. Today after installing my rear led bar, while running the wires on the driver side I noticed very bad rust in the rear fender. When I removed the plastic pecieses and pulled the carpet little right under the rear driver seat next to the wheel fender there was rust. And moisture. If I push hard enough I can probably poke my finger through :( I sprayed wd-40 inside and outside of the fender. I believe the cause of this is, I sprayed 3M rubberized undercoat in the rear fenders. Thinking it will protect from salt and rocks. And I believe the water got behind some cracks and just sat there. Although the other side seems good. Any input , advice please.

it looks relatively significant... enough to address it very soon. cutting that area and replacing with a metal piece would be nice since it can be covered up with the carpet... but preventing it from getting worse is important....

rust converter might be an option... would love to hear from some east coast folks that have to deal with rust frequently and often. definitely plenty of threads on here that address rust on the undercarriage.
 
I would be interested to see what a wire brush and some cleaning would do for the interior first and then treat accordingly. Notice bit of moisture in the interior so kinda wondering if that door seal is holding up or some gromit letting some water come in under your carpet.
 
I notice few areas where the gromet seal is ripped Nd the water sits there, mostly on the outer part of the door. It would be probably a good thing to replace the door seals.

I'm thinking that me and my.buddy will probably.end up cutting that section out and welding new piece. It doesnt really have to be the best looking since you don't really see it. Does anyone know if they actually sell the fender ? So you could cut a section out and weld it ?
 
Think I'm actually going.to just bring it to body shop and get a quote. If it's reasonable I'll let the body shop fix it. What,do you guys think is a reasonable price for this fix ?

Dont know. I don't know where the sunroof drain tube runs. It could be. I never though of that. I have come to few conclusions.

Bad door seals,
bad gormet,
bad sunroof drain tube,
3m rubberized undercoat,trapped water inside ( although it's been on the car for 1 year exact and the rust looks older then 1 year , no?)

Does Toyota sell a replacement kit for fender ? As on cut out weld ??
 
I am curious on what melted the carpet? An acid spill?

What ever it is, remove the eat and carpet.
Wire brush it, clean and paint it. Don't install the carpet and on a rainy day, look for the leak

If you look on the bottom edge of your rear quarter panel you will ser the end of the tube sticking down. Those tubes run on either side of the truck and I believe clip above the rear wheel humps.

Could easily be bad door seals after I went back and looked at your pics better but I would pull that panel in the rear if you end up replacing those door seals and still get moisture.

Man, I'm so pissed !! I put so much $ from jdm motor, to lift, to new front end, tune up ect. Have a manual tranny sitting waiting for it to be swapped. !!! And now this. Makes me wonder if I should keep the truck or sell :(

Someone said if it's that bad in that area it probably has rust somewhere else. But I know for fact, that the frame is 0 rust and solid. The whole body is clean !! Besides this one area !!! I checked other areas of body and see NO signs of rust but that one area !

Also am told that even if cut out the rust will come back !? But how ? Is this fixable ? Will cutting it out and grinding of eliminate it ?

Does anyone sell the metal fenders ? Because how would a body shop fix a car that's been in acccident ? They have to sell replacement ?
 
I am not an auto body man. That said, I've done some body work, and sure it's fixable.

Remove all the rust. Repair or replace the steel. Find and fix how water is getting in there. Prep and paint properly, and it should be good to go.

As far as inner fender availability, they probably are available. But I doubt the whole inner fender is rotted. Replacing that properly is a lot more work, too.

I'd be inclined to remove all the rust, to see what you have to work with.

With no auto body experience, I'd be inclined to run it by a few body shops, to see what they think.

Thanks, I can say for fact that not the whole rear fender is rusted. Only that one section.

Also, one other possibility is the roof track screws could be letting water in as well. If you ever remove those bolts put some silicone on the screw and in the hole to seal it up. You will probably notice a dark spot on the headliner if this is your issue though.

Would be part #7 correct ? Bit I though the rear fender is a seperate part. Because it has gormet all around.
 
I think the only way the rust will come back is if you don't figure out what caused it I the first place. Like you mentioned, it's a very forgiving spot to fix as far as looks go, so I wouldn't sweat it too much.
 
I have put silicone on the bolts that the roof rack mounts to. The area is not cosmetic important. I agree.

So this is fixable and I shouldn't even probably think of selling my truck !!! Because I wanna fix this rust. I hope there's no other hidden areas. I'll double check everyhing !! But I'm 99% positive that is th only spot on the body.

Are there any other common areas for me to look ?
