I just realized what Toyota is Doing!

I came from an 03 Toyota PU, 3rd gen 4R, and now a 5th. And while they definitely aren't built like they used to, I would take my 5th over any US product out there.

If the Toyotas of old (90-2000) were rated a 9 (in a 1-10 scale), the equivalent of the BIG 3 (chevy, ford, dodge) would have been a 3 out of 10. I'll take the diminishing Toyota at 7 out of 10 over the ever improving domestics at a 6.

Of course these ratings are MY OPINION. Please take it as that. My opinion is solely based on what I do for a living (run a repair/performance shop).

Well, angry this morning. I was cleaning out my truck last night and the Carpet in the rear cargo area began to pull-up in several new areas. I had a problem with it pulling up near the front a few months ago. Now it's along the sides and back. It's almost looks like its not even secured, just kind of tucked-in under the plastic side panels.

So, now my 34,000 miles truck has hazy headlights (that the dealer is being complete a**holes about fixing), a carpet that's coming up in the trunk and beginning to look prematurely worn in the front footwells IMO, and my rear hatch weather-stripping pulled off a week ago.

Now, I know that carpet and weather stripping is not a huge deal. But this is not what I expect or have experienced in the past from Toyota, and I'm disappointed.....heart-broken even, as I'm a huge Toyota truck fan. So, I've decided to start thinking about ditching the 4runner before things get worse. I'm sure it would last a few more years, but in what condition?

I started to think about what else to buy and realized THERE ARE NO ALTERNATIVES! Everyone else has built trucks this way for years and Toyota has just lowered their standards and started playing down to their competition. Why should they put so much effort into building a product that can last for 10-20 years when everyone else is building disposable cars? Besides, most people buy a new car every 3-5 years anyway. But I don't want to do that. I want to keep mine for a very long time. Unfortunately, I can't think of another company that builds a high-quality off road capable SUV that's still reasonably comfortable for a family. The best I can think to do is look for a used Toyota......you know, from the good old days when you could drive your Toyota truck forever.

I'm not interested in starting a 4th vs 5th gen argument here, but my 8 year old 2004 V8 4WD Sport Edition has held up damn well, even with the minor issues I've come across.

That being said, the carpet really is just held down by the plastic trim. It's been like that as far back as my 1982 RX7. There are often a few plastic clips or screws that may hold it down, but the main carpeting is pre-molded and is mostly held in the vehicle by everything else that bolts into the car. So it is not uncommon for the carpeting to bunch or pop out under a healthy amount of use. Its not a quality issue, its just a common manufacturing process.

As for the reduction in quality of the 4Runner (and some Toyota Products in general) it has to do with competition and profit. While I don't agree with it, making your product only slightly better than your competition is a common practice these days. Have you ever tried to buy a late 90's or early 2000's Camry or Corolla? Even with over 100k they call for rather decent prices, why? Because they were well built cars for their segments and they are far more reliable and efficient than most vehicles their age. In this difficult economic time, its bad news for a car manufacturer.

Good advertisement that your vehicles hold up for a few decades and make people want to get them even close to 20 years later. Bad news when you're trying to sell the 30k+ new version of that vehicle and most people either can't afford it or would rather buy the 20 year old model because it runs as good as your current model (in their eyes).

So is it surprising that Toyota like most Manufacturers only makes their cars "Good" instead of "Great?" The majority of the World is run by corporations, not by consumers, many times people talk about how "crappy products will run companies out of business" and honestly? It doesn't happen often, Chrysler Excluded, (and god knows they did a good job at stretching how much crap product and service you can push on a consumer and get away with) the consumers often don't want to boycott or fight against the company to improve their quality because then they don't get the short term result of having their toys now. This is a far far more in depth topic that would be wasted on this thread, so we'll just leave it at consumers are irresponsible, spineless, and over all complacent towards large corporations and as a result, allow the companies to lower their quality of product and still inflate prices (on average.)

I think lots of the issue we see as reductions in quality are also tied to the fact that the MFGs must try and eek out every single extra MPG they can get to meet .gov standards.

So, they are trying to make everything lighter, thinner, etc. Hollow sounding doors, easily made better but takes adding weight (soundproofing). Thin sheet metal on the hood, skinny tires w/ 7" wheels (LTD). No auto gas cap - saves weight and cost of the mechanism.

Also, keeping in mind, the cost of T4Rs has not risen comparably over its like like lots of other cars either. In 2000 I think new LTD was $37k, now they are $43-45 - not much in comparison to many other autos. On this side, folks here that know and understand are stating that Toy does not seem to be scrimping on the quality of safety and the mechanical side, so they are pushing cost down on the interior finish side.

