That really sucks, it is sometimes hard to believe that someone could be so malicious to a person they don't even know.

But as far as the damages go I might have a solution for the gas tank. You and some others might already know this, but if you use Ivory soap you can close up a gas leak. I have never had to use it but I have heard that it does the trick in a pinch.

I hope you reported the incident to the local police - stealing gas is one thing, cutting brake lines is in a whole different league - idiots like that need to be stopped before somebody gets hurt.

Popping a hole in the gas tank was a favorite a couple of years ago when gas prices were last this high - became common after every manufacturer fitted anti-siphon devices on the fill pipe. Sadly gas tanks are often made of plastic nowadays so there's little chance of one of these idiots creating a spark when they do it and blowing themselves into the Darwin awards.

Well.....after a nice kayaking ride today, I was pulling my boat out of the river and my friend noticed a truck pull away quickly that was parked by mine (we were the only one's on the river). When we got to my car, the gas door was open and the cap was off.....I thought, great....they were trying to steal my gas. When I started the car, several lights went off (ABS, traction control, brake), but the car ran fine for about a mile and I needed to get back to cell coverage....then the buzz sound started and the power brakes went out. I pulled over and got under the car, it was leaking gas out of the bottom of the tank. Apparently that was the best way to steal my gas was to put a hole in the bottom of the tank. The gas was leaking slowing, I couldn't imagine how long it would take to get a gallon. So the 100 mile tow ride was great, thanks rural Indiana for making my kayak ride so memorable.

I'd be willing to bet these were some meth heads or some other drug user.s There are so many scumbags that try to ruin this world for the rest of us law abiding citizens! I'm glad the dealership patched the tank rather than trying to make you replace the tank. I imagine that would have been expensive and might have then involved your insurance. I'm assuming that you didn't get these guys tag number or anything?

As far as using ivory soap to patch a gas tank, I'd have to be in the middle of no where and in danger to do that. I would not want something to get sucked in by the fuel pump and cost a whole lot more money. However, in certain situations you have to do what ever is necessary so I appreciate the tip.

I'm hoping to get my truck back on Friday, they didn't patch the tank, they replaced it and yes I had to call my insurance. The total bill was about $1000 plus $300 for the tow.....I had to pay $100 deductible, so it wasn't that bad.

Since I was out in the middle of no where, I kind of ruled out crazy women....I think. I'm sure it was some Meth Heads, they are all over this area.

Well I just got back from the dealership......they cut one of the brake lines.

I'm pissed, because this whole time, I thought there were only people in a 30 mile radius that wanted to kill me......not a 100 mile radius.

I think I'm dealing with the same blotched attempt to steal gas. About 4 days ago we all noticed the smell of gas, and the truck was hard to start first start of the day only. Today the tank just started spraying gas, leaking behind the rear passenger wheel. GOing to have to look into it, but it seems the oddest place to get a leak.

I forgot to mention, because of the production issues in Japan, I'm told.....zero new tanks are available in the US. They said about 2 weeks and the cost is $700+

get a fuel cell! I think the 22 gallon fuel safe's run ~ $550, if you can find one that will fit in the stock location. I'd consider all alternatives vs. $700...

Sh.t sucks. Last time I went on vacation someone pried my gas tank open, scarring the sh!t out my my tank and side of my bed. Then they couldn't get any gas out. They drilled like 6 holes on my gas tank itself! Then! Tried taking the tank itself. Guessing they only got half a gallon of gas since the car port was covered in dried gas. I hate people
