Icon coil-over odd groove/thread marks

These icons probably have about 200 miles on them and i can't figure how in the world it would have gotten these groove marks that look like screw threads. I adjusted them on Saturday, and drove it to today running errands and tonight noticed them? They are deep enough to catch you finger nail.

Any ideas?

They are on 2003 V8 4x4 4runner.

Click the image and look at the first coil under the upper A arm.

Edit: They are rubbing on the inside of the upper control arm when I'm adjusting them so at full droop! Is that normal, both side are doing it?

Put the front end up in the air by the frame high enough that the wheel is just off the ground (tire is at full droop). Then slide a jack under the tire and raise the wheel to full stuff and see where it rubs.

Well now you know where they rub. Should they be rubbing, I wouldn't think so.
Maybe they aren't seated properly, or maybe you need to do some grinding where they rub to eliminate the problem (that's what I'd probably end up doing)

What gen 4Runner? Post a couple pics of your lower strut mounts. Specifically the spacers on either side and show which is front.

The long spacer is towards the front of the vehicle per the instructions, to give it room for the sway bar. Been speaking with ICON today, it's looks like maybe they sent me the extended travel shocks. I sent them pix i posted above, they are working with me and hopefully we can work something out because these are now prematurely damaged/worn.

BTW it's 4th gen.

That's what I was going to look for.

Saw These UCA's in their scratch and dent sale section, maybe these would make you a happy Icon customer again (if ya know what I mean) ;):. Not only will they clear the spring but also would allow you to enjoy the full benefit of the extended travel strut :thumb3:

Wouldn't hurt to ask and since they are a sale item it might be easier for Icon to agree.

It's been my experience, although limited, that the "scratch and dent" items are indiscernible from the new.

Good luck!

Booo - they want me to physically rotate the coil, within the assembly so that the coil spring spins into a new position and clears the A-arm. They said it's really hard to do but can be done. I don't get it, shouldn't this stuff be bolt on?

I don't see how that's going to help, the A arm will just scratch up the other side of the spring. If they mean so that the arm falls to a section between coils how you gonna do that? Take it out, rotate, reinstall, try it, repeat till you get it just right? Thats BS!

Tell them to either send you the correct struts you ordered or a set of arms that clear the spring.

As I sit here telling you to argue with these guys I'm wondering...Did you order the extended travel struts or did they send you the wrong part??

I agree, it should be that hard, and oddley enough they said it happens. They show that I ordered normal travel shocks and are saying they sent me normal travel. Keep you posted.

I have ICON extended travel C/O's and ICON billet UCA's and I can tell you that if you adjust the ride height at full droop, you will rub the spring against the UCA. I can imagine it really rubbing if it was with the stock UCA. The damage on the springs are from them rotating in the bucket and scraping the inner part of the UCA. Don't raise your front end to full droop when adjusting. Let it down about an inch or so from full droop then turn the adjustment collar.

The damage you have on your springs are just cosmetic and won't affect the life or performance a bit. Just touch it up with some stain black paint.

That's the "rub" (pun intended) is that I didn't order extended travel C/O's and they said it's a very very very rare instance that the normal travel rub on the UCA, which could be fixed by rotating the coil blah blah... So a good discount and a couple hundred dollars later and I have some tubular ICON UCA's ordered.

They were very clear about all the R&D etc...and they are designed not rub etc...They ask me several times, to make sure I was doing it as the instructions say, which is adjust at full droop.

Hopefully this will get me in the "clear" and yes I could adjust slightly under full droop but sucks when you paid $1K+ for products that should work without additional mods.

I would be super pissed it I had order the the extended travel and billet UCA's to find out they rub.

If it makes you feel better, the same thing happened to me. Ordered standard length C/O's and got extended length. The receipt and the part# was correct for standard length but when I gave them the measurements they confirmed I had extended length. They Next Day shipped billet UCA's to be at a very discounted rate (they didn't make tubular UCA's back then).

The suspension has been working flawlessly and I couldn't be happier. Icons customer service was exceptional. Glad it worked out for you and you came out ahead. Plus it's better having the new UCA's for travel, clearance and alignment purposes.:-)

Well that's one to get us into their UCA's since there is no price difference between their ext. travel and normal travel C/O, they send you ext.travel shocks and sell you the UCA's at a discount.

As for how they work, they are the best suspension Ive ever had.

As a side note I purchased them from wheelers.
