If your head unit is rebooting when bluetooth is connected

Delete all the phone settings and set it up again, but DO NOT allow it to sync contacts.

I have a 2016 Trail Edition with Entune Premium. I was getting repeated reboots every 60 seconds. Dealer said I needed a new head unit ($870 plus tax). I was waiting for the next Apple update to see if it changed anything, and using the phone in the car with no bluetooth.

I decided to set it up again with bluetooth connected, no useless Entune app, and no contacts or messages sync. All day today, it worked. Took a long drive for a couple of hours with no reboot. Listened to music, podcasts, and made a few phone calls.

Give it a try. Fingers crossed it keeps working for a while.

Let’s hope that’s it.

My daughter bought a 2019 Subaru Outback on Saturday. Will be interesting to see how that HU works on her iPhone.

I just think our Panasonic HU’s are garbage. Shame for an otherwise superb truck! We shouldn’t have to put in an after market radio to just make it work like advertised. We need a T4R attorney to put some pressure on Yota.

I was having the same reboot issue. Found an update on Toyota that I downloaded to a thumb drive. Plugged it into my runner and it has worked perfect ever since.

Not for me. I've downloaded that update and also had the dealer install the latest update, neither worked. Entune hasn't been updated since 2017, could use a new update.

so you dont have any contacts in on your heads up display?

Its just good for answering the phone and bluetooth music?

Had the same problem all the time in my 2016 Highlander, that Entune HU is a POS. Hopefully the new 2020 CarPlay one is better.

Alternative (FREE) solution

This rebooting issue was addressed on another thread. It turned out to be the iPhone causing the problems, especially with the iTunes application feeding across bluetooth. Let's see if I remember all the steps:

  1. backup your iphone
  2. disconnect bluetooth on phone (turn it off)
  3. remove iphone from truck (delete it)
  4. uninstall iTunes app
  5. Reset Network settings
  6. Log out of iTunes
  7. reboot the iPhone
  8. log back into iTunes
  9. reinstall iTunes app
  10. test random play on iphone
  11. re-enable bluetooth
  12. reconnect to the truck

This is the link to the steps I posted, that absolutely worked for me, including keeping my contacts, etc... restored all normal OEM functionality.

Constant rebooting when iPhone connected

Reading through those steps that you did on your phone that solved your issue - I don’t use the iTunes Store app at all so could I just delete that app? Were you streaming music thru iTunes, hence the issue was partially related to that? I merely connect my iPhone 8+ via Bluetooth and my system reboots every 90 seconds.

This:

You must be running the latest iOS. First, forget (delete) the 4Runner from the iPhone Bluetooth settings. You must also remove (delete) the iPhone from the 4Runner radio so there are NO phones paired. You must TURN OFF the Bluetooth on the iPhone until the last step. Here’s what he did to the phone:

Before starting any of this, back up your phone to your iCloud account and/or your PC / MAC via iTunes...

1. Uninstall Apple Music app.
2. Reset network settings.
3. Sign out of your iTunes account on your iPhone.
4. Restart the iPhone.
5. Sign in to iTunes account on iPhone again.
6. Reinstall the Apple Music app.
7. Open the Apple Music app, select songs, then select shuffle and let it begin playing the music on the iPhone first to be sure it’s working properly.
8. Pair the phone with the truck again (turn Bluetooth on, go to audio screen and select add).

The previous poster was trying to help however used some different nomenclature.

It's the "Music" app.

Just follow these steps... see if it works. It did for me.

I've done all those steps and it still didn't work. I'm hoping one day Toyota releases a new update for the radio software that doesn't stink, but I'm not holding my breath.

As OP originally stated, deleting all connections with all phones you had synced your rig, then re-syncing but selecting to not sync contacts is what fixed the issue for me. I spoke with the dealer, and they confirmed as well.
