Icon Shock Service Questions

Has anyone sent their shocks to Icon for service? I dont have the skills or tools to remove them myself so how do I go about this? Take it to my dealership or a local service shop and ask them to remove and ship? I dont need them serviced yet but the time will come soon enough.
Thanks,

Yep, that's what you do. I bought an eBay spacer kit to run on the stock coilover for the downtime so I could still drive the truck. Icon does rebuilds on Tuesdays so shoot to have them arrive there on a Monday so you minimize the turnaround.

With KDSS, it's a real PITA.

I agree. Also why I didn't want KDSS although when we get our GX it will have it. But it will be kept all stock.

But still take the time to learn, you can spend the cost of replacement a couple times with paying people to install and uninstall for rebuilds. That's not even if one develops a leak or problem and needs serviced.

So, so since I can drive it without a spacer kit it will need to stay at the shop until the parts come back.... wonder if my dealership would do that:redbrick:

I doubt it cause you wouldn't be able to move it and would take up one of their bays.

Might ask though...

I'd love to have rebuildable coilovers, but this issue was my main reason for not getting them.

Good luck with trying to get them to allow you to tie up one of their lift bays for that amount of time. Maybe it would be cheaper to have someone come over and help you take it apart in your own driveway/garage? Then send them out for service on your own time?

Yeah, I think it sounds like this is what I will have to do. At least I could learn that way.

Thanks everyone.

I'll be honest, I really thing you can probably do this yourself if you have the ability to read and have access to a few basic tools, lol. Check out this thread in case you might be up for trying to tackle this on your own: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/154230-how-lift-installation-kdss-equipped-vehicles.html

Use your imagination where applicable, but it should be even easier than in my thread because you will be removing the entire front coilover as a whole :)

How do you guys separate the tie rod from the steering knuckle without damaging it? Is there a puller tool that works really well? I have a pickle fork but that will screw up the boot. On some cars I just unscrew the castle nut, flip it, and hit it with a dead blow and it separated but that didn't work. I just left the tie rod attached, counted threads showing, unscrewed it from the steering rack, and rotated it out of the way. Works fine but takes a whole lot longer and has he potential to f up the alignment.

No need to separate the tie rods, just disconnect the upper control arm, loosen the LCA bolts and you'll have tons of room.

Just isntalled my lift a couple weeks ago and since it did not come out I left it and worked around. Was really not in the way as said before when I disconnected the UCA that gave me all the room I needed to remove and install the new stuff.
