Hello T4R!
I'd been searching the Northwest for a decent 1999 or 2000 4runner in my price range for many month, and finally nabbed one. I'll be driving it almost daily, and it'll be my Northwest exploration/adventure rig. Fresh from Vancouver BC via Craigslist
1999 Limited, 139,000 miles, Auto, Locker, New timing belt & WP, new brakes, new exhaust, oil change, tranny flush, fan clutch, and 80% 265/70R16 BG All-Terrains. Maintenance has been done consistently. Speedo in KPH (and MPH), ODO in KM, and climate control in °C! How fun!
Got it from the second owner, and it's been a BC truck its whole life. It was a bit risky buying a truck without seeing it first, but these 3rd gens go quickly, and the owner was very up front about everything, so I jumped on it. He had a line of people waiting if I didnt take it. He was very friendly.
Once my flight to Vancouver was finished, we got a trip permit and insurance at a Canadian DMV-type office inside a grocery store. They dont have a central DMV, just little independently owned establishments that can take care of all your insurance and registering needs very quickly. It took like 15 minutes, and there was no line! They were very friendly.
Then I started my 7 hour journey home to Portland. What a nice way to get to know a truck! I'd only test driven a couple 3rd gens, and boy are they pleasant! Its comfy, rides well, handles well, and has ample power. It's also very quiet inside, which was a pleasant surprise. Everything on the truck works, and the interior is in great shape.
I made it to the border. Here is where I didnt do quite enough homework. I should have brought a compliance letter from Toyota, but didnt. After the officers inspected the truck, they opted to let me continue home as long as I brought it to compliance at my Portland Importation office. They could have sent me right back to Canada until the compliance letter arrived. They were very friendly.
About 4 hours into the drive the CEL popped on, so I detoured to Autozone and had them run it. Knock sensor! The truck didnt drive any differently, so I continued on.
Truck ran great, and now it sits, Illegal Alien style, until the compliance letter arrives.
It's got a bit more light surface rust from Canadian Salting than I'd like, but it's not too bad. I'll post some pics this weekend. I'll do the knock sensor testing, and probably replace them and the harness once it's registered. I'll document the procedure.
I'm excited to be a T4R owner!
Planned Upgrades:
- Floormats/Cargo mat
- 2" Tundra lift eventually (I want to keep it mild, good street manners, better mpg, no diff drop.)
- 17" wheels, either tundra or FJ cruiser
- 265/70R17 AT's
- Scanguage
- Armor. I like the Addicted front Hybrid, and probably CBI rear.
Thanks for reading. This will be a long build!
