I wish we had tow hooks

Sorry, no, no they don't.
We have tie down loops. These are a welded item and have been discussed in other threads. I personally would not use these as a tow point to jerk someone that is stuck plus they are small. I would prefer a proper tow hook (I smell a mod coming up.)

Ooops, sorry I thought they were hooks the last time I saw them. From the pictures posted and going by memory, they look strong enough to be used. Probably not for extended use but good enough... In the 4 years of ownership, I've never had to use mine.

Why so much negativity about the current/next generation 4Runners? This is probably about the 50th post I've read where you mention that the 4Runner is becoming a grocery-getter.

So what if the rear diff lock is gone....and the ground clearance is a bit lower..... the 4Runner is still leagues ahead of other SUVs when it comes to offroad ability. My friend's Chevy Trailblazer has two nice factory tow hooks up front, but it's a POS when it comes to offroading.

BTW, does the 3rd gen 4Runner have factory tow hooks up front? What about the 1st and 2nd generations? At what point do you think Toyota started building 4Runners that are getting further away from its "offroad roots"?

It is losing some of it's off road ruggedness compared to ealier gens and that's a huge fact and not me being negative but it is a negative for the off road crowd.

Yes,comparing to current other SUVs it's still capable but it's been losing a little each gen since the 3rd gens lost height,5 speed and locker since '01 and I'm mad at Toyota for doing so.

I'm comparing it to it's off road heritage and not worthless crossover SUVs like the Trailblazer but if you never go much beyond a dirt road then why do you care about my comments?

Just wait and see the next gen I bet it'll lose a little more to being a pavement pounder since it doesn't seem Toyota is going to go backward since the FJ is selling so well.

I'd love a 4th gen but it'll cost a bit to lift and lock it. 3rd gens have only one tow hook on the right side and I did state that already.

I'd love to take some 4th gen breathren up on the trails and make a direct comparison to a stock 3rd gen and I'll even throw on the stock size tires and see what each can and can't do. It's not to be a jerk but to show the diffs and see how much a locked 3rd gen can do vs an unlocked 4th. I haven't done a direct comparison and am just going by vids I've seen and chatter from 4th gen owners that have owned 3rd gens.

Don't be mad at my observations and if you can prove me wrong then go ahead.
I'm mad that Toyota has removed some of it's capableness off road since when my 3rd gen is tired I'd love to get a 4th gen but no locker is a bit of a sticking point since that is a costly upgrade and still should be an option on the 4th gens since it's available on the FJs.

Here's JA'S stock 4th gen nose to nose with his '99 (on 265/75s) and you can see the approach angle and height is a fair amount different but he fixed that with a lift.

http://www.top4runners.com/cgi-bin/image.pl?/ja/2007/lift/before_front.jpg

And lifted with tires which makes a huge diff and gets it up to his 3rd gen
http://www.top4runners.com/cgi-bin/image.pl?/ja/2007/lift/after_front.jpg

4th gens also got wider to facilitate more people and comfort and it is loads more comfortable and rides much better on long trips than my 3rd gen and the 50 extra horses helps with road driving and towing and get the same MPG or even more than my '99.

RonM, but JA's '99 4runner had 32 in. off-road tires while his 4th gen (in pic) had stock OEM tires. Hardly fair comparison!

RonM...i want to hear your thoughts on a post i posted earlier in the link above:

RonMAIDEN, not trying to discredit your 3rd gen, i am trying to be fair on all sides.

What are your issues?? The lack of rear locker?? The lower front clearance?? Size??

Well, 4th gens have ATRAC, which works on ALL 4 wheels. Your 4runner has a rear locker only, which is an excellent tool to have off-road, but your front diff is still open. Therefore, the advantage of a rear locker vs. ATRAC on all 4 wheels is present over some terrain but it's not like a big big gap in capability.

Since the 4th gens come with ATRAC, it has a superior ABS system, 4-channel vs. your 3-channel. Thus, on-road safety and arguably off-road braking are improved. And as you know, on-road handling and safety on the 4th gen far exceed that of 3rd gen, esp. with stability control, better crash testings, and available airbags everywhere.

The front clearance is a real issue on 4th gen. But this "mishap" is easily fixable with a mild lift up front (1" spacer or such). But, if you're comparing stock vs. stock, then you're right about this.

As for size, i don't think that the 4runner is any bigger than your average midsize SUV. The 3rd gen was too darn narrow for a midsize SUV...thus, it makes the 4th gen look like a pig in comparison. I am sure that 4th gens will fit into all the Colorado trails with only a bit more brush rash than a 3rd gen. Not a big deal...it comes with the sport.

