I just kinda, maybe sunk my 4runner a little(WITH PICS)

I just replaced my starter contacts last night, sort of a pain in the ass, you really need a u joint on the ratchet or it wont come out, there are some little holes in the starter that have rubber plugs, mine were cracked and dry so they let water in, my contacts were actually fine just corroded, I could have probably sprayed them out but it all worked out, and it was cheap too 12 bucks on amazon for a kit with contacts and a plunger.

Total of 5.4 qts. (1.2 front; 1.3 xfr; 2.9 rear). I used full supertech 75-140 full synth on rear, supertech synth blend 75-90 xfr and front. Luck!
Awesome! Went to the store and bought 6qts of redline 75w90 gl-5. 80$ later...

Again, with the truck parked on level ground, remove the fill plugs and check the condition of the gear oil in the front diff, transmission, transfer case, and rear axle.

If the gear oil in each component is not contaminated, it doesn't need to be changed.

For each component with the truck absolutely level front-to-back and side-to-side, the correct amount of gear oil is pumping it in, until it reaches the level of the fill hole. If it starts to run out of the fill hole, then it's full. DO NOT overtighten the drain or fill plugs. Especially those in the transmission and transfer case, as the housings are aluminum.

The R150F transmission capacity is approx. 2.3 qts

Add all the capacities up, and make sure you have extra so you don't run out before everything is full.

I've found it always takes just a bit more than the stated total capacity.

Thanks for the not to over tighten tip. I probably would of shrugged that off and said the tighter the better!

Just to add, I sunk my truck way higher than that and was stuck in there for a bit. My oil looked fine when checked them. Like stated just check the state of the oil before going and draining it all.

I got really lucky. I was leaning to the drivers side. Up past the fender, If it was passenger side it would have gotten in that snorkel thing in the fender. whether it needs to be drained or not i'm going to do it because it has been 50k miles. so might aswell. Thanks though!

I didn't get that sunk :biggrin2: luckily. I've heard it's a horrible job to take on. I'm hitting close to 200k so who knows, could be my turn next.

One day me and my bro hit this trail last summer thats rated a 7 out of 10 for difficulty. Its eagle rock and a very popular trail. There is a large pond to cross, usually not to bad at the beginning. Anyone in CO knows last summer we had a lot of rain and it could just flood in a few hours. Its started to poor half way up the trail, we turned around and when we got to the pond it was completely flooded. It was the only way out or go 6 miles in very very rough terrain in a downpoor. Like at idiot I hit the pond hard because I was worried and it slowed me down a lot, sucked water in the crappy cold air intake and we where stuck in a flooded pond that was filling up. Water was up to the hood. She started back up and we got out but nothing got water in it. Very very lucky.

Sounds like you need a snorkel :cheer2:

Well not I avoid water that goes above the diff, if I have to cross, I dont stop and just get across. I avoid all mud and water now. I just need to get my stock intake with deck plate and airraid installed.

So you didn't buy enough to do the transmission too? While you could use the 75w90 GL-5 in the R150F, Redline's MT-90 would be a better option.

The torque spec for the drain and fill plugs in the transmission and T-case is 27 ft-lbf.

I plan on using redline 75w90 gl-4, I've heard putting gl-5 in the tranny is a no-no and makes shifting hard. I saw the gl-4 right next to what I was getting at cost less but I was already having trouble spending 80$ on fluid. I'll go back next week probably.

It depends on the transmission. Some transmissions spec only GL-4, some can also use a GL-5. The Aisin R150F is spec'd for both. Most GL-5 gear oils these days have buffered sulfur anyway, so they won't harm yellow metals.

I ran a GL-5 75w90 gear oil in my '97 4Runner W/R150F for the first 13 or so years I owned it. Then I switched to Redline MT-90, mostly because it's an excellent gear oil, and I could get it for a better price than any other option.

Shifting has been just fine with either gear oil. But if you have a choice, I'd go with the GL-4 MT-90.

Drove through some flooded roads last week and hit a part where the road had washed out and had water up to the windshield. Got home and checked everything. All looked fine. Today my starter began to act funky. Won't kick until 2 or 3 clicks. Might have to tackle this soon. Bleh..

Oh yeah.. for oils since we're on the subject. I use mobil1. Whatever number is on sale.

yeah the rubber pieces that cover the holes were old and cracked so im sure thats how the water gets into it. you may be able to just take the plugs out and spray something in the hole in the starter housing, the contacts would have been fine if i had just cleaned them, but i had ordered the kit already off amazon so i just replaced everything for only 12 bucks. also if you cant get it started you can have a friend jab at it lightly with the jack handle while you turn the ignition. its located in the passenger front wheel well behind the upper control arm, its a 3" cyclinder that sticks out forward from the engine block.

haha... yeah. that's what i did. works fine now. I'd have to order the kit and I didn't feel like getting into all that.

It's called the bottoms. Or Austin point in google maps. It's the first woodland exit going north.

Yup exactly where I sunk my first gen runner, hang a left to go to the mouth and bam.
I grew up down there used to wheel lions day park also before it was turned into a nature preserve.
