Just so you have a visual with Pro versus a 3" lift.
Cruising the mall again with that Limited eh?

Please tell me you left him a note about those ridiculous steps and "bullbar".
I need that bumper.
Something to think about when I get back to CO.
And seriously, brush bar? On a PRO?
BAN HIM!

HELL YEA! No contest there son!.... and ya'll question WHY I wanna jack up my new rig...I feel my ego welling up.
I took my Pro out and tested the highly ‘Tuned Billsteins’ at HFAP & the dunes at San Luis Pass; and was not entirely impressed. The FJ w/a stage 5 handles that ish 100x better. So Monday the Pro is getting a new suspension put on, 52800 rear springs, 58647 Extended Travel Fronts, 57810 Remote Res. Rears, Uniball UCA’s, and New upper & lower rear Links.
This is my first 4 Runner, so I have nothing to compare it against, but I like the looks & space of the Pro, and we needed something bigger for the family & dogs (8 y/o girl that loves to fish and 2 Huskies that go everywhere w/us) and the FJ is getting too small & the Tundra gets crappy mileage.
So upgrading the suspension seems like the thing to do, never have been impressed w/Billstein; and several people that I know that run them love ‘em; same with Icon, either you love them or hate them.
So moral of the story is don't get the TRD Pro. You'll end up paying MSRP (or more) and throwing out that "awesome" suspension it has for something more costly.
Not really; we priced ’15 Limited’s & Trail Premium Editions with the same ‘accessories' as the TRD and they came out 1.5K-2K higher than what we paid for the TRD Pro ($42,410 off the lot, including 7yr/100K Warranty, Service, Paint, Glass/Tire/Rim repair). I just happen to be in a position where i can afford to ’throw away’ the suspension….I’m retired and have a second career, w/a wife that works and zero bills. Plus selling the Bilstein’s helps fund the new Icons…..
So for what everyone else is paying for a ‘Stock’ 4 Runner I got a somewhat limited edition 4 Runner. Does it have its' faults? Yup. But so did the FJ. I got rid of the crappy stock stuff on that too, and spent a few bucks on new bumpers, tires, suspension (Pro Comp then Icon) Tires, Air Filters, etc, etc.
My thoughts are people are gonna hate on the TRD Pro’s just because they can. I personally love mine, the interior is sweet, the exterior is one of kind, it turns heads wherever it goes, I’m always being stopped and asked what kind of 4 Runner it is, I happen to like it, a lot.
To each his own. I’ve lurked around here for quite some time reading builds and replies about Pro's and what other 4 Runner owners think of them, and it seems that Pro owners get the shaft. Honestly, its another 4 Runner, that’s priced the same as a Limited or even a Trail Premium Edition…...
The ICONS ride really well but if you live in an environment that sees salty roads often or a good deal of dirt\mud the icons have one major drawback. The lower bearing wears out & begins to squeak like crazy with a bit of suspension movement.
So, be prepared to break the suspension down and rebuild the shocks. If you can do this yourself great but if not you will have to find a local shop capable of the rebuild or send them back to Icon. The bearing replacement is easy but while everything is out why not do a full rebuild as well? If you have the fluids, tools, parts and equipment it's not a big deal either. However, If it's a daily driver this can become a major hassle. I got tired of the once a year tear down process and went for longevity.
I’ve had them on my FJ for a few years, and haven’t had the slightest bit of trouble. Even with the upper & lower rear links, I just keep them greased, and hit the shock mounts with some PB Blaster after a hard wheeling trip.
Of course ‘Bevo doesn’t see too many miles, he’s got 60K on him and he’s 7 y/o and spends a lot time indoors. Plus Texas doesn’t use salt or anything harsh on the roads, and anytime we hit the beach, we hit the carwash w/in 24 hours……
My shocks have never been back to Icon for a re-build or service yet in 3+ years and 20,000 or so miles….Maybe I need to call Todd and see if they should be sent in…..:fear:
I would have bought a Trail and got Chas at TotalAutomotivePerformance to hook you up with an unbeatable discount on an ICON stage 2 kit. Out the door on that is less than a TRD PRO including CA sales tax on the truck.
But in all seriousness if you're getting a TRD Pro I would not upgrade the suspension unless you needed something much more serious for off-roading. One of, if not the biggest reason for buying the TRD in the first place is the upgraded suspension over a Trail. And since you're not planning on "seeing the dirt" then I sort of question your thinking in buying the TRD to begin with, let alone an ICON stage 4....
But if you were to upgrade to ICON, I can personally recommend Stage 2 as thats what I have on my Trail.
IMHO, If you want the best on-road and off-road suspension then I can absolutely suggest ICON. Stage 2 is the best bang for your buck because you get an extra inch of travel over stage 1. Remote Reservoirs are really only needed for high speed desert stuff, and most of the time the standard 2.0 rear and 2.5 front coil-overs and plenty. Hit up Chas at TotalAutomotivePerformance if you decide to upgrade, he can hook you up with the best discounts and pricing.
I’ll agree with pretty much everything you say…Except for the Chas part. If you do order from Total Automotive, call Rich directly. Chas is a scammer; that douche-canoe never turned in my order even though I paid him and if I hadn’t called the office directly and talked to Rich (after a month of Chas assuring me that HE was personally looking into my order) I just might be sitting here waiting on my stuff. Even though he was telling his boss that he was taking care of it, he never could produce a Purchase Order, even when I asked repeatedly for one; it was only after I told him & e-mailed the Customer Service link that I was disputing the Pay-Pal charge that the ball got rolling. It’s funny that no-one else at T.A.P. knew about my order except for Chas….a $3,000 Icon order that I was being told that the parts weren’t available; But when you can call Todd at Icon directly and inquire about 52800 Springs and 57810C Shocks that were in the warehouse, well then you get a little skeptical…..So just a little background on Chas, he’s done not just me dirty, but a few others also. Beware.
