I think it's about that time... selling, part out?

I'm a bit surprised at myself for even making this thread, but I think it might be time to sell the 4Runner... life has changed a lot in the past year and the rigs been sitting on the back burner not getting as much off-road time as it should.

Trying to decide if I should sell the thing with all the mods and upgrades, or start slowly parting things out.

I'm not really in a rush or hurry to sell, and I feel I would get more back parting it all out, but the lazy in me just wants to find the right buying at a fair price.

I don’t trust KBB for value on 4WD Toyota trucks… private party shows 5-7k for my truck but I know that’s not really representative of what its really selling at. 2004 SR5 4WD, 200k miles… everything works 4WD TC, everything has recently been serviced (all fluids, diffs, trans, coolant) brakes new rotors, front calipers, pads, new SS lines, literally excellent mechanical condition. Its absolutely trail worthy, not to mention upgrades. I pretty much built the truck myself and serviced myself.

It’s not crazy modded, but it has a lot of what you see around here. Can you guys help me figure out where I should be listing this thing?

Here are a few photos to give you an idea of what we are dealing with.

This thing runs absolutely tops... its been a great truck, but I have the itch to move up to something with more luxury and going with a GX would have too much overlap which is what makes this so hard.

Does anything I already have port over to the GX without modification?

That seems like a pretty good deal. Was that for a 4WD?
This was a southern CA truck… no rust and a pretty clean undercarriage minus the trail dirt and dust.

thanks, yes 4x4, it was a pretty good deal on paper. my biggest kicker was undercarriage rust, living in MA where salty winters are tough on undercarriages.
I looked at one that was immaculate outside and rotten underneath. mine is very minimal rust under, no rust or dents on body, and everything works so I am definitelly happy. almost bought one with no rust in maroon the day before for $2k more but it looked tired and faded...crazy how things work out.

I was thinking of something in the low teens 12-14k with mods or is that a bit optimistic? If it is, im absolutely parting out the truck because there is no way I would sell it for 7k

My friend just sold his beat to s*** Tacoma for 13k to a dealer as a trade in eve with KBB showing less than that.

In CA some of these Toyota trucks really go for a premium. Its a little difficult to place it price wise.

I bought my 2005 with 190K several months back, modded, but not as nicely as yours, and also cosmetically challenged some (oxidized paint and some minor dings), for $7,000. I wouldn't let your go for less than $8K.

Id say between 8500 being fair and 9500 reasonable. with or without mods. You will make more if you part out the extra's.

The only things that keep you below 10 are.. its pre late 05'. its an SR5 V6 and 200k. 200k is always going to be 200k to a buyer. even if for these trucks that means very little to something that was well taken care of.

IMO your efforts of keeping it clean and strict on maintenance keep about 2000 worth of value to another wise $6500 to $7500 truck. which is good

I'm in Georgia, so I can't speak to the southern California market specifically.

That said, I just picked up a single owner, no collision, minimal surface rusting Limited V8 4wd for $8,400.

As much as it pains you to do so, you're likely going to need to part it out if you want to get anywhere close to that $12-14,000 range.

No harm in throwing it on Craigslist and putting some feelers out though.

in my experience in the vw, subaru, jeep game...factory options might turn a head, or if you find someone looking to do something similar to your mods, but other than that, aftermarket mods (even as nice as yours) arent going to bring a large demand on the used market. condition seems big for these cars regardless of mods. you might want to just part it. I'd prob look for it around 8500 or pass on it altogether with 200k miles, like the person above me pointed to. dont get me wrong - your truck seems really nice. the mention of 2003-2005 seemed accurate too - theres a different transmission, etc. etc. etc.

Part the easy stuff, like the roof rack if you have the stock one laying around. Otherwise I wouldn't worry about it, you would be paying yourself a low hourly wage with how long it takes to swap back to stock in my opinion. Sell it mostly whole and move on.

I've always thought "who cares about KBB value". Just look at how much they are going for on on Autotrader/similiar because that is usually higher. If they are going for lower on Autotrader you can use the KBB value as a negotiation tool.

I actually have great service records... ill have to make some of that available to the buyer.

There is still a big off-road culture here in So Cal.. San Diego, up the 395 and further north into the state has plenty of BLM land, desert, trails, and state parks.

It's literally what got me into this stuff in the first place. Really hoping that local markets treat me right...

I will most likely throw out a high feeler on craigslist and see what happens... that said I know for a fact if 7k is as good as I can get with the mods, ill keep. It's worth more to me than that... being a single owner / original owner truck, knowing the history and all. A lot of work went into the thing, but I absolutely understand that won't prop up the value either.

