If this is true, then this 4R will be my last Toyota

I would be upset if Toyota actually had such a design that would prevent a third party from relearning the new TPMS. I have seen other manufacturers do this, Apple being the worst. When the first Ipod came out, my boss bought me one. It was nice until I discovered that in order to charge it, you need to keep the computer on. Apples went out of its way to implement a design that reads whether the computer is turn on. If it is not, the Ipod will not charge. And guess what? The device doesn't come with a charger. You have to buy a wall charger separately. I have very little tolerance for BS like this. Since then I have never touched another Apple device and life is good. Your mileage may vary. Do what you want with your money and time.

Hmm. Was yours a Windows computer? I have to admit I have fully drank the Apple Koolaid. My iProducts charge fine on my MacBook whether it's on or asleep. The USB ports stay hot unless I specifically shut it down. Maybe your computer's USB ports shut down when it's asleep? And every iPod, iPad, and iPhone I have ever bought had a wall charger included (even the tiny little Shuffle). I'm not ragging on you, and I understand holding to principles. I haven't darkened the door of a JC Penney since 1984 because of a dispute over a credit card. But sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture.

For USB ports on a computer, Apple support says:
Plug your charging cable into a USB 2.0 or 3.0 port on a computer that's on and not in sleep mode. Don’t use the USB ports on your keyboard.

And no, no all device comes with a wall charger. You can bring up tons of un-boxing videos and see for yourself. Such as this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGu7viKujk4

I didn't see a wall charger. Let me know if you do.

And if you want to know why Apple devices will not charge if the computer is not on, read this:
Apple and other USB charger secrets |

and this:
https://learn.adafruit.com/minty-boost/icharging

The author said: "...There is nothing to stop them just drawing the 500mA if the right sort of charger is not detected. Refusing to charge at all unless the licensed parts are present is pure market control, nothing else..."

If you like these kinds of thing, these are fascinating reads. You can hack the cable, or a cheap charger so the I-Crap device will charge according to USB specs. But this is not really the point, is it?

As far as charging goes, Apple has gone out of its way and implemented a design that removes an industry standard for the sole purpose of market control. In doing so, they are selling chargers at $30, $50 a pop and making tons of plastic crap that is not necessary to begin with.

Like I said, everyone has a different mileage. The big picture, as far as I am concerned, is Apple in making a few quick bucks, created tons of un-needed waste and does more than its share to **** up my Earth.

I'd sure be interested in your line of work (generically, of course).

You have some interesting conspiratorial views, and I can't help but wonder how your industry/trade/union/employer would stand up to the same scrutiny/standards with which you judge Apple et al.

Eagerly waiting ....

Further reading on wiki regarding a common cell phone charger.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_external_power_supply.

Regarding Apple, it says:
The European Commission however, confirmed that all MoU signatories, "have met their obligations under the MoU,"[5] stating specifically, "Concerning Apple's previous and present proprietary connectors and their compatibility with the agreement, the MoU allows for the use of an adaptor without prescribing the conditions for its provision"[14] and "The Commission does not have evidence that Apple has breached the [MoU] agreement. The iPhone 5 can be used with an adaptor allowing it to be connected to the common charger."

In other words, Apple insists on using its own I-crap and made an adaptor, which accidentally sells for $19. https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MD820AM/A/lightning-to-micro-usb-adapter

There is no conspiracy. It is a simple point. You make money by providing a service. You charge for features that are useful. You don't make money by removing service, or disabling features that are standard. What more is there to say about that?

Game, set, and match. I'll leave you to your complaint thread. :hail::peace::yield::moon:

Can you run two sets of tires and rims? I'm going to get a second set and mount winter tires and swap them in the Spring and Fall. Will that require a TPMS re-set?

Thanks much, Steve.

That's what I do, it does require a reset. Never had a tire shop without a TPMS reset ability though and most of them charge next to nothing especially if you bought the tires from them. Discount charges me 10 bucks and it takes the guy like 5 minutes. You can also get the software pretty easily.

So I recently replaced tires at Costco. They replaced one of the TPMS sensors and the tire pressure warning wouldn't go off. They directed me to the dealership, who then charged over $50 to "relearn" the new TPMS. Now the light is off, and Costco covered the cost.

The new TPMS wouldn't talk to the computer so the light stayed on. According to Costco, they don't have either the equipment, or some code, to establish the relationship between the vehicle computer and the new TPMS. Only the dealership has that information.

Is this true? If it is, then basically I am stuck with paying a ransom for every replacement TPMS.

4R is not exactly a cheap car. If I can afford a 4R, I can afford the "ransom." But that is not the issue. If Toyota decides to rip everyone off, then I will not deal with them anymore.

What is your experience?

Thanks.

$50 is minor cost for a repair that rarely happens in any case. You'll be spending much more of all other car manufacturers. Plus wasn't that under warranty? The only other vehicle I've owned that was close to Toyota reliability was a 99' Tahoe LT 4x4. Just my .02

Hush now...shhhh....everything be alright. Toyota has you...and will never let you go.

