some had 3.90's
I guess those that came with the 225's from the factory came with 3.91's, but most came with 265/70's (4.10 or 4.30).

you would probably see an increase in mpg with proper gearing, so your 4runner came stock with 225/??/r15 ouch.

Glad someone does...I'd kill for a set of 4.56s or maybe even a set of 4.88s.
Elton, have you confirmed this? I've always been told elocked 3rd gens came with 4.30s.
And Liny, there's no way you have 3.90 gears and 4wd. I've never ever heard of a 4wd 3rd gen w/ any thing less than 4.10s. The only 4Runners that got the 3.90s gears were 2wd models with 225/65 tires.
BTW, a lot of places sell gears online. The Precision brand of gears has always been my favorite. Yukon is good too.

you have 4.30 elockers only came with with 4.30. thats why were confused about elton.

Well I have a 4wd but it came with the 225/75/15's from the factory...so are they 3.90 or 4.10?

Sure there is. My 97 is 4WD and came with 3.90's with the 15 inch rims. Im not sure what tire size was factory since it had 31's on it when we bought it. I now have 33's with factory 4.56's

Are you SURE yours came with 225's? I doubt an 01 came with 15's from the factory. And don't believe the door jamb stickers.
Also, people, just because you've got an elocker, doesn't mean 4.30. Most came with 4.10.

Did you buy it new? How do you know it came stock w/ the smaller tires?
Don't trust that page...I myself have found discrepancies with it when verifying gear ratios for friends of mine.
Well, then you're the first for me. Did you buy your 4Runner new? How do you know it came w/ the 225s...just curious?
Sorry, but not a single '01 or '02 4Runner came with 4.30s...4.10 was the tallest ratio offered for these 2 years.
P nut's right. Don't believe the door jam sticker. ScottyC on YT recently purchased a '00 4Runner and the door jam sticker said he had 4.56s! It was not until he pulled the gearing (to install a set of 5.29s) did he discover he really only had 4.30s.
The best way to know EXACTLY what gearing you have is to pull the gears and count the teeth. However, I've never heard of anyone pull their gears just to find out what gearing they have then reinstall them. The next best solution is the tire/driveshaft rotation method:
Jack up your vehicle so 1 rear tire is off the ground. Put your vehicle in neutral. Mark the drivshaft universal with a felt pen or anything really. Put a mark on the lifted wheel at 12 oclock. Rotate the wheel so the driveshaft turns. Count how many revolutions the driveshaft makes by turning the wheel 1 revolution. If you mark your driveshaft so the mark is at 12 oclock and also the tire marked at 12 oclock. You should be able to determine your gear ratio fairly acurately. Example...If your driveshaft rotates just over 4 revolutions per 1 revolution of the wheel. Its 4.10/1.