What’s funny is that now that I am the one who is selling, you can’t but help feel that your own 4Runner is a bit more special than the next… it’s a little disheartening seeing the prices lol.

Unfortunately your car is going to be worth more to you or the "right buyer" than the average buyer can appreciate. I would throw it on Craigslist for 10,000 and see what happens. What do you have to lose? The fact that it is pre 2006, no leather, 200K + miles, the color, are not working to your advantage but all it takes is the right guy. I would lose the roof rack as it will look more "stock."

It's important to realize you have a 13+ year old vehicle with 200k+ miles. Now how many vehicles exist, that old with that many miles, worth 10 grand?

My 4runner is a 2006 4wd that has been meticulously serviced since the time I bought it off the showroom floor. Has less than 98,000 miles, leather seats, TRD wheels, etc. and KBB tells me it's worth 7000-9500. I guess I might be keeping it for a while LOL. I feel your pain, man.

I hear ya... the color as un-desirable as it is, has absolutely grown on me because it looks at home in the deserts. It's almost like a natural camo. The wife and I call it old man gold... which is fitting since her dad, an old Asian man, was the original owner.

Right buyer is a time honored deal... took me 6 months to sell my Raptor 700 ATV, but I paid $4500 for it, and sold it for the same price 5+ years later only because I found the right buyer.

I was going though maintenance records... I forgot I even did this stuff... so much work has been done to this thing. New serp belt, more misc preventative maintenance items.

Brand new dash install in 2017 by the dealer... AND a brand new OEM windshield. The more I remember whats been done, the more I feel silly about thinking of selling, but the GX bug is pretty strong.

It's about as good as that gets for a 13 year old truck.

Are you sure you want to sell?

Do you really want to sell it? You mentioned wanting or getting a new car? Do you have a replacement yet? Maybe go for a test drive and see if you will like the change.

If you are selling, it seems most of your mods aren't something you'd want to remove to sell and add the stock items back. (rock sliders, 2nd battery, lift, brakes). Other then the roof rack, the mods aren't something that would detract of distract.

That said, I second the idea of posting for 10K and seeing how it goes. Be sure to list out as much detail as you can about maintenance that has been done.

If I was in the market, it would catch my eye. The 200k miles and the color are the only things that would really turn me away. But if someone is looking for a camping and off-road rig, I thinking they'd like it.

Well… this isn’t my only car… I have a few. Selling has more to do with garage space, storage, and overlap. Not wanting to pay insurance / DMV registration. But to answer your question, no, I don’t really want to sell or, or need to sell it, but I think I should sell it. This year felt like I was wasting the truck… years almost up and I don’t think I even put 1000 miles on it.

I stopped daily driving it 2-3 years ago when it became my off-road toy. We built it up because we used to go out to the desert A LOT, off-grid adventure camping, but with my new job and new responsibility the time to do those things have dried up. More friends are having kids too, it becomes harder and harder to schedule trips.

I guess a part of it is I feel like I am a little more conservative as I get “older”… I don’t really get into hardcore crawling and trails with high levels of pucker factor anymore… Mostly just cruise around and enjoy the outdoors, leisure trail, campsite. It’s well within the capability of a GX, which is as every bit as capable as a 4WD 4Runner since it’s pretty much the same/similar truck, with a Lexus twist. Obviously I won’t be beating on it like I do the 4Runner, but I think I’d be OK. City truck with some off-road pedigree gets me pretty excited after I got over the understated looks of the GX 470 / 460. In fact I like the truck very much… my buddy who I off-road with owns one and it’s basically doing the same thing cocooned in luxury.

Lot of the mods I can’t / won’t remove… suspension, brakes, lines, sliders (welded on).. best to sell with the truck. Roof rack and the rims/tires are about the only thing I would really bother parting when I factor in my time too.

I guess 200k sounds like a lot, but really it drives like it’s still a baby. Friends GX has 300k. Another wheeling buddy made it past 350k with the 4.0… This was my first Toyota, I’ve never owned cars that lasted this long before. It’s almost confusing.

I’ll throw it up on Craigslist for MY price… if it doesn’t sell, it doesn’t sell. I realized from this thread that I won’t fire sale this thing that’s for sure. I truly forgot how much work went into this thing over the past 2-3 years... If someone wants to give me my asking price, I’ll move it and upgrade. My worst case scenario is I keep it and enjoy it couple times a year and make it count vs consolidate my commuter sedan and off-road car into a GX where I could save a little money and get pampered a little better.

I own an 07 by art and an 05 TX. Everything ports over 3xc3pt the brakes. Wheels. Tires. Lift. You name it. Not sure about the roof rack but you Mike be able to modify it. The slider might even port over. If I were in your shoes. I would find a stock GX470 and start swapping. And then sell the gold one
