Hey folks,

I bought the Black TRD Pro wheels and put them on with about 5K miles, had the Terra Grapplers put on and since then I have had to go back to americas tire for a rebalance once after I had them put on, again at 10k, again at 15k and now again a week after having them rebalanced at 15k

Needless to say im getting tired of it. When I came in here at 15k I asked the tech if it was normal for my tires to be significantly out of balance every 5k to the point I feel it in the seat and the steering wheel shakes and he said yes due to them being all terrain.

This is my first SUV, first time I have had any all terrain tires


Is this normal? Are you folks having to do the same? Couldniy be another issue? Bent rims etc? I have not been off road or had any significant incidents, still have a ton of tread left

I'm no expert, but WTH. No, that is not common nor acceptable. And for the tech to tell you otherwise is poor business. Go elsewhere.
 
Are they the G2's? I have the G2's and do not have this problem.

Did they check the alignment? If that's not it, it's probably the tires. I would have them replaced under warranty.
 
I have the G2's and did have to have them rebalanced after about 3K miles.

Fine now.

I have been running Nitto Terra Grapplers on three trucks since 2007 without issue.
 
Should not have this problem. I put 40k miles on mine on a single balance and they were true when I sold them. Sounds like you've been paying a moron.
 
They are the original Terra Grapplers.

Just left and asked how off they were

3 degrees on all 4

Said that today the tech began balancing them without the "Toyota plate" on and he had to stop them and have him put it on.

Do you guys think if they initially balanced them without this Toyota plate, they could have worn in a way that would cause this continued issue?

Why are they talking about degrees if they are balancing the tires? Are you sure they weren't doing an alignment?

For a tire balance they would be adding or removing weights from the wheels.

I would find a new shop if you are still having the problem. It doesn't necessarily have to be the dealer.

Over 10K on my current Terra Grapplers. Balance still seems good.

I did notice a vibration at really high, highway speeds after my last tire rotation at the Dealer. I went around and took each wheel off myself, re-seated and re-torqued. I aired down to 32psi as opposed to 35psi that tech sheet from Dealer service claimed they set them to.

Vibration is still there but as mentioned only at really high speeds which a) is illegal b) isn't what the tires were designed to do. Nor was the vehicle designed for the high speeds either.

At all of the reasonable speeds for the vehicle the ride is surprising smooth for AT's.

Others have already mentioned it but I think you need to go to another shop. Or file a warranty claim for the tires, there might be a bad one or out-of-round one in the set.
 
Have a TRD pro and after 900 miles and a forced balance both front tires were out of round and have been replaced. I still get occasional vibration in the wheel on occasion, but not to the extent with the first set of front tires.

I'd look into the out of round possibility.
 
I have a Trail with the g2 tires on trdpro rims. I've put about 8,000 miles on them. Never had to get them rebalanced. My only issue was one of the front wheels was not completely flat during the manufacturing process and would cause the car to drift to the left. Discount tire replaced both fronts since it's impossible to tell which tire is suspect. Rebalanced and did the whole process for free.

Your issue sounds like perhaps the adhesive they are using is not applying correctly or they are simply not balancing the tire properly. Have you thought about taking it someplace else?
 
Eff man, just drove on the freeway and while the steering wheel is a little better the damn car is shaking like hell between 60-70

Im going to bring up the out of round possibility to them and see wtf
 
What does the wear on the tires look like? Any chance you might have some feathering/minor cupping that's presenting itself at higher speed (unlikely, but possibly.)

I mean I am finding it hard to believe these guys can't balance a set of tires (at least after this many tries;) I found my LT285/70R17 Terra Grapplers to be reasonable to balance on my stock 4th Gen Sport Rims (they took a bit of weight on one or two rims, but they balanced very well.) It took almost 10~15k for them to develop a slight vibration above 85mph (which, honestly I didn't get up to that much) and so I rebalanced them last time I rotated them.

Either these guys are completely incompetent or something else is going on here...
 
I know it doesn't really matter since I have low miles but I got about 3,000 miles on my nitto terra grapplers on my TRD PRO. No issues what so ever. Hope it works out for you.
 
8k going on 9 on my G2s. The shop that mounted mine said they now come with a 50k mile warranty from Nitto. I've yet to have issues out of mine though.
