attire, they ID'd him and if he had a green card(active duty military id at that time) he was escorted back to the Cherry Point. You got to met with your Top Sgt. first thing in the morning. Marines have always had short hair and the long hair thing was well underway with civilians. Marines stuck out like sore thumbs. I would hope the M. C. got away from treating people this way. You have to let a man breath once in awhile.
Humidity there is a tad bit higher than Yuma.
You have wheels. It helps, especially in that part of the world. Lots of stock car racing not too far away. Myrtle Beach, S. C. will put your eyes out during spring break. The southeast has the hottest women on the planet.

I think you will like the East coast, but you will hate the mud on the trails. at least i do. I have to say i miss the West after being in Tennessee for a year.

Welcome to NC. Bring some sun and heat with you please. It's frickin end of March here and there's a chance of snow and sleet tomorrow. I should be wearing shorts and flip flops by now.

Was never stationed at Lejeune, but went down there a couple of times to visit a buddy from home who was. Cherry Point was just up the road. Yes - Florida is paradise compared to Lejeune. Just about any place is.

Actually I do still have the TE wheels I was going to sandblast them the other day but ended up sandblasting motorcycle engine parts.
Sounds like a good time. I may be dragging the girlfriend across the country with me though...

I was stationed in Key West, FL for four years. I loved it. I actually applied for a government civilian job at the Joint Interagency Task Force South down there, if I get it I'll get out and take my happy ass down there, and I'll be a Divemaster on the weekends.

I got everything squared away and I've reenlisted for another four years. I also got my orders pushed to the right a month, that being said I'll be in NC around 30 Oct, hopefully I can find a place around New Bern or Newport. Any suggestions on places out there?
I'm not looking forward to towing my trailer cross country. I towed my old boat from Key West, FL to Yuma, AZ a few years ago sitting around 9800lbs (4runner/boat filled to the gills with stuff). This time its a trailer full of motorcycles.
