--------------------------

Hello T4R!

I'd been searching the Northwest for a decent 1999 or 2000 4runner in my price range for many month, and finally nabbed one. I'll be driving it almost daily, and it'll be my Northwest exploration/adventure rig. Fresh from Vancouver BC via Craigslist

1999 Limited, 139,000 miles, Auto, Locker, New timing belt & WP, new brakes, new exhaust, oil change, tranny flush, fan clutch, and 80% 265/70R16 BG All-Terrains. Maintenance has been done consistently. Speedo in KPH (and MPH), ODO in KM, and climate control in °C! How fun!

Got it from the second owner, and it's been a BC truck its whole life. It was a bit risky buying a truck without seeing it first, but these 3rd gens go quickly, and the owner was very up front about everything, so I jumped on it. He had a line of people waiting if I didnt take it. He was very friendly.

Once my flight to Vancouver was finished, we got a trip permit and insurance at a Canadian DMV-type office inside a grocery store. They dont have a central DMV, just little independently owned establishments that can take care of all your insurance and registering needs very quickly. It took like 15 minutes, and there was no line! They were very friendly.

Then I started my 7 hour journey home to Portland. What a nice way to get to know a truck! I'd only test driven a couple 3rd gens, and boy are they pleasant! Its comfy, rides well, handles well, and has ample power. It's also very quiet inside, which was a pleasant surprise. Everything on the truck works, and the interior is in great shape.

I made it to the border. Here is where I didnt do quite enough homework. I should have brought a compliance letter from Toyota, but didnt. After the officers inspected the truck, they opted to let me continue home as long as I brought it to compliance at my Portland Importation office. They could have sent me right back to Canada until the compliance letter arrived. They were very friendly.

About 4 hours into the drive the CEL popped on, so I detoured to Autozone and had them run it. Knock sensor! The truck didnt drive any differently, so I continued on.

Truck ran great, and now it sits, Illegal Alien style, until the compliance letter arrives.

It's got a bit more light surface rust from Canadian Salting than I'd like, but it's not too bad. I'll post some pics this weekend. I'll do the knock sensor testing, and probably replace them and the harness once it's registered. I'll document the procedure.

I'm excited to be a T4R owner!

Planned Upgrades:

- Floormats/Cargo mat
- 2" Tundra lift eventually (I want to keep it mild, good street manners, better mpg, no diff drop.)
- 17" wheels, either tundra or FJ cruiser
- 265/70R17 AT's
- Scanguage
- Armor. I like the Addicted front Hybrid, and probably CBI rear.

Thanks for reading. This will be a long build!

Looks like a great find! I know what you're talking about when it comes to jumping on the sale before someone else buys it. I had more than one slip through my fingers because I didn't act fast enough.

If you're looking for a speedometer/odometer conversion I'm sure you'll be able to find someone to do it in Portland. If you can't find anyone down there I know Spokane/Airway Heights has a few shops that specialize in it. They bring a TON of used trucks from Canada down to the US to be auctioned off so they keep plenty busy with the conversions. The last I heard I think it was right around $150 for the whole thing. But I'm sure you can find someone to do it closer than Spokane.

Let me know if you plan on selling your stock wheels. I want to do the Tundra Break Upgrade and it wont fit behind my 16" split spokes without some grinding. It should fit behind the ones you have just fine without any modifications to the rims or adding spacers from what I understand.

Enjoy your 4Runner!

First thing, ditch those running boards! You can replace the cluster with one from the US to fix the kilometer issue.

Good find too.

Thanks for the great information- if the KM stuff makes me crazy, I'll convert it, but I think I can deal with it. Heck, I may even grow to love it. ;)

I will be selling the stock wheels/tires at some point, but it wont be for a while unless a screaming deal comes down the pipes for a setup I like. Also, my wheels have clearcoat/paint peeling and some scuffs which cant be seen in the pics. I'll take closeups later!

Yup, the running boards are coming off ASAP and going in the for sale section/CL. I'll be doing some sliders eventually with kickout.

Thanks!!

That is a nice one, did you see the black Badlands 4runner on Craigslist before buying this one? Anyway, you can't go wrong with any 3rd gen 4runner and atleast you got the right color (green).

Bah, sorry thought you were from Vancouver.... sneaky american's stealing our 4runners lol.

Looks like a good find and in BC except for up in the mountains, there's not a whole lot of snow and salt use there is a rarity at best.

In Ontario ours can turn into ORE-Runners quickly with the amount of salt they dump here.
I think Lake Ontario and Erie are salt water bodies of water now.

Paperwork for import/export is always so much fun. You have to have all your ducks in a row as the saying goes and it gets done quickly.

Congrats and enjoy!

I removed the running boards! So much better.

I also replaced a burnt out license plate light bulb, and ordered the B&M Tranny cooler from Advanced Auto for 20% off and free shipping.

It looks so much better without the running boards! How are enjoying the speedo in KM? My first 4Runner was from Canada and one of the first things I did was swap the gauge cluster.

I dont mind the KM, I'm going to leave it. Conversation piece!

I just ordered 4X Innovations sliders- figured I should replace the running boards with something!

I, too, ended up with a Canuck and was confused by stuff for a moment. Nice rig, though. I have the dash cluster from my '96 laying around if ya want it. Not sure if it will work in a 99 but I'd be happy to send it to ya. It's already gots the LED's in it -

I appreciate the offer, but I'm going to stick with my KM's for now.

I ordered some TRD decals today so I can be cool. ;)

Yup - had the upgrade done, and those rims fit fine.

That thing is friggin beuful'. Best color ever, hands down.

Thanks!

Just picked up a set of (4) 2015 4runner 17" Takeoffs on CL for $190.

:drum:

I'm thinking of mounting 265/70R17 Hankook Dynapro ATM's on them. I have those tires on my Dodge and have loved themm and they are $131 each shipped free on Amazon. It's tempting to go with 255/75R17 BFG Mud Terrain KM's (the Jeep JK takeoffs) but I dont think I need the off road performance as much as I'll need the good street performance, rain grip and highway manners (+MPG) of the all terrain.

If you like the Hankooks then I would get 255/75/17 in them. Thats the size I have on my 4runner and love it. It's a 32x10x17 and looks really good

Picked up the wheels from an employee of a local Toyota Dealer off a 2015 4runner. Light use, good shape.

4X Innovations Sliders showed up. I'll be reinforcing them a bit with stronger trussing and maybe an extra mount tube.

Gave it a bath. Lots of little rock chips that are white where the paints been knocked away.

We've got the same look going on haha my paint is ruined because of all the rock chips and what not, but at least it helps me not worry if i scratch it on the trail! Good looking rig and sweet wheels! I can't wait to see them mounted
