If your third gen was totaled, what would you replace it with?

I'd buy a 05 - Present Tacoma Quad Cab, long box 4X4. Most likely Black, then mod it with a lift, new wheels and tires, and murder it out!
Am I the only one who likes the new 5th gen? I would get the same thing, 4cylinder 2wd. Its the most fuel-efficient macho vehicle you can own! And because its built like a truck and RWD its easy to work on. Less skid plates and stuff in the way. You only need 4WD in sand and mud, and it never rains here in socal.
Interesting comment about not being a good road trip vehicle. I just did a 2,200 mile road trip in mine last week including 100 miles off-road in Arizona. I spent $400 on gas between my GF and I. That's a lot cheaper than a plane ticket anywhere. I had zero problems and it just hit 225,000 miles.
But realistically I don't like a huge car payment so I always buy used 3-5 years old. The 4th gen are ugly IMHO and I've always wanted a Dodge Magnum with the Hemi, so that is what I will get probably next year. This Toyota is just so reliable I don't have an excuse to replace it!

I'd definitely choose another 3rd gen 4Runner. IMO one of the best looking SUV's ever made while also being much more reliable than the competition. Finding another low mileage truck would be difficult, but with some patience an opportunity would surely present itself. My dream 3rd gen (other than my current truck) would be a 99 Highlander in IJM. It has the small upgrades (cupholders, more rear bin storage space, etc.) while also still being a 3rd gen. Love the color and I would love having a vehicle that is rare and sought after out of the box.

I'd probably hunt around for another 3rd gen. A white/tan limited would be nice. However, I might also consider an outback, always thought they were kind of a cool concept, plus as my dogs are getting older (and I keep raising the T4R), its getting more difficult to get in and out, the lower ground clearance would be beneficial.

Probably a 4-door Taco. I miss having a pickup bed. Now I need to haul a trailer if I want to get something longer than 5-6 feet.
And I disagree that the 4runner isn't a good trip vehicle. We leave our comfy VW Passat wagon at home for long trips. It gets about 8-9 mpg better, but the runner is just more convenient in a lot of ways.

Looks like we need to convince Toyota to bring the 3rd gen. back into production, maybe with some different engine options?

I guess maybe it depends on where you go but the fuel range on the 4runner sux big time. 300 - 325 highway miles is pathetic. My Montero got worse MPG than the 4runner but could go 450+ on a tank because the tank was 24.5 gallons. My '99 Outback could go over 400 and so could my 2wd Ford Ranger. Even my '04 Taco was good for at least 350 and I could push it to nearly 400 if I was on flat ground.
That's probably my biggest gripe, along with the mushy, gas-hogging slushbox tranny.
Different tranny, too. The '05 - up 4th gens have a 5 speed slushbox that gets significantly better MPG. Combined with the bigger fuel tank, that gives a more appropriate highway range of 400+ miles.
The downside, of course, is that you can only get it with a slushbox, which is why I wouldn't get a 4th gen.
I was a reluctant convert to the slushbox when I got my 4runner, all my previous 4x4's had manual trannys. I got the slushbox so my wife could drive it. Well, in 2 years of owning it, she's driven my 4runner exactly once. So my next 4x4 will have a manual tranny, without a doubt.

I would get another toyota, but this time it would be a extended cab 4x4 tacoma. I really could often use a pickup .
I had a 94 red cab 4x4 that I lost due too some major frame rot, after that I got a 4runner but I didn't realize how nice it was to have a pickup until I didn't have it .

Well mine has been totaled (twice) and I decided to rebuild it better than it was before.
But if it was not rebuildable, I would look for an early gen 4runner or pickup. Lately I've got a thing for the early 80s Toyotas. I get a kick out of the stories how people find them in the someones backyard.
