Pretty easy to steal a 3" antenna - you can put it in your pocket as opposed to walking around town carrying a long aerial. That's what I was referring to.
Ideas for a shorter antenna?

has anyone else seen any differences in reception with the 3 inch compared to the 5 inch antenna? debating on which one to get.

i have the 3in on mine but i''m in a pretty podunk area of florida and the reception is noticeably worse from the factory antenna. Luckily i have a few more days until my xm expires so its not really a problem, however until they offer me something less than 12/mo for a subscription i'lll probably be putting back on my oem antenna because the 3in is just not cutting it. Let me know how the 5in works....

I renewed my XM for $9.99/month (comes out to around $11.50 per month once you pay the lousy royalty fees) for the Mostly Music package. I've heard that if you let it expire, XM will continuously call you to get you to activate. Also, my sister told me they starting offering packages that were lower in price (like 5.99/6.99 per month). You could try that strategy, but there was no way I was going to wait to renew mine because I wouldn't be able to live without Hair Nation (XM 41)!
I'll be installing my 3" Mangowalk today. I have to admit that, while I don't like the idea of likely reduced reception, XM radio will probably make it a moot point. Between the XM and my ipod, I haven't really listened to local radio. The 4Runner has been my first intro to satellite radio. I had always poo-pooed the idea of paying for radio, but I will ponying up for a subscription once my trial period expires.

yea i completely concur between the ipod and xm the regular radio has really not been used at all and to be honest i haven't been using my ipod either. I had another buddy tell me the same thing that he let it expire and they kept bugging him and he kept rejecting their offers until finally he got it down to like 6/mo which is what i consider to be more worthy. Until that happens i have no problem with my ipod...
Well, got the 3" inch stubby on and, for me, there was a significant loss in reception. One half of all the FM stations that I had preset on the 4Runner could not be picked up with the Mangowalk. Again, I live in a desert area where the largest radio market lies about 30 miles away, but I can regularly get distant stations located 90-100 miles away. I lost all of the distant stations with the Mangowalk and a good number of the local ones. A taller antenna would probably work much better, but a this point, I'll probably stick with the stock antenna.

have you swapped your antenna out? looks like i'll be holding off with the Mangowalk, but I do live in the OC/LA area so it might work better than what others are reporting. anyone from SoCal here that has the 3" stubby?

Just put mine on a couple of hours ago! Thank god Autozone had the threading stud we need... 
My reception is fine, I really can't tell a difference at all. I still get the 2 or 3 radio stations that I usually listen to so I'm happy. Also, I'm REALLY glad I got the 5" and not the 3". I think the 3" would have looked too dinky on this beautiful rig.

I'll try to keep this simple..
Ordered the 3" Mangowalk and got the 6.00$ kit from Autozone...and that was ok..
While at the Autozone I see this 10$ Pilot 5-6" Ant....nice looking, silver and black, so I pick it up...and that was ok...
so get home to the driveway...tune in a NYC AM radio station about 60 miles away..and start changing the antennas....and that was ok
Mangowalk...loses the signal unless I'm touching it..same with the Pilot
Screw the OEM back on and back to the drawing board..

I tried a couple of different antennas from Schucks (now O'Reilly's), but none of them fit right even though they all had the right adapter; they all left a gap.
After putting the stock one back on it dawned on me that this thing rises about 3 inches taller than the roof rack and gives me a quick and easy way to check overhead clearance.
And it has the added benefit of allowing me to tune in radio broadcasts from Mars.:trophy:

I got the 5" and unless I'm touching it the reception is pretty poor on 3 out of the 6 channels I have stored, I'm going to try the 7" mangowalk and see if thats better, I'll let you know how it works for me. I hate the stock antenna tho it pings off my garage door everytime i go in and out.
I have my ipod set up with music in 'playlists' and when i plug it into the usb it connects but the music wont come up. Is there a certain way we are supposed to format or put our music in the ipod so it syncs to the screen?

Hey guy's if you don't mind a black or painted plug in the removed antenna hole...or some body work and paint will fix also. Then I would recomend going with the antenna that is built into the windshield. Not cheap or an easy way out but if you want a true smooth "mastless" (is that a word?) style it is an option.
