The Hilux is a heavy 1/4 ton like a Tacoma.....why did you say it was a 1-ton?

Well, maybe I am making a mistake with terminology or something, but the payload capacity for a 4x4 single cab 3.0lt turbo diesel hilux is
1060kg / 2336lb (gmv - kerb weight) which is close enough to 1 ton.

1ton = 1000kg. SO 1060kg is slightly more then 1ton.

I think Hilux has reinforced frame, might be wrong.
