I jumped ship and traded the Trail in on a Tundra.

I had every intention on keeping my 4Runner until the wheels fell off. I don't know why but curiosity got the best of me and I finally stopped in the dealership to see why they kept calling and emailing wanting me to trade it in (well, besides the obvious that they just want to make money off me).

I paid $36k for my Trail in 2016. It was my first new car after 20+ used. Drove it to 28 states and 3 countries. More National Parks than I can count. For those curious about the trade-in, I gave the T4R and $9,700 for a Tundra with a $47k sticker. It had 52k miles and was certainly not a pavement princess (scratched to hell would be an overstatement, but it wasn't showroom flawless for sure).

I can't believe how unfazed I am by hacking a perfectly good vehicle to pieces now compared to when I first logged on to this site. Just a few of the folks I want to thank for the insight, guidance, and entertainment in the last 3.5 years are [MENTION=65614]Antman[/MENTION] [MENTION=66316]1engineer[/MENTION] [MENTION=118321]Jetboy[/MENTION] and [MENTION=129593]MTN4RNR[/MENTION] I appreciate your contributions.

I wound up with a cement 2019 Tundra TRDOR Crewmax. In true T4R forum fashion, I had the dealer throw in the parts needed to do a Pro grille swap. Feels a bit silly to post a picture of a stock vehicle here, so I'll bow out with a picture of the T4R from our recent trip to Banff.

I hope I was able to contribute to the forum some over the last few years, and that there's not an old post from me floating around somewhere asking WILL IT RUB. BTW That leads me to one of the best pieces of advice I can give for a new member who wants to put 34s or bigger on their T4R: It doesn't matter what someone else did or saw. No two setups are exactly the same. Just be financially and psychologically prepared to do a BMC, lose your mudflaps, and dust off the BFH. Then whatever happens, it will all be cool. For God's sake don't start a new thread about it.

I'll be around for a while here and there checking in, because I spend too much time in front of too many computers. I also have some leftover parts and pieces that I'll surely be pushing in the FS thread.

Man they either gave you a hell of a deal on your trade in or came off the sticker like no other I have seen. I mean lets say they came off sticker $7,500 and you paid $9700 cash, that would mean they gave you ~$30,000 for your paid off 4runner?? There are many scenarios, but I am just curious on which side they worked with you on. I am asking because I have been getting the same calls from the dealership. I have the same year 4runner, same mileage, etc. and was thinking about possibly going the route you did with a Tundra (if the numbers are right). I just wanted to see how to attack this back and forth conversation with the dealership before I ever pulled in to see what they had to say.

That is almost exactly the scenario. They gave me $30k in trade as it sat. I got them down ~3k off sticker and had them throw in the extra parts. The thing that sealed the deal was a PNW regional rebate that is going on this month. That reduced the price of the Tundra another $4k. I assume it is so they can make room for the 2020s next month or so. They basically discounted an amount greater than the amount of depreciation I incurred over the last 3.5 years. Between that and what I thought was a pretty generous trade offer, it just made sense to me. It definitely doesn't have the personality of a 4Runner, I'll admit. It will be ultra comfortable on road trips, though. Given the MPG I got with all the heavy T4R mods I did, I may even get better mileage haha.

You’re going to love the Tundra, especially on the highway. Parking it at the mall, meh, not so much. Lol But honestly, my Tundra is coming up on 40,000 miles. The 4R is coming up on 8,000 miles and that’s with the kids using it quite a bit the past 6 months. Without those additional miles, it’d probably have 5,000 miles on it. Whenever we go anyplace, even if it is just the wife and me, we take the Tundra. The Lexus isn’t too bad but it isn’t as comfortable, even when it’s just 2 of us. When the kids come along (one is 6’4” 240 and growing and the other is a bean pole at about 175 pounds but getting tall too)... the Tundra limo back seat is a must. Big boy can’t fit in the Lexus much less the 4R back seat. The other is quickly outgrowing it too.

Loved my '07 5.7 Limited TRD with every option available. First one in Central Oregon. Got it the second day they came out. Sadly, traded it in on a '10 F150 Raptor 6.2. The Raptor was way KOOL, but not the truck the Tundra was. You gonna be happy. Good luck and so long. Gonna miss yer posts and replies.

Haha well, I guess I did retain some of the mod disease, but I wouldn't say I'm going to build it. Just personalize a bit. This is what the dash looked like on day 10 of ownership. So far I have done:
Pro grille swap
275/70/17 KO2s
Tonneau cover
Over bed tent/bike rack
Bumper chrome delete
New Android 10" head unit
Window tint
Replaced some chrome dash plastics with OEM black trim
Front facing camera
On-board wifi
De-badging
Stubby antenna

It is nice to have the bed and bed rack. It seems like it's going to make road trips much easier by not having anything on the roof, or hanging off the back. I may raise the front with 5100s just to level it out a bit, but I'll see how the rear end reacts with some weight on it first.

If anyone is interested, the Android unit I got does fit in any double din opening. It doesn't have the slick integration of the cartrim one that we like to banter about, but it is 9.0 with 4G Ram/64G ROM. I was also able to connect my Toyota GPS and retain the factory USB port. Hey, congrats on the new truck. My buddy has a 17 Tundra with a Diamondback cover he mounted his RTT on and it's a solid cover. It's much easier to use since it's not about my head, and aside from having a low belly it does pretty well on the trail. How was your Banff/Jasper trip?

congrats on the truck. They're bulletproof. My dad ran his hard on farm roads for 180k miles. got a solid 11mpg on 33's and leveling kit lol. I wish they'd update the drivetrain though. But then they wouldn't be bulletproof....

well going with a 10% discount $4700 + $1000 cash for idaho + $9700 down = $15,400 off msrp = $31,600 before trade.

mostly likely and i do see this rate at time, they probably gave you close to 12% off msrp ($5640) + $1000 cash + $9700 = $16,300 = $30,660


now $30k for a trail is a tad of a stretch from my pov unless they needed the sale to meet the monthly or quarterly sales target for the oem bonus.

either way enjoy the tundy. we swapped the 2016 BBP tacoma 4x4 for a 2018 BBP platinum 4x4. we got 33k on trade and the tundy msrp at $53k but discounted down to $47,749 before trade.

the wife loves the extra room for the GSP hunting dogs (we have 2) during the winters up here as we dont put them in the bed due to the cold up in ND.