And as stated in the link above, if i were to play in mud or do water fording, then i much prefer the 4th gen over 3rd gen. I did not like drum brakes on my 3rd gen. Sure, it is low maintenance...if you never take it off-road. In mud, i definitely prefer all-around disc brakes. And yes, you can clean it out (like what RonM has been doing every 6 months), but eventually, rust will get you.

And if i remember correctly, the 4th gen 4runner can do a bit more side slope and hill gradient than a 3rd gen. This should provide a bit more stability off-road.

As for the 4runner being "too nice," i am not sure if this is an argument at all. Can't handle mud in the interior as well??? Huh? If a person has the balls to wheel a 4runner, then it's going to be a dirty affair in ANY 4runner. You can't blame Toyota or 4th gen for being more civilized! The 3rd gens were not exactly luxurious in anybody's mind. And although the cargo volume was impressive (due mostly to height of cabin rather than width), the passenger space was rather tight (very narrow). The competition was catching up earlier this decade...and Toyota needed a roomier and more comfy SUV. I do feel that the interior quality of material did go down a bit with the 4th gen. The 3rd gen material quality was very impressive...you can't find a poor quality plastic anywhere. But, you have to see where Toyota had to make some compromise while making a better vehicle overall.

In conclusion, a 4th gen off-road capability can be easily improved upon cheaply to match any 3rd gen 4runner. However, the opposite cannot be said about modifying a 3rd gen to be as safe, comfy, and roomy as a 4th gen.

As for manual vs. auto OFF-ROAD, it is still highly debatable about which is better...each has its plus and minus. You should know that since you off-road.

Falls, i am continually confused by your comments about your next SUV.... You hate for the 4runner to be more "mall-friendly," yet you have your heart set on a Tahoe?! At what point did you think the 4runner will ever be less capable than a Tahoe??? You complained about your 4runner being too low and "too narrow" (????), yet the Tahoe is even lower (by a lot!) and is too damn wide for most trails! Oh yeah, it has the same electronics as4runner too! You're like a bag of contradiction! :D

I know the Tahoe (new style) is a front air damn snow plow , I just like the bigger size and like I mentioned before the main reason I was looking at it was to be able to take my dad places who is 6 11 and 320lbs. AND yes I already did by a Tahoe already ! it's a 2000 w/90k miles , good shape , 4x4 , LT , he's comfortable in it and can drive in it way more comfortable than the Trailblazer that my mom drives. I bought it cheap and it works well for it's intended purpose . Would I take the thing off road instead of the 4R , NO I would not take it off road , its a boat but rides nice for him , not why I bought it anyway. I must admit you kinda for get how good the 4R handle and is until you get into and start driving a boat like that.

By to low and to narrow , I should explain better , the width and stance of the Tacoma would be just fine . Well at least it looks higher and wider , not sure of spec's .

As far as my contradiction ........ all depends how pissed off at my sqeeky brakes on my 4R at the time ....lol :D

I'm just an old school guy and sometime hard for me to adapt to new technology 4x4's . I've had about 15 4x4's since I started driving , this 4R has the most technology . Yes it handles great and is the most solid feeling truck/suv I've had so far.

As far as a mall queen , I think the new crossovers are taking that position. I just basically hope the 4R stays truck based.

Maybe I should buy a real truck like the Ridgeline:D

OK , back to the orig. discussion since I was so rudely interrupted by Thai:D .....just kiddin man .

Put it this way , would any of you hesitate to pull someone out of a ditch with the loops on the front or back of the 4R ??????

I've pulled out stumps and bushes with both front and rear but a car or truck or Suv maybe a different story.

IMO a stock 3rd gen with the optional rear locker could spank a stock 4th gen.

It could under certain conditions, and not in others. For example, crossing water favors the 4th gen. Running up a rock ledge probably favors the 3rd gen due to the rear locker. However, to have a rear locker means that you do not have ATRAC (prior to 2000). At the same time, you can add ARB rear locker to a 4th gen and it will spank a 3rd gen with rear locker due to ATRAC + ARB locker combo. As stated above, it's easier to make a 4th gen as capable (or more) than 3rd gen, but it's impossible to make a 3rd gen as good all-around as 4th gen.

A simple 1" spacer lift puts the nose back where it should be....which is where it was on the 3rd gen 4Runner. The pictures RonMAIDEN posted weren't exactly apples to apples. In the first picture, the 4th gen is bone stock right down to its tires, but it appears that the 3rd gen is sitting on larger-than-stock tires. Plus, the next picture shows the 4th gen lifted, and it is clearly higher than the 3rd gen, not even as he stated.