Sounds to me like the two shops had either cheap tools or outdated software. When I did used cars we had an OTC tool that was able to program new sensor IDs, a bit clunkier than the Techstream, but doable.

There's plenty of good TPMS readers/programmers out there and they work for most every model I've seen. Maybe a bit finicky with the newest stuff, but usually that's just fixed by a software update as the sensors and system are relatively the same for most of our vehicles (only last few years did they switch from 7 digit IDs to an 8 Digit ID).

That being said, if $50 and a trip to the dealer is that much of a hassle, just get a Chinese ripped TIS Techstream and set it up on a secured partition of your laptop's hard drive.

IF that's too Chinesium for you, get a legit Mongoose Cable that Toyota supports, pay $20 for 24 or 48 hours (I forget how long it is) license to use Techstream software and do it yourself.

There's plenty of options out there, you just need to be smart enough to look for them.

If you're going to condemn Toyota for "making you go to the dealer to fix their car" then you should just not buy any car ever. OBDII is the federally mandated side of the vehicle, after that everything else is up to how the manufacturer decides they want to do things and guess what? No manufacturer is open about their side of the system, you will always need specialized tools and software to access/repair/calibrate those systems and even then some of the aftermarket stuff can't/won't work nearly as well as a factory tool.

TPMS is not covered under OBDII by the way and your issue sounds like a combination of incompetent 3rd party repair shops, 3rd party software/hardware, and I suspect your IDs probably didn't get reset before Costco probably broke a sensor and then couldn't program it correctly (pretty common actually). I bet that if you cracked open all 4 tires one of them will be an aftermarket sensor.

It's COSTCO

I may be completely wrong here, but it's Costco....
what can you expect from them....
sorry, but I would never expect them to know how to treat my 4runner...
and I would never let them touch it...

now, for TP, Bounty and cases of Perrier....I'm there...

I'm not bad mouthing them...I have a membership...

its just that I go there for certain things...and installing tires for my 4runner would not be one of them

"unreasonable expectations".

The only cure for this is to try another manufacture.....and compare. I've been guilty of it, and I think we all have been guilty of it as some point in our lives. I'm just smart enough to not post about my experiences on forums....

Lastly, unless the op lives in a perfect world, mistakes happen all the time...its how companies fixes those mistakes. Costco did good in my book. I think in today's world, everybody thinks they are entitled to something or another, and get all mad over nothing.

Maybe YOU don't, but Apple sure do!

Here are the six "most valuable companies in the world" ranked by market cap at the market close on Monday, according to Yahoo Finance:
1.Apple ($appl): $570.7 billion
2.Alphabet ($goog): $560B
3.Microsoft ($msft): $434B
4.Amazon ($amzn): $365B
5.Facebook ($fb): $354B
6.Exxon Mobile ($xom): $351B

ps: You never did tell me what your line of work is, hmmm?

There's plenty of companies that refurbish, recycle, and reuse old cell phones and associated hardware. In fact go to nearly any grocery store nowadays and you'll see an automated machine that spits out cash for your used old cell phone.
I'm not sure how this thread became more about cell phones and their proprietary technology vs. your truck but neither arguement makes much sense.
Also cell phones even have enough rare earth metals within them that a profit is viable when an acid leaching process is utilized.

I don't understand your arguments...
-If you worried about environmental impacts then your driving the wrong vehicle as well as burning resources by posting your jibberish online. You should be building a Cob house in the mountains living off the grid and washing your clothes in a baking soda/urine mixture.
-If your worried about a company trying to take your money then welcome to 2017. The goal of every company and basically every human living is to better yourself including your financial outlook with as little energy expenditure as possible.
Did you now on your electric bill that you use to post your rediculous complaints online is full of extra taxes and fees called " rider fees " that retail power companies throw on there just because they can? They are not providing anything other than power purchased from wholesale markets and delivered to you with their name associated. You are paying more for absolutely nothing that they do other than being the middle man. Many things in your life that you pay for every day work the same way. I'd bet your spending 100s of dollars a month on things you don't necessarily need to given a non profit society.
- if you worried about wether Costco screwed you then quit going to Costco. There's a reason they charge 1/3 what a dealer does.
-if your worried about Apple taking over the world then perhaps a shack in the Yukon is the best place for you. All you gotta do is boycott their products instead of preaching about conspiracy theory jibberish nobody really cares about anyways. Perhaps your "sweaty" from all the worrying over nothing. Or maybe it's from sitting on that rocking chair on the porch hollering at children and sipping pabst blue ribbon. Maybe go inside and enjoy the a/c unless there's a conspiracy about dehumidified air as well?

Lastly I'm not sure what your infatuation with running me over is as you have already mentioned it twice but I'd advise you to leave your vague threats at the forum door and quit being a grumpy old Fuk. Get off the god damn internet and enjoy what little time you have left and quit threatening people trying to inform you about subjects you obviously know very little about. This will be the last time I address you as I believe your too old, too dim or too stubborn to argue with anyways. Best of luck OP- I'm out.
