Unless you don't mind MASSIVE body damage, that wouldn't happen. More likely, lots of broken parts if you tried.

I don't understand why you'd think that? They're one of the most reliable vehicles on the road. Up there with the 4Runner, if not better. They were built to be driven off road.

Look at the pic in my avatar. That's not a 5.0 rated trail...it's a 3.5 rated one in AZ. Do you honestly think a FZJ100 series that looked basically stock is going to "outdrive the beat Jeeps" (as Brandon put it) up that rock pile? There's a literal 5' hole on the back of that first rock that your driver side tire has to go over and drop into.


Not saying it can't be done in a 100 series.....I'm saying I'd LOVE to watch someone try it.

I was referring more to the average offroad pickup or jeep you see thats on 33's or 35's. Sure you're saying that's a 3.5 rated trail, but you're doing it in a buggy. Not really a fair comparison. I keep up just fine with the guys who are SAS'd on 35's with my single locked ifs runner on 285's. A dual locked LX470 with plate bumpers, sliders and skids would be an extremely capable vehicle even with only a small lift and 33's.

JFYI...I did that same obstacle 18 years ago in a full bodied Toyota truck on 33's. So it's a pretty solid comparison. Plenty of non-buggy rigs have run that obstacle.

I do agree with you that the size and weight would not be in the 100's favour. But I do stand by the fact that I could outdrive most rigs with a dual locked 100. Many of the pickups and jeeps around here aren't even locked and the drivers are equally incapable so that isn't saying much. Maybe the trails in my parts have more rednecks than yours, but so many people see a 2000+ MY vehicle and for some reason assume that it cant be a capable offroader. The LX470 looks especially soccer mom-ish and would get some double takes for sure.

Just my 2 cents. Having been around 40, 60 and 80 series for the last 20 years. The 100 isn't on the level with those earlier series. Not much ground clearance, and the IFS are severely limiting in comparison to the solid axle rigs. The 100 was not built to be driven off road on the same level. Lockers can transform a vehicle, but you still have to get over obstacles, and that is one of the issues the 4 door JK has with the wheelbase even lifted on 37" tires. No way the 100 series keeps up on big obstacles. And I have been wheeling my 62 for 19 years, I always get body damage where the smaller rigs don't. I had a friend with an 80 that used to shame a lot of people, but even he switched back to a 4runner because that pig was just too damned big. Nice truck though!

My wife wants to switch from a 2008 odyssey to a land cruiser or Lexus 4x4. I want to get an 80 but I think this is where we will end up as she prefers a newer interior.

That's the first statement you made here, and I see no clear qualifying statement.

You were sure to capitalize "massive" and to include "lots" to describe the amount of broken parts I'd experience even attempting to out drive a jeep or pickup truck.
