I now have a kick ass raspy sound at WOT but why? :-)

Ok fellas, I'm stumped. I just finished the timing belt project on the V8 and now have a raspy sound coming from the filter box at wide open throttle (WOT). This is a new development for me and I don't care for it. If I wanted to drive a slammed Honda with a K&N, I would've bought one :barf:.

The timing belt project does require you to remove the intake flexible air tube out of the way but that's all! The air filter box wasn't touched for this project. This noise can be made louder by opening up the air filter box and power braking so I know it's NOT an exhaust sound. Besides, nothing was touched on the exhaust system for the timing belt project.

There are two tubes that connect to the air tube and those were re-connected. The engine starts/runs normally, no issues and is super smooth (as always) on the hwy. It's as if I'm running with a conical air filter. If you got any ideas, let me know.

Here's a sound clip: https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=PJu_rIttzcI

The only thing I could guess is that something related to timing has changed. Hard to say if maybe it's a tooth off or a cam phaser is now functioning or it's stuck but if nothing else was changed I'd look there. More importantly, how much HP did you pick up with the new found raspiness?

I don't think my engine has the can phaser due to non vvti. If off by a tooth then it would run poorly, no?

That's right, you have an 03. Maybe take that belt cover off an make sure all the marks still line up. I would think you would get a check engine light at least if the cam timing was off.

Just got home from a long drive into the mountains and my GF and I both agree that the engine doesn't have the torque that it's suppose to. The loud noise is the side effect to something that isn't right in the engine. I'm going to check the timing now to see if that looks ok. Heck, I don't even know how to check the timing on this engine, better read up on it!

I thought maybe the camshaft sensor isn't picking up the signal but that'd trip the CEL I'd think.

She runs smooth just doesn't have the getup and go like she used to.

I checked the ign advance using Techstream and it's advancing the timing appropriately while revving up the engine on the driveway. The more I think about it, the more it leads me to believe that I don't have the cams and the cranks timed correctly. As I'm heading to Death Valley next sat, I have to resolve this so tomorrow after work the timing covers will be removed and see where the timing marks are. That'll be the only way I can answer the timing question. This sucks but it's only few hours of work/re-do. :ybrick:

It'd be nice to know how to check the timing on this engine using a timing light. IF this is possible, someone let me know!

...I don't have an accurate answer for that since I don't think I've used a timing light in a long long while. Haven't ever tried to use one on a coil on plug vehicle (not sure if you can... where would you get Cyl 1 ignition signal for the clamp?) best you can do is pop the top covers off and manually rotate the engine to see where the cam & crank marks fall.

ok, that's what I thought. I'll pop the covers off today and see if I mucked it up!

Update

Well, she is purring like a kitten again. When I did the timing belt, I used the wrong indicator for cam shaft timing. Once this was corrected, she got her power back and no more of that funky sound coming out of the intake.

Even though I read the threads, watched the vids, don't know why I saw what I wanted to see vs what I should've seen when it comes to the timing marks. The downside to re-doing this project was that all of the nice arrows and marks on the timing belt wore off since I've been driving the Runner. But, with some careful tensioning of the belt over the two cam sprockets and tight around the crank sprocket, all is good now.

Don't use the "T"

Do use the "I" mark for camshaft timing mark