Yes, the locking rear diff is nice, but I'd rather have the 4th gen ATRAC if I had my choice of one or the other. Luckily for the FJ Cruiser guys, now they have both!

The same thing could be said about your 3rd gen, simply because it is IFS. Lots of hardcore wheelers want solid front axles.

The Trailblazer is not a crossover by any sense of the word. It's a full frame RWD chassis, just like the 4Runner. And about your comments.....they just seem to be very negative when it comes to any 4Runner built after 2001. Based on your own comments, the 4th gen 4Runner isn't even in the same league as the 3rd gen, which I think it completely wrong.

Just wait and see the next gen I bet it'll lose a little more to being a pavement pounder since it doesn't seem Toyota is going to go backward since the FJ is selling so well.

It might lose a little more, but who knows for sure? Maybe not, because they already have the Highlander, which has moved up in size and gives people want they want in a street biased SUV.

Too bad you're so far away because I'd love to take you up on that. I have a 1" front lift, so it might not be the comparison you're looking for, but I'd like to see how your rear locker compares when driving up a steep, snowy offroad trail.

Don't be mad at my observations and if you can prove me wrong then go ahead.

I'm not mad....I'm just getting tired of reading all of your anti-4th gen posts. You seem take every opportunity to bash the 4th gen that you can, calling it less capable. Maybe you should prove that your 3rd gen is considerably better than a 4th gen 4Runner before you keep talking smack, because at this point, it's nothing but opinions. And you know what they say about opinions, right?

I think his suggestions are pretty moot. They call it a 4th gen because it's an updated version of the 4runner, with all of the improvements that they could think of, compared to the 3rd gen. The 5th gens will most likely be considerably better than the 4th gens. It's just obvious and common sense.

The only thing that 3rd gens have on 4th gens is slightly higher clearance, which can be fixed with a $200 lift. And they are skinnier for easier offroading. But maybe people view skinny as "scrawny."

I would preferably like to drive a tougher, stronger, faster, and better looking vehicle. That's why I bought a 4th gen over a 3rd gen. However I do have immense amounts of respect for some 3rd gen owners on this forum.

LMAO, look at Steven going off on someone else yet again. Ever thought that maybe you take this message board thing a little too seriously?

Although many arguments are completely pointless, I have to take his side on this one. RonMaiden does get a little excited about 3rd gens vs 4th gens. I have seen it happen in numerous other threads.

Is this thread about tow hooks or a 3rd vs. 4th gen discussion;):

My thoughts are similar to Thai's...the 4th gen can be modded to be as good and probably better than a 3rd gen. Sure you need to upgrade the tires, lift, lock and armor it. But 3rd gen guys who hard core off-road dont leave the vehicle stock anyway. Those of us who frequent a dedicated 4Runner forum are enthusiasts and enthusiasts tend to mod regardless of factory capababilities.

One good thing about the 4th gens being lower is that when you lift it it becomes different than every other stock 4R out there. It sets it apart. If you lock the rear and front diffs, which can and has been done, forget about it.

Also, a 1" front spacer is (barely) enough to make a 4th gen the same height as a 3rd gen. only if the comparison is between a 4th gen and a non 1999 3rd gen. 99's are typically 1" higher than the other years, so a 2" spacer is more in order.

I do agree though that the 5th gen will probably loose a little more factory off-road capability to the 4th gens while still being leaps and bounds above the the competition.

Exactly. Hardcore off-roaders don't leave their vehicles stock, regardless of make/model or year. A stock-to-stock comparison means nothing once the first mod is installed, but it is still somewhat interesting to compare capabilities when stock.

I did not know that the 3rd gen 4Runners were lower after 1999. So using RonMAIDEN's logic, the 4Runner lost some capability in the 3rd generation, before the 4th generation even existed! Wow, that surely must have annoyed him, but I haven't seen him complaining about that!

BTW, my sister-in-law owns a nice bone stock 3rd gen Limited. I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's a 2001. I've parked in her driveway several times next to her. I'll have to take a comparison picture of our 4Runners nose to nose to see how my 1" lift looks next to her stock height 4Runner.

I think that RonM has a '99 4runner. I also think that 1996-1999 are high, not just 1999.

Thai said:

I realized that and edited my post. My intention was to show that the post 99 4Runner lost some capability, not to pick on RonMAIDEN's 4Runner.
