Icon shock wraps

Anyone using these Icon neoprene shock wraps?.

When I bought my C/O's I passed on the Extreme Weather Plating Option offered by Icon and here in the northeast they use lots of chemicals/salt on the roads in the winter. I have been spraying the C/O's with a coating of WD40 to help with keeping the crud off but would like something a little more permanent to protect them from the elements.

Thoughts/opinions??

this reminds me of the shock boots they make for mountain bike forks.

The consumer immediately thinks, "wow, these will keep all the crud away from my shock."

The mechanic thinks the exact opposite, that those boots keep all the crud INSIDE the boot near the shocks.

Personally, i'd leave them bare, and just try to give them some attention(cleaning/lubing) every once in awhile.

Seriously, it's pricey but if I hadn't gone with the severe weather option I might consider something like that with all the MagClor they use around the front range area.

These will just keep all the crap inside. That's exactly what shock boots do on bikes. I work with bikes everyday and trust me this is what their for. It's purely a gimmick. You think it protects but it really doesn't.

agree with RiDE, i would avoid these as it'll just help to keep moisture and crud inside the shocks.

Yeah, agreed with everyone. They just store muck and even worse let it rub on the shock shaft, further eroding performance. They are popular on dirt bikes too and it's the same, just a gimmick.

The difference is that these cover the entire spring / etc. What you guys are thinking of, are the rubber boots that go over JUST the stanchions. I'm going to guess these have a drain hole at the bottom. I still would have gone for the coated metal.... and probably not run these...

I have boots on my rear shocks, my mechanic recommended having it in to keep things clean. He threw them in for free. So should I cut them out?

Thanks guys you all pretty much confirmed what I was thinking. I wish there was a stocking dealer near me for Icon as I'd still like to actually see and hold them to confirm my thoughts. For now I guess I'll just keep a good coating of spray lube on them.

It seems the consensus here is not to use boots so :shrug:. I have to go see my mechanic bro-in-law tomorrow to get my air bags installed, not gonna do them on my back in the driveway :nono:, I'll run the boot issue by him and his guys and see what they all think. Will report back!

Hey Billy any update on the shock boots? I'm assuming you haven't gone with these yet. I too was looking at possibly picking these up but have the same concerns you do. All my Icon components are sitting in my garage right now waiting for a couple buddies to come over and give me a hand with the install. But looks like late January I should have everything on! The wait is killing me!!

I agree with what one person said in that it does go around the spring and not just on the shock shaft. These would actually be a good idea for people in SEVERE conditions.

I come from the mountain bike world and remember the stanchion boots which were crap and a gimmick.

Now if the sock were to just go around the shock shaft I would pass because then it is keeping the crud inside against the shaft. But these, ehhhh, but not at that price.

i'm using a pair of wraps on the coilovers and couldn't be happier.there are 2 1/2'' of overly salted slush on the road.i have been driving around all day,when i got home i checked. the cover itself was soak and wet on the outside as well as everything in the wheel well and under the car.i opened the wraps to see how it was inside to find the coils and the body of the shock and the shaft were dry even the inside of the wraps was dry.i don't know how they would do if sumerge in muddy water with stoff in it but if you want to protect from snowy salty condition they do

I have been mountain biking for over 15 years now. Shock wraps, rubber booties, skins, etc. trap water and crud against the shock and work it into a fine grinding paste.

You guys up North in the snow and slush ever use Boeshield to clean and protect stuff? Just curious. We used it on a boat and trailer that was used in salt water and it protected fairly well.