This is also part of the reason why vehicles such as the Yaris or Corolla are more expensive than they used to be, its also the reason why you will buy a car around 17k and end up paying the same repair costs you would on a 30k+ vehicle. Thanks to irresponsible and lazy people we've made the government force large quantities of safety equipment and standard features that raise the price of even the cheapest cars significantly.

TPMS, ABS, TRAC, Multi-Stage Adaptive SRS Systems, Multiple Emission Regulations, a stupidly restrictive obsession with CO2 compared to the other harmful greenhouse gases. Some of these are valid and welcome additions to our vehicles, while others are simply there because some idiot didn't want to accept responsibility for their mistake and forced it on someone else. This is again another topic that is far more than we need to get into this thread currently.

All these extra things cost money, and the public doesn't want to shell out the extra 5-10k it could add to even the cheapest vehicle in terms of R&D, production costs, and so on. So manufacturers cut other things to reduce the cost of the vehicle for us; such as content (auto release for gas cap, tap the key to start the 4Runner feature, ect ect) and quality of components and such.

Do you do a lot of hauling around of things in the back? Just curious if there is a reason for this? Wonder if they had an issue with whatever sprays the adhesive (if there is any used) to hold it down on yours. If for some reason it ran empty mid way through your assembly? Just a thought.

There is a TSB for this, they can be a**holes all they want but they still have to fix it.

I am really happy I purchased the extended warranty! I don't expect things to go wrong, but my 3 years will be up in November, that time has flown by with only just over 22k right now.

TSB's don't mean that the vehicle gets automatically fixed, often they are covered under factory warranty and should not have any issues. But there are times where a vehicle exhibits a similar complaint outside of the TSB's constraints (i.e. mileage, date of manufacture, VIN Range) and thus could lead to a TSB NOT being applied to a vehicle without further deliberation with the factory (depending on the expense of the part and warranty situation) and many TSB's may not be covered under warranty. TSBs are not Recalls, they are more like notices with useful information and updated parts list.

Just because the vehicle does have a TSB does not mean that part needs to be or will be replaced. Just wanted to make that clear.

Now, as for the dealership being skittish about the headlight issue? I think they're just being stupid, its covered under factory warranty and doesn't cost them a thing, so just pressure them to fix it, or file a complaint with Toyota HQ.

What do you base this on? While true that weather stripping coming up may be an annoyance, engine and drivetrain are what matter in regards 'to last forever'.

True. But you could say the same thing about a Chevy truck. In my mind, Toyotas should be built to a higher standard. But, I understand Toyota's reasons for changing. Why should they try so hard when the average consumer doesn't demand it? Competition is tough, why beat yourself up trying to build bullet-proof vehicles when that's not what the average customer wants?

These are my observations concerning this topic. Auto companies are not building cars/trucks like the used to. This is happening with every make and model. I have a couple of examples that I can share.
Bought a new 92 Nissan Maxima for $24,000. Bought a new 03 Nissan Maxima for $24,0000. Just bought a loaded 12 Maxima SV for $34,0000. Point being, the guy down the street that I sold the 92 Max to is still driving the car. I still own the 03 and I had to replace exhaust, rear calipers, alternator (twice) and cam bearings. All of which I never had to do on the 92. Will have to see how the new Max does.
Now speaking about the 4Runner. Bought my 97 4Runner SR5 new for $31,000. I still have the 3rd gen with now 167,000 miles and still going strong. This past February bought my new 11 4Runner for $31,900. So 15 years later I paid almost the same price for my brand new 4Runner. Toyota has to be making money on these trucks so obviously they must be building them cheaper in order to make profits from these trucks.
So we will have to see if this truck will last 15+ years as well?

When you pay $40k, you only expect a good drivetrain and engine??

Again, your expectations are very low. You deserve more for your money.

Should your seats hold up? Simple thing, right? I mean they're just seats.

Go to Autotrader and pull up a few used 2010-2012 4runner Trails. Do you think the condition of the drivers side seat cushions is acceptable? Perhaps all Trail owners are 500 lbs but i find that doubtful. That's ridiculous. Chevy-like. The seat in an 03 4runner with 135k miles is in far better shape.

Toyota needs to pay attention to this new truck like it did the Camry and step it up inside and out. I sincerely hope they do.

^ dude, I'm not getting into a pissing match with you. You DON'T own a 5 Gen so your experience with them is meaningless. Period.

I'm now going to take the wise advice given before and will ignore your meaningless rants about which you know nothing about.

Cheers and see you on the trails.

See, now I routinely underestimate my fellow T4R'ers; I was sure someone was going to reply back with "only if yo' mamma buys a 4Runner", but no one did.

I applaud the maturity and restraint shown here.

Excellent. Focus that energy on Toyota and hopefully sometime soon they'll give attention to a legendary truck that needs it.

Never meant to upset or butt heads. I'll keep off this forum going forward. Guaranteed.

