I lost my man-card today, but...

I got my shaft lubed, got my oil changed (synthetic), got my windows programmed to roll down with the key fob, got a replacement speaker on order to fix a buzz, and I guess I got a free multi-point inspection!

Yep, I spent a good part of the afternoon at the dealership. It cost me $105.12 and my man-card. I whittled away the time sitting in a couple of new 4runners and a Tundra, and bullshitting a couple of pretty nice salespeople.

And for some reason that I can't explain, I thought you all would want to know.

I don't know if going to the Dealership qualifies as losing your Man-Card... being ripped off (depending on the dealer) maybe... now that pink fuzzy steering wheel cover you bought with your wife's credit card to try and sneak it by us? ...Man card permanently revoked.
 
Don't forget the popcorn and free fruit. I get at least $25 worth of that stuff while I wait.

Every time the service advisor comes out and tries to up sell me something I don't need I throw some more fruit in my bag.
 
There is a Toyota dealership in Virginia that actually has a salon in it. At least you didn't report getting a mani-pedi. LOL. Then again, maybe you just didn't tell all.

Glad my 4Runner came with oil changes included.

I know that c-note didn't include the price of the new speaker?

Speaker's being done under warranty. I actually doubt that replacing it will fix the buzz/rattle, but I'll let them try. I think it's probably more an install issue and they just listened to it and didn't bother going into the door.

So, it was about $80 for the oil change and $20 for the lube. I really debated whether to let them do the oil, just deciding on the ride down.

I also bought the two air filters. Changed out the engine's, and found they gave me the wrong cabin filter.

Now here's the sad part. The oil change would have been free, under the two year Toyota Care plan, if I had done it last month. I would have gotten the tire rotation free too. (I declined to pay for that).

I have always been a proponents of doing your own maintenance but I bought the extended warranty that covered service on my 4runner talk them down to $1600 for it. Seemed silly to pass up synthetic oil changes for the next 5 or 6 years whatever it was. Also included coverage for replacement key fobs. I have a kiddo and dogs. I'm sure they will come up missing at some point

A good point to be sure and get your last free oil change before it expires. I hear they are pretty strick about the timing of that expiration. My calendar is marked.
I thought the lube came included with the oil change tho.
 
Looking back , I regret having the dealer change my oil for the 5000 thru 30,000 miles under the 2 year free maintenance program b/c whomever(possibly different guys) worked on my truck in that period to reach 30,000 miles managed to lose several a/o strip my bolts in addition to overtightening the metal drain bolt on the bottom of the oil filter housing canister and not cleaning up the old oil that leaked all over the area that is underneath the oil filter housing canister ; and not bolting the rubber cover piece tucked in properly with respect to the metal cover piece! Shame on me for not checking below when I p/u my truck back then and only discovered all this after I started to do my own oil changes starting at 30,000 miles!

i let the dealer do exactly one of my "free" oil changes; they under-filled it by a full quart, and it was the first and last time i bothered with the "Pre-Paid Maintenance". been doing them myself ever since—takes less time and gets done properly.

unless it's a TSB, most routine maintenance is pretty DIY-able. dealer service is generally earnest and mostly tries to do right, IMHO, but they just can't devote the kind of time and attention to your vehicle that you can and will.

i do shop at the dealer parts counter when it's convenient, though. i've found that, within reason, they're fairly reasonable about discounts when you show them online prices.
 
I have done most of my oil changes in the past on other vehicles and still do on my work truck. But I just don't have time when the runner is available to do it. So I just got mine serviced on Sat also. Got the oil changed, cabin filter, air filter, and tires rotated for $125. I didn't bother with the shaft lube because taking it back in a few days when get the time to have it them look at it for the shaft TSB. Then I will worry about it.