Costco fees are as low as $55/year. And the majority of people using said membership are buying consumables (grab a dollar slice and sit in the parking lot and marvel at toilet paper in bulk... but don't think too long on that one). And when you do buy something of expense at Costco, they guarantee it, and take care of you (read: let you take it back if it's crap).

You want to point to a retailer who promotes crap, point to Walmart - low prices perpetrated by low wages.

:lmao:

My dads '10 Tundra is holding up fine at 67,000 (alot of highway driving). I agree with westwind77 in that mabey your T4R got jipped in the glue department. Have you tried just glueing the stripping back on. Its probably like a 5 second job. If that doesnt work you could always set the car on fire. :flamethrwoer2:

Reliability? Quality?? I must be misinformed. Was I the only one who bought a 5th gen for its BADASS-ness factor?:uzi:

There are a lot of bad ass trucks out there. The new JGC is an awesome vehicle, and there are some great prices on used LR3s. But reliability was a major factor iny choosing a Toyota. I'm sure most of us considered quality heavily, since that's usually the first thing that comes up in the 4runner vs X arguments.

Quality costs more, plain and simple. Everyone will have their own definition of "quality" but to me quality is a graduated measure vs. cost and quality is a combination of comfort, features and reliability.

If I were looking for a new vehicle priced under 20K I would compare vehicles only under 20K. It would be asinine to think you could buy a vehicle for under 20K with the quality (as defined above) of a 40K vehicle.

Is the 4Runner the best quality vehicle for under 40K? I think that there are more comfortable 40K vehicles out there and to be sure 40K vehicles can be had with more (and better) features and quality components. I also think there are more dependable and reliable 40K vehicles being made today.

When designing something compromises start when the pencil touches paper for the first time. It has to cost "X", or it has to only be "Y" long, or it has to use "Z" parts, etc, and this is dictated by us, the customer. We demand certain features and price points and the OEM gives them to us.

I think the 4Runner is a very good vehicle that meets a shrinking demographic, namely a customer who wants a body on frame 4X4 SUV that can be used both on road and off and perform both tasks well. Oh, and for 40K please thank you very much. Are there cost cutting portions of the 4Runner? You bet. Are there good quality portions too? Sure thing. It is up to you, the consumer to determine if the vehicle that you specc'd out is what you want to drive.

I just rode in a new Land Cruiser this weekend. There is no comparision to our 4Runner and if I wanted to spend 80K on a SUV that is what I would buy. It is quality.

Exactly. These people just want to b*tch.

Really can't understand what all the complaining is about. Those complaining may have a point if they were referring to a $70k+ vehicle, but come on, this is a $40k suv. I have 33k miles on mine with zero problems, not even a rattle (Which is pretty amazing for a truck based vehicle). I have zero problems with the interior, but then again I use a Weather tech mats/Husky liner in the cargo area. The 5th gen is the best vehicle I have ever owned.

Anecdotal reliability data is worthless and will make this discussion go in circles: mine sucks, mine is great, mine sucks, mine is great...

Check info like JD Power and Associates or similar to get less biased assessment than we can give.

Not sure I agree JJ. JDP information is nothing more than information collected from we users - after all, what else can it be? I certainly hope it's not collected from disgruntled 4th Gen owners, or worse, CR.

Methinks I'd rather have info from this Forum than anywhere else. Sure, we're all biased towards the 4R to a degree, but so are most (other) owners to the same degree. At least here, if someone says "this 5th Gen is junk", he'll get pinned down to explain himself.

IMO, we get better real world info here than any other source I can think of.

This one doesn't work for me. I just compared ratings for my old Ford Escape and new 4Runner and I can say for sure that overall quality of Ford Escape wasn't any better than of my 4Runner. I liked my little Escape, but after 2 years it was squeaking quite a bit not mentioning transmission fluid leak. And I didn't go even close to the places I going in T4R. I guess those ratings depends on people expectations. When I buy 4Runner I expect it to be nearly perfect so when we have squeak or slight haze over headlights we go the dealer, register it as a repair and start express our disappointment on forums. If similar issue happens with Ford we just laugh and say well, it's a Ford, what do you expect, I'll buy a new one every 3 years anyway. I'm not saying that we shouldn't fix issues, I'm just saying that ratings do not really reflect reality. Ahh.., you know it already I'm sure : )

heh. Never ceases to amaze me here when forum regulars try to shut down or shut out legitimate complaints or opinions here.

The 4Runner is good, but it's far from great IMO. Like JohnnyT said, there are some here that have lowered their expectations to fit or meet what the 4Runner does fulfill. For the other folks here (myself included)...Using this forum to talk (or b-tch as some have referred to it as...) about the 4Runner's shortcomings is all that we're doing. Please don't take it so personal.
